Alcatraz (2012)
6/10
Disappointing to say the least.
3 February 2012
Before the pilot episode aired, there was a lot of hype generated by the degree of marketing the producers of the show invested in, towards its success. Naturally I was excited too, the show possessed that spark of intrigue and mystery that I so desperately craved. However, upon watching the first few episodes, I was disappointed upon discovery, that the show was merely your stereotypical and unoriginal crime thriller. Despite the paranormal twist, the show incorporates similar elements from other crime dramas like 'NCIS' and 'Criminal Minds', where the protagonists piece together puzzle pieces to find themselves a killer and save the day. I can only hope that the storyline loses that boring and unoriginal linearity as it progresses, but the ugly truth is, I've already given up.

Sherlock: The Hounds of Baskerville (2012)
Season 2, Episode 2
9/10
An interesting new addition, for all fans of Sherlock Holmes, old and new.

Not nearly as ingenious as "A scandal in Belgravia", but nevertheless a refreshing adaptation of Conan Doyle's "The hound of the Baskervilles". The episode kicked off with its usual degree of intrigue and tension, maintained over the majority of the episode. Cumberbatch's portrayal of the enigmatic Sherlock Holmes was excellent as always, sharp but quirky. Moffat's storyline was a little overboard but he still managed to maintain its intoxicating appeal and keep it beyond the realms of impossibility.

However, the director appeared to have gotten a bit too carried away with his attempts at building suspense while the story conclusion left me feeling a bit cheated. No spoilers, to me, the episode was a solid 8-9 out of 10.
