Super 8 (2011)
Best action movie with kids I've seen in a long time
Films with kids tend to fail as they try to cater for the kids and parents market.
Some succeed because they are based on serious issues.
The majority that fail do so because they apply a safe level of action so as not to frighten off the younger viewer.
This film, in the main, does a brilliant job of involving kids as the main characters but having plot that's not too saccharine and includes a few tender moments as well.
Yes there are a couple of clichéd moments but by and large this had me rivetted right through to the end.
There were a few gentle twists throughout and added to that some very realistic special effects.
Don't be put off by the average age of the main characters.
Really pleasantly surprised.
Broken (2019)
Ignore the paid for by the industry reviews.
Unlike most of the reviews I have read, most people either watched nothing more than the first episode, or watched nothing more than the first ten minutes of the first episode.
I started with the plastics episode.
It has its flaws but it's also totally obvious that there is a serious problem with single use plastic and that the petrochemical industry will do whatever it can to smother the people trying to ban single use plastics, starting with the the state of Texas. And even as a UK resident I know how much oil contributes to Texas.
I also know that Ted Cruz is firmly ensconced in Texas.
Ignore the sub 5 star reviews.
9/11: One Day in America (2021)
Must watch viewing
I cried in each episode.
I was uplifted in each episode.
Pantani: The Accidental Death of a Cyclist (2014)
Read the book, whether you see the film or not.
Pantani: Accidental Death of a Cyclist.
Read the book, whether you see the film or not.
The book, obviously, goes into so much more detail than a film ever can.
It is definitely worth watching the film and reading the book as the film depicts the racing scenes much better than a book ever can, but...
the book goes into so much more detail on the sad life that enveloped Marco Pantani after the success of his Tour De France and Giro D'Italia successes in 1998.
I had tears in my eyes at the end of the book as it conveyed his downfall so much better than the film could possibly manage.
This is one of those times when you have to delve deeper and read the full story. And even someone who is as anti-doping as me felt so strongly on the impact it had on a man who died too young.
And yes, I don't believe it was suicide.
Tom Allen Goes to Town (2020)
Just listen to Mark Steel's In Town instead
Anyone familiar with BBC Sounds Mark Steel's In Town will be well aware of how well this sort of programme could work.
Where Mark Steel really gets into the heart of each town he visits and makes the local audience and the listening audience laugh out loud this is a poor and pale comparison.
I am a fan of Tom Allen but his is an hour long programme that doesn't dig deep enough into the mind and ways of the locals.
It trivialises many aspects and the daft quiz game on stage is pointless and slightly embarrassing.
I didn't learn much about Wakefield and wasn't entertained much either so not sure exactly what the point of the show was.
