Peaky Blinders: Black Shirt (2022)
Great episode for a great series, but one complaint
I loved the episode. Peaky Blinders is just first-rate from start to finish. I do have one complaint though.
Note to James Frecheville.(Jack Nelson): You attempted to do a Boston Accent, but it ended up sounding like an Australian trying to fake a Boston accent. It was so jarring, it took me right out of the episode. If you can't pull off an authentic Boston accent, please don't try. Just use a generic 'American' accent and you'll be fine.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Paradise Lost (1996)
Star Trek meets Seven Days in May
I couldn't help but make a comparison between this two parter and the excellent cold war film 'Seven Days in May'. In that film, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff -- dissatisfied with a treaty the President negotiated with the Soviet union -- attempts a coup to overthrow the president and install himself.
An excellent episode of Deep Space Nine and essential viewing -- especially now.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
I don't understand the ill will shown towards this series
There are definitely a vocal cadre of people who have decided they hate STD, in fact any star trek since the end of the 90's. It's important to keep in mind that there was an equally vocal group of fans that hated TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, in fact, any version of Star Trek that did not include the original Kirk, Spock, and McCoy.
Those of us who are fans of those shows are very grateful that the naysayers back then didn't have access to the internet services the Discovery haters have access to now. If they had, Star Trek would have died with The Undiscovered Country.
On the whole, I like Star Trek Discovery. Are there things about it I dislike? Sure. I don't understand the Klingon retcon in season 1, their treatment of Section 31 in season 2 made no sense, and the plot around The Burn in season 3 has been too slow to develop. But hey, I didn't like Deanna Troi or Wesley Crusher either, but I watched TNG. I wasn't a huge fan of Keiko O'Brien, but I watched DS9.
On the whole, I am happy the franchise has enough life in it to produce new and interesting stories, and I am enjoying that. To the haters who see hating on STD as a means to boost their own egos, maybe you should focus on something more positive, rather than trying to boost yourselves up, while tearing others down.
Midway (2019)
If this movie spurs people into reading the history, it's done it's job
Historical films are always difficult to pull off, because history doesn't always fit into a nice Hollywood mold. This is a time period I've always been fascinated by, and Midway is a battle I've read extensively about over the years. This is a moment when the world as we know it would look very different if this battle had another outcome. So for me, it was important that the story be told accurately, as it is a pivotal point in the Second World War.
Did they do that? Yes. The characters they show -- Best, McCluskey, Nimitz, Halsey, Doolittle, Yamamoto, Nagumo, Yamaguchi, Layton, Rocheford, et al, are all real. Unlike other Hollywood historical films (like Pearl Harbor), they didn't mung it up with fake characters and story in order to give some star screen time.
Is the story accurate? Fundamentally yes. While there was some very minor conflation of supporting events, mostly for time, everything that unfolded is true, and I don't think there is anything shown that flat out did not happen (again like in Pearl Harbor).
I thought the CGI work overall was excellent. It added to the story in the right way, and it was amazing to see them bring the Enterprise, Hornet, and Yorktown back to life. It was incredible to see those classic Dauntless's, Devastators, Mitchells, Zeros, Kates, and Marauders in the air again. There are some minor nits to pick, but they don't really detract from the story.
I highly recommend seeing this movie. See it for the history, the story, and for the appreciation of the Greatest Generation. One thing that is undeniable, is that these guys had balls the size of coconuts.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: In the Pale Moonlight (1998)
Best episode of the entire Star Trek Franchise
The line that always gets me:
Garak: ... 'And if your conscience is bothering you, you should soothe it with the knowledge that you may have just saved the entire Alpha Quadrant. And all it cost was the life of one Romulan senator, one criminal, and the self-respect of one Starfleet officer. I don't know about you, but I'd call that a bargain.'
Never in the Star Trek franchise was the drama so tense, the ramifications so massive, and the stakes so high. Deep Space 9 has been called 'Star Trek for grownups'. This episode is its best example.
Chernobyl (2019)
If I could use every superlative in every language, I still would not be able to do this justice
Chernobyl was quite simply the greatest piece of television I have ever seen. It captured everything -- from the science behind the disaster and the response, to the gross incompetence and willful neglect that led to it, to the disgraceful reaction from Soviet Communist Party apparatchiks, to the gut-wrenching bravery of ordinary people who knowingly sacrificed themselves to prevent even greater calamity. The scene at the end of episode 2 when the three men are wading through radioactive water in the dark with Geiger counters wailing in the background has to be one of the most tense scenes ever filmed.
Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgard, and Emily Watson were all superb. The entire supporting cast was amazing (who knew Paul Ritter could play such an arrogant villian?) Everything, the writing, the acting, the production values, the music, the attention to detail, was all perfect.
If this series doesn't take home Emmys by the bucket, something is seriously wrong with the universe.
Game of Thrones: The Bells (2019)
The breadcrumbs for Dany's transformation have been in plain sight for years
I know there are many people who hate season 8. I am not one of them. Outside of being rushed, which let's face it, there's not much D&D can do about that, the turn of Dany to the dark side has been foreshadowed for some time. Talk about nuance all you want, but in the end, all of us are defined by a few moments in our lives -- for good or ill.
This will set up a very interesting finale which I am looking forward to. Look for characters we thought were done (like Bran and Sam) to play a role. People may be more satisfied with the ending than they think. Be patient.
My biggest concern with season 8 was that there was no way to tie up every plot point in such a huge universe, and that's a shame. I would like to know more about what Bran sees. I would like to know what the voice in the flames told Varys. And most of all, I would like to know the punchline to the Tyrion beehive, honeycomb, and jackass in the brothel joke.
Game of Thrones: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (2019)
Reminds me of Shakespeare's Henry V
In many ways, last night's episode reminded me of Shakespeare's Henry V. The night before the battle when the English were about to face an army five times their size at Agincourt, there is extensive dialog among the characters the night before this great battle.
The episode marked a calm before the storm when they remind everyone why we have spent so many years in love with these characters before everything hits the fan. We all know that many of these characters will be gone by the end of next week, and this episode will just heighten our grief when it happens.
I just know they're going to rip our guts out next week.
Independence Day (1996)
Surprisingly well-done, fun to watch movie that doesn't take itself too seriously
I'll admit that when this movie first came out, I wasn't terribly interested. In fact, I never saw it when it was first released. It wasn't until many years later that I watched it on cable.
You know what? I was pleasantly surprised.
This isn't a movie to watch for scientific accuracy. This isn't a movie to watch to find deep meaning. This is a movie to sit down, grab your popcorn, and just have fun with it. The plot is straightforward and understandable, the performances are good, the effects are good. It's just a great summer movie romp.
It's not a movie that looks to take itself seriously. Just enjoy it for what it is.
