Sir (I) (2018)

A wonderful movie that will stay with you.
1 August 2023
Sir is a quiet, lovely movie that asks the question "Is love enough?" And it does not answer that question. The viewer is left with possibilities and of course the answer depends on the viewer's life, values and experiences.

Sir is the story of a love that grows between a maid servant from a small village in India and her wealthy, well-connected architect employee. The story opens with his return from the US after a broken engagement. From there we see them interact primarily in his apartment, where she has a small bedroom. A few scenes at social engagements show the rigidity of the social structure that traps them both. Their brief conversations tell us about her very humble origins, her strong spirit, drive and ambitions.

The movie is like a beautiful sketch; drawn with care and precision, no wasted brush strokes. This movie reminded me of The Lunchbox, another wonderful movie about a growing love between two ill-matched people. It stars Tillatoma Shome and Vivek Gomber. Shome was also in another wonderful movie Monsoon Wedding and she shines here.

I wish I'd seen in the theater (where all movies should be seen 😊) but it is currently streaming on Netflix and is well worth your time.

Will Trent (2023– )
8/10
Really Interesting
28 January 2023
I'm beginning to wish movies/TV shows were never from books. For some reason, people seem to expect that the movie/TV show will simply be a filmed version of the book. I remember when The Thorn Birds was aired. Fortunately, it was way before the internet and social media. A lot of people seemed to have problems with the casting because Richard Chamberlain was not an exact replica of the main character.

Same with Jack Reacher. And that is a terrific movie. I don't care that Tom Cruise is not 10' tall or whatever. The movie is great.

Will Trent is very entertaining. And pretty gritty. Just watched the 3rd episode and really liked that it did not have a happy ending. I will definitely keep watching and hope this gets at least a full season, preferably more.

Fun Summer Series
6 August 2022
I like this show and the 2nd season is better than the 1st. This show reminds me of the fun series that used to be on USA network. Light enjoyable. I enjoy the ensemble cast and the leads.

Getting Much Better
5 May 2020
I've watched this show from the beginning and it was quite underwhelming, but I stuck with it - not sure why - and have been rewarded. It's now one of my favorites and the episode that aired today set during the pandemic was great. I like the friendship between Lola and Mark and hope they do NOT turn it into something else. I enjoy watching the development of all the other characters as well. Really hope this show has a second season.

Pretty Good and Getting Better
12 August 2019
It's too bad TV series are not given enough time to jell and find their footing. If a show does not catch on right away, it's often cancelled. I'm glad Instinct was not cancelled after the first season and am fervently hoping it has a season 3. This show was a slow starter, but is steadily getting better. Characters are being fleshed out; other cast members given air time. New, interesting characters have been added.

No Academy Awards, but Funny
14 July 2019
The 8 stars are for how funny I found this movie - not because it is an excellent movie. Moonlight it isn't. There are always two caveats when I review comedies. Number 1, I laugh easily and Number 2, I really like slapstick. There is nothing original at all about this movie. They've made it before and they'll make it again. But I laughed - a lot. And that's all I wanted. It was light and slight and quite enjoyable. It's a fine and funny way to get out of the summer heat.

It's Growing on Me
26 March 2019
Like many reviewers here, I struggled with "why in the world is this on?". But I'm on the computer a lot and needed background noise.

And now I find I like it and look forward to seeing it. It's gotten much better with the addition of Tim Kang as Katsamoto and I like the relationship between Hernandez and Perdita Weeks. The two sidekicks/friends remain a weak spot, but all in all I like it and think it will get even better next season.

Blacklist: FBI Edition
1 March 2019
Stupid premise, but good cast that sold it. This is not an Emmy award winning show, but to my surprise I did enjoy it. I will watch more, but expect this to be cancelled soon.

The story revolves around a brilliant former CIA agent serving time for treason who has a unique set of skills that the FBI needs to stop a terrorist threat. Think Blackhat. There are a few "twists" that almost anyone could see coming, but that did not spoil it for me. If you're looking for great, well-done TV, keep moving - nothing to see here. But if you just need to escape reality for an hour, give it try.

Amateur Hour in Mississippi
10 July 2018
This has the look and feel of a local theater production. Just a bunch of friends having fun. Fortunately it's free on Amazon Prime. I would have been really upset if I'd paid more than 50 cents to see it.

It revolves around 3 friends with various problems who support each other and regularly meet on someone's porch to talk about life, etc.. The resolution to their problems hinges on a new guy in town. Hilarity and high jinks definitely do not ensue.

This movie is not offensive in any way, but is more an exercise in mediocrity.

Enjoyable Nonsense
22 October 2017
OK, this movie is preposterous. But I knew that going in and I did enjoy it. Will probably watch again when it shows up on TV. It's got beautiful scenery and great leads who could probably sell me water if I were drowning in the ocean. This movie is in the same family as another Kate Winslet movie "Labor Day" which was an even more ridiculous romance. Plus this one has a Labrador Retriever! So if you're in the mood for great scenery, a bit of tension and attractive leads, go for it. I did and I'm not sorry.

Really liked this movie

Warning: Spoilers
Apparently Katherine Heigl has attracted a bunch of people who don't like her for whatever reason and therefore don't like any movie she's in. I have always found her an appealing screen presence.

This movie is about a lesbian coming out to her family and how they all react and come to terms with it. Jenny's family is portrayed as both very conventional and very oblivious. A bit hard for me to believe that with the exception of her brother, the thought that Jenny is lesbian never crossed any of their minds.

This is not academy award material, but it is a good movie with a very good cast. The movie is, to use an overused phrase. "fair and balanced", showing the point of view of everyone in the family with none of them being either a villain or a saint.

I would definitely recommend this movie.

Cedar Cove (2013–2015)

Disappointing 2nd Season
5 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed the first season of Cedar Cove - showed some promise. BUT this season has been just plain awful. This is not a Sophomore Slump - this is a full on Sophomore Collapse. Painful. Particularly depressing is how they have the character of Justine Lockhart front & center. I can only assume that the girl/woman who plays Justine must be very rich and paying the producers a lot of money to stay on the show. She is dull as dishwater. It's painful to watch. The only saving grace this season has been Bob & Peggy. Besides Moon, they are the only interesting people in town. Every promising storyline ends up in a ditch somewhere. I may try again next year to see if they can recover, but my expectations will be so low, I'm not sure they can be seen above a blade of grass. VERY DISAPPOINTING.

Great Saturday Afternoon Movie
1 November 2005
I loved this movie. I've read all the kvetching - enough already. One of the best reasons to go to the movies is to have fun. And this movie delivers. It has good guys, bad guys, romance, stunts, a great horse and a cute kid. What more do you want out of life? No, this will not - and should not - win an Oscar for Best Picture of The Year - but so what. Go eat popcorn, drink soda and have some fun. I loved the first picture (thankfully this one does NOT have a head in a jar)and that one was a bit more serious than this one and had greater weight - if that term can be used in connection with a swashbuckler, but this is a good picture and I found it extremely enjoyable.

Lost in Boredom
15 January 2004
What was the point? This has got to be one of the 10 overrated movies of all time -- right up there with Chariots of Fire and Forrest Gump.

This a boring movie about boring people. Spent way too much time with them and could not find anything interesting or appealing about either one of them.

This is one to miss.

Wonderful
31 December 2003
I love this movie & have watched it many times. It's funny, sweet and true love triumphs. And the duet on the stairs is one of the most passionate scenes I've ever had the pleasure of seeing in the movies - it never fails to bring tears to my eyes.
