Black Summer (2019–2021)

Cut your teeth on this fresh meat.

Warning: Spoilers
The sheer onslaught of zombie-fied entertainment over the years might burn you out on the genre. Much like the onset of the rabid, fever of a newly turned walker. But, Black Summer spares us from the quagmire of interpersonal drama coming to the fore while exploited zombie attacks in perfectly timed beats.

Black Summer has character backstory but it doesn't seem to rely on them overtly. They stay true to fast paced action and the expendability of characters therein. In fact, this treatment is merciless which lends a touch of realism to the series.

The characters do link-up during their desperate journey and are faced with even more complicated and dire decisions as they are forced to band together.

A great series to turn your brain off and enjoy the calamity.

Monsterland (2020)

Hit and miss but still entertaining.

The first episode of season one struck me similarly to my seminal reaction to the first X-Files episode. And I was excited with this prospect. Even without Molder and Scully.

However, after watching half of the first season something has become apparent. The performances, production design, cinematography, and general mood are great. The scripts are spotty though. They tend to end abruptly, leaving the conclusions unresolved or "open-ended." And as a viewer I feel that this is a let down, or indicative of lazy writing.

These meandering storylines are allowable for a few, errand episodes within a season, however, it seems to be a series pattern.

None-the-less, I'll continue watching because there are some satisfying pay-offs within this series. You just have to wade through the murk.

Right from the get-go, starting with the clunky looking interactive mere of death, I gladly followed this twisted, squirmy, scary, funny, and, layered story all the way to it's starting, airborne conclusion. I can't wait to order this on DEE VEE DEE!
