That Time of Year (2002)
In the Spirit of Kids....
This is an extremely independent but well executed urban drama about a bunch of teenagers dealing with life in the big NYC. If you can get past some of the amateur acting, the script is pretty good and the overall story is very engaging. Some of the lighter moments are quite entertaining, and the darker scenes are pretty depressing, so all in all it does what it's supposed to do. It's kind of a downer to watch too often but it's certainly worth a view or two if you're into guerrilla film-making - all hand-held, lots of improvisation, very realistic. Just don't expect a happy ending, because half the characters end up dead or alone. If you can stomach that, then it's a good film to check out.
Dreams of an Angel (2004)
Beautiful Film
I had the pleasure of seeing a screening of the rough cut of this film and it's already stunning. With an original score and some further sound work, I can only imagine how wonderful it will be. Already it takes your breath away as a unique depiction of childhood imagination from within the child's mind. The world Nanavati has created with Dreams of an Angel is truly magical and will no doubt leave audiences cheering for more.
An Insomniac's Nightmare (2003)
disturbing much?
maybe i identify with this film cause i live in nyc and suffer from bad insomnia but whatever it is, i must praise the filmmaker on a most amazing job. to do what she did with no budget...wow, thats all i can say. really, really good. like no money was spent on this film and it still blew me away. i definitley suggest checking it out if you can. great directing, fantastic score and of course a script that will knock you on your arse. see it.
