Oppenheimer (2023)
Finally - A film that lives up to the hype
As an older gentleman, I was entirely engrossed in this tale, but what stunned me more was the fact that my highly critical 29 year old daughter, a Marvel and Disney obsessive, rates this as highly as I do!
Without ANY pressure from me either.
Nolan - total respect
Cast - total respect
Story and adaptation - absolute respect.
I really hope this wipes the floor at awards time. Thoroughly deserved and although just having seen this today, I'm already booking up to see it again. No doubt when 4k or blu-ray comes around, it'll be on my list, but even though it was seen on digital IMAX (sadly not able to go to 70mm IMAX in London), it is such a deeply engrossing telling of Oppenheimer's complex character.
Sex Education (2019)
What on earth happened to Season 3?
Boring, unimaginative and completely lost its way. The first two seasons were great, wonderful character development, original, engaging and funny. But season 3? The curse of GOT's latter storytelling!
If there's going to be a season 4, it needs to do much better.
The Lady of Heaven (2021)
Epic
Excellent film - a shame it's not universally accepted and recognized as a work of great cinema. I thoroughly enjoyed it as a truly epic interpretation.
This Time Away (2019)
Surprisingly moving & effective
Always loved Timothy Spall who's done quiet a few diverse characters in his time. Here again is a believable character that most of us of his generation will surely recognize, either through our own experience or someone we know.
This is a great little tale, simple and with much feeling, and a nice ending to make you think about, family, those we have lost and maybe how we can move on with our time - at least that my take on it anyway, so I rate this highly indeed.
Jurassic World (2015)
C'mon - perfectly reasonable sequel
Plenty of nods to predecessors and a perfectly reasonable development if Hammond's dream in a major park becoming operational, with the inevitable mishaps - I liked it, family and friends liked it and frankly got the entertainment from it we wanted - it was enjoyed a great deal more than JP2, and worked far better by keeping the story and the action localised too. Happy to give this a good score.
Dragged Across Concrete (2018)
Tense and brutal - absolutely recommend.
Cannot understand the negative reviews - this was a wholly absorbing thriller that builds the characters beautifully. And the moments of violence were truly nasty but completely fitting for the events and showed the real lack of emotion of the villains.
Great film, and even though my other half has an attention span of a couple of hours at best, this had her transfixed to the very end. And absolutely loved Mel Gibson & Vince Vaughn by the way.
