Red Eye (2005)
Ahh.. Wes Craven.
Ahh.. Wes Craven. Truly one of the modern masters of horror, with films like A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Hills Have Eyes, and Scream. With movies like that under his belt, I had high expectations for this film, and for the most part, I was satisfied.
Our movie begins as we meet Lisa Reisert (McAdams), a hard-working hotel manager who is constantly on the go. She handles stressful situations well and enjoys a sea-breeze every once in a while. After attending the funeral of her grandmother in Dallas, Lisa must fly back to Miami to make it to work the next day. Turns out her flight gets delayed, the first of many problems for Lisa. McAdams shines in this role, and it is clear that her talent and beauty have been wasted in the past with throwaway roles in The Hot Chick and Mean Girls. Then again, she didn't have to do much acting. That part was left to Cillian Murphy, who plays the intensely creepy passenger Jack Rippner. He runs in to Lisa in the airport and kicks off a friendly relationship right away. As Lisa finally is able to board the plane, she finds out she's sitting next to Jack. Creepy. The plane lifts off to some turbulence, but Lisa is on her way to Miami. This is when all hell breaks loose. Jack reveals his true identity, a professional hit-man. He then gives Lisa one hell of an ultimatum. Either move checked in Department of Homeland Security William Keefe (Jack Scalia) to a room where he can be assassinated, or let another one of Jacks men kill Lisa's father. I won't reveal anything else, but it will have you on the edge of your seat.
Wes Craven displays many of his old tension creating tricks in the movie. Just the whole atmosphere of the plane creates an intense claustrophobia, and he also uses his old beauty (Lisa) and the beast (Jackson) playoff of characters. He also uses another old trick during the exciting climax, of having an "in the house" chase that worked so well in Nightmare and Scream. Some things are different though. This film is much more of a thriller than a horror. Also, instead of revolving around a group of stupid teenagers, Lisa's character is very sharp and besides some very minimal help from a co-worker, she is on her own.
This film is not perfect thought. Clocking in at only 1 hour and 15 minutes, much of the film is left unexplained. Who is Jack? Why did he want Keefe dead? What happens to the men who actually attempt the assassination. All this is left unexplained for more of a "you go girl!" kind of ending. But despite these minor flaws, Red Eye is a rare terrific modern thriller that will keep you interested throughout. Definitely recommended.
The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)
Avoid at all costs!
The Exorcism of Emily Rose Starring Laura Linney Directed by Scott Derickson After the death of a girl, a priest is put on trial for murder, claiming that his performance of an exorcism caused the death. Yeah, sure. Really it's just a bad episode of Law & Order extended over what feels like 6 hours. We only see Emily Rose on screen for about 20 minutes in the whole movie combined, and its all in flashbacks. The rest is spent watch a court case. A horribly boring, long, drawn out court case. The only thing that saves this movie is in fact the exorcism scene. Unfortanetly its WAY to little WAY to late. All the footage you see in the trailer is gone in about 15 minutes. Why? Because they wanted us to believe this was a horror film. I can not stress this enough, THIS IS NOT A HORROR FILM! IT IS A COURTROOM DRAMA!!!! And its not even dramatic. I hated this movie and so did everyone else in the theater. I was biting my fingers to avoid laughing the whole time. Avoid at all costs! 2/10
The Creeping Terror (1964)
The Worst Movie of ALL-TIME
Forget Manos, this is without a doubt the worst movie EVER MADE! The incredibly dull monster, bad dubbing, bad acting, annoying narration and lack of narration during parts where you need it, the stupid couples who never learned how to run, the idiot military who cant figure out how to shoot a gun, the unexplained sub plots,no Torgo, EVERYTHING IS WRONG IN THIS MOVIE!! Even watching it on MST3K is nearly impossible, but if you are going to watch it, use Mike and the bots!!
The movie starts with stock footage of a space shuttle lifting playing backwards. A couple and a cop decide to investigate, blah blah blah monster eats people, blah blah blah monster explodes. AVOID THIS FILM BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY!
