Disco Pigs (2001)
B-E-A-utiful
This film actually cannot be described successfully without first being viewed. It is a film that I think everyone should have seen at some point in their life.
The storyline is written well, and it is clear from the beginning the film has been adapted from a play. But this does not hinder its effect whatsoever. In fact it makes me wish i'd have seen it as a play also.
Cillian Murphy looks delightful as ever, and I believe this film shows his incredible acting talent to the maximum. Elaine Cassidy also performs brilliantly as his soulmate, drifting away from him as they grow up.
The scenes are put together well, and I have such clear and beautiful images in my head , especially as Pig and Runts dream is acted out (KING AND QUEEN).
The soundtrack to the film is another strength, The music is haunting and fantastic.
This film I guarantee does exactly as it's tagline says. I have watched it everyday since I bought it. That to me says enough about it's brilliance. Please watch it. You won't regret.
Around the World in 80 Days (2004)
Family entertainment, but nothing more
Around the World in 80 days **
Another remake. Pleasant jolly film, full of cameo roles including the Wilson brothers! Hoorah! This is one for the family that's for sure, with a few giggles and a happy ending. Much of the camera/map work is that of Moulin Rouge, which made the film interesting. Also the several locations used mean the audience doesn't get bored.
The only problem is that there is just not enough story for me to think 'wow' and also the humour was quite sparcley spread out.
John Cleese had the smallest part known to man, as did Macy Gray and Richard Branson, whereas other jems such as Robert Schneider, Arnie and as I said Owen and luke Wilson really picked up the smiles. But we must remember that half the joy from the film came from seeing these different faces and not the actual humour. Jim Broadbent (Moulin Rouge/ The Visitors/ Bridget Jones) was as usual the star of the show (that guy is amazing) and Steeve Coogan never ceased to amaze, but Jackie Chan is clearly ageing, and although he can still fight like a crazy maniac, he was not on top form.
Verdict: Go see it with the family, don't bother if not.
Spider-Man 2 (2004)
Didn't meet expectation at all...
(slight spoilers) Spiderman 2 ***
This movie was a TOTAL letdown. Man, this film got so hyped up to be the 'movie of the decade'. Pfh!I wouldn't even class it as movie of the week!
The opening credits were quite impressive, with drawings and photos from spiderman interweaved with pictures from the actual comics- then going straight into a very funny scene involving pizza delivery. I thought "this movie is gonna be great". How I was wrong!
It was sssslllllllooooooowwwww. Parts of it were like watching paint dry. The whole film moved at the pace of a snail, with no point whatsoever. Even the special effects didn't seem so 'special' anymore. The film really picked up about half an hour from the end, with one tense moment, and a very nice suprise to see Willem Dafoe back on the scene!
So what were the good points of this film. Why did it even deserve 3 stars from me? Well, it knew how to build tension in places, and as usual the characters were played in style, showing true human emotion sometimes, and there were also some comical moments, spiderman in the lift with the dog walker ("nice spidey suit"), or the time when Spiderman washes his suit and turns his whites red and blue! So the film wasn't all bad.
Dr Ock (Alfred Molina- Identity/Chocolat) was played with the most skill and style and made the audience really sympathise with him. In a way this was a bit of a downside because there was really no baddy to hate in this movie.
Overall, entertaining, but too over hyped, so therefore a let down.
Shrek 2 (2004)
Very impressed
Shrek 2 *****
Nice one. at last a sequel I can praise! And dare I say...better than the 1st??
Very funny antics as the green guy and his donkey friend return for more fun in fairytale land. The jokes are great throughout, and it seems impossible to ever be bored at any point in the film.
If you don't know who does what voices before you watch the film- half the fun is guessing! But not even that can make the film better than it was. The animation= amazing. The cast = amazing. The characterisation =amazing. Well done Dreamworks! Not a bad word to say.
Verdict: GO SEE IT!!
Bagland (2003)
Bad but Good
The movie wasn't absolutly brilliant, and wasn't too gripping.
However, even though it wasn't the best movie i'd ever seen, i quite enjoyed it. I thought it was good because of: A) The cinematography B) because it addressed quite a lot of issues about teen problems
It was also interesting because I love seeing foreign films and looking at different cultures. I went to see the film as part of a film festival where I live, it was the first film to be screened.
It got me hooked in the first 5 mins, but I kinda lost my attention after a bit. There was no real story, or buildup, but the characters were very believable, which made up for the lack of major story.
The way it was filmed also made up for the lack of plot. I loved the camera work, it was almost like watching a day in the life of Millie, like she was a real person.
The ending to the film was quite sudden, but had a nice lead into the credits.
The only confusion I had was why the film was named "Scratch" (Danish=Bagland, translated to Scratch in English).
The film is probably most appealing to teenagers who have had problems (thats all of us right??) but problems in the specific areas of say sex/drug abuse/violence.
The Passion of the Christ (2004)
in awe
*small spoilers*
There are thousands of critics having a HUGE go at this film. But my question is, do they understand the Bible? Do they read it? Because if they did, they would see that this film is so close to the truth you believe it is real.
Jesus is played excellently, just fantastic. He was so close to how I imagine Jesus to be.
From the first 5 minutes of the film, it had me in amazement. I thought the dramatic licence Mel Gibson took for ideas such as the Devil and snake and the children were very clever.
Then the violence started, which made my friend feel sick, she couldn't watch, but I needed to. Its one thing reading about Jesus' suffering, but a totally different thing seeing it. Don't get me wrong, the violence affected me, but in a good way. It had be in floods of tears, because it was my sin that put Jesus' there, which Mel Gibson showed so wonderfully.
The other great thing about this film is that it had the most beautiful scene in that I have ever watched. The scene is where Jesus makes the tall table, and Mary tries to sit at it with him. How lovely it was that Mel Gibson kept flashing back to scenes that linked with Jesus' situation. Although the film was meant to show the last 12 hours of Jesus' life, the flashbacks really added to the story, giving it a real feel of the story of Jesus.
I think people should stop criticising Mel Gibson for making this film. He has taken on such a challenge, and in my eyes has succeeded.
Before I saw the film, I began to lose faith in Christianity, I didn't understand the Bible properly, and it seemed like I had no time for Jesus. But seeing the film has opened my eyes, and now i see Jesus' as such a real person, who cares for me and who i have so often just left out of my life. He died and went thorough all that suffering for me, and it wasn't until I saw The passion of the Christ that I fully understood Jesus' suffering, and what he went through to save others.
In conclusion, thankyou Mel Gibson(although I know you won't be reading this!)for making this film and helping me to understand Jesus more and for anyone who is contemplating seeing the film- please see it. The violence is nothing to watch compared to what Jesus actually went through to save you from your sins.
Fight Club (1999)
Powerful and jaw-dropping
My friend recommended this movie to me. I thought it would just be a complete blood fest, without much story. However, I was so suprised, I sat and watched it all, AMAZED. I thought it was absolutly fantastic! Brad Pitt played his role excellently, but I think the credit for acting should go to Edward Norton. His role was full of black-humour, and he played it perfectly. The story was powerful, it was clever and beautiful, all about finding your inner self. It had so many twists, and I never got bored at any point in the film. I think it's also important not to let the violence put you off. The film is about so much more, and works on so many levels, I think everyone could bring out a different meaning. This is one of the greatest films I have ever watched- and I would recommend it to anyone. I told my Mum to sit down and watch it!
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)
This film is amazing
I loved the film from start to finish. The first time I watched it I laughed so much it hurt. The second time I watched it I listened more and got into the story. Its a fantastic film that I recommend to anyone. I hope people who are offended by the use of drugs don't switch it off too soon- because the film has much deeper meanings.
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Amazing...truly amazing
This film is the best film I have ever seen. it is beautiful.
Johnny Depp is as per usual excellent. This is the best film I have ever seen him in. The character of Edward is played so brilliantly, he can make anyone laugh or cry in the drop of a hat.
It is a love story which also has the power to show how people view others in society and how feelings can easily change towards someone.
I don't think I ever will find a better, more beautiful film than Edward Scissorhands.
