Forces spéciales (2011)
Not that good
Only minor spoilers...
I watched this movie because it was made by French and really hoped for some realistic "non-Luc Besson" action. I believed this movie would really show us how special forces work. And as for the first part of the movie (the rescue action) I really felt like I was there. It was all made believable and I was hungry to watch more. Unfortunately it soon took an ugly turn and the whole movie turned into some kind of a road movie without an interesting plot.
I took the first hint when our special forces are pursued by some 10 to 15 Taliban fighters. SF lie behind a rock and wait for them to come closer until they open fire. But guess what. They don't fire from behind the cover. Instead they choose to stand up (or kneel, whatever) and expose themselves to enemy fire. Of course none of them gets hurt but hey, isn't it better for your aim to lie down? And isn't int better for your safety to shoot from a cover?
The movie went on in this fashion and I soon realized what it means to be in special forces. It means to shoot the enemy (who is doing nothing but running towards you as if their guns only worked at 20 meters distance), you must always stand to provide a better target (preferably in an open area) and never rely on modern technology to get you out of enemy territory.
There was a bright side to this one as well. They did not use English as the first language in the movie (as they usually do). French was used, sometimes the native tongue and sometimes English. Special effects were also good but the special forces were definitely not...
Revolver (2005)
Watch this masterpiece 3 times and you will understand...
This review doesn't contain spoilers. It only explains the main point of the movie.
I can see that lot of people here gave low ratings because the movie is too complex for them to understand. Well it was complex for me too when I first saw it. But I was able to grasp the main concept of it, which is our EGO. Our ego that makes us do all the things we do... Actually the first four or five citations at the beginning of the movie all refer to it. I liked it the first time, but loved it the second time.
Anyway, I think this still is a movie for some 5-10% of the world population. While it has some good actions scenes, they are not just some mindless shootouts and beatings. They serve to depict the world of greed which is a perfect nutrition for our ego. We also have a charismatic Jason Statham in the main role, but this time he reminds us more of a human than some dauntless superhero who beats the hell out of every living being.
And if you watch it for the third time, you will finally be able to understand every detail and appreciate the depth of it. This is a perfect movie!
Note: I watched another version of this movie and it was a complete mess! I think it is shorter and also had some psychologists at the end of the movie talking about ego. I think it was European version of the movie (maybe only Czech version). The scenes have been scattered and some even omitted. I don't know if there are two versions or if some "talented" screenwriter just messed with it, but don't watch the other version!
Underworld: Evolution (2006)
What is this???
Seriously! WHAT is this?! You call this a story? Who wrote this script?
Imagine someone offering this to a movie company or whatever... "A story? Oh, come now! Why would you bother yourself with that? We have better things than that. Like CGI or Kate Beckinsale. Dark European country of Hungary, where for some reason cops look like they guard a national border all the time and everyone looks like a bum and where you can speak Hungarian or Russian if you like..." "All right, I'm convinced! Here is your budget!"
What the...?
It seems to me like there is some kind of ancient cliché pattern that every Hollywood movie has to follow!
In this case: - we got some old grandpa vampire and his two sons that are pure evil for some reason
- one of them is trying to become a god but he first needs to get to his brother for some reason - for this he needs two keys (yes, that's right, welcome to the wonderland)
- in the end bad guys die but only after they managed to kill everyone else except the two main characters (because let's be frank, they didn't deserve to live, they are just some people trying to help our two beautiful, god-like heroes)
One scene almost surprised me, when one of the main characters died. Oh wait, he is SPECIAL! So he comes around to save the day at the end.
Oh, and if you like clichés and irrational things in general, than you will love the ending. That is like the mother of all...
- a bridge segment will collapse under a careful step of an ordinary human soldier, but if a giant werewolf jumps on it (or a helicopter lands on it), it's just fine
- these are vampires and werewolves, yet they fight like some shaolin monks or street fighters
- William, the werewolf who gets freed by his brother Marcus turns out to be a lame white wolf who likes to stand on the scene growling, while the others are feeding him bullets. What is he a masochist?
- Oh yeah, the scene when Marcus is being held by the large door while the fighting continues is just so stupid. It looks like he needs to go but the toilet is occupied.
- Also what do you think will happen when Kate starts to fight the bad guy Marcus in front of a rolling blades of a helicopter?
- And the cheesy ending of Kate saying: "I look into the light with new hope..." You can't look into the light silly, you are a vampire! :)))
So no, don't watch it...
Seriously though - don't.
