Lift (I) (2024)

Fun imitation of a heist film.
12 January 2024
Not great but fun. Decenct enough but I thought the film struggled til the 3rd Act. The connecting scenes could have used better hooks. It terms of the genres it borrows from it's the shallow end of the pool. But splashing in the shallow end can be fun too. Gugu Mbatha-Raw (so in love with her now) has the only interesting character arc and she carries it well as she's fun to watch. But the shallow end of the pool prevents her role from being great. Script could have used another pass to elevate it, so the actors could've had some real juicy roles to bite onto, but we're in the shallow end of the pool so there you go.

Twisted Metal (2023– )

Genius level writing
4 August 2023
I never imagined Twisted Metal would make a great TV show. But here it is. Great characters are everywhere. Tons of Fan service for those that remember the game, even Sweet Tooth the psychopath he is , is a likable character, cause the character is well written and well acted. Appropriately uber violent for better or worse. As a writer I'm totally jealous, I would have loved the chance to write something like this. All the humor works balancing the violence and we get a love story to boot. Made me want to fire up my PS1 (I still have it) and play Twisted Metal again. Brilliant and genius I binge watched in one day.

I enjoyed but it wasn't really structured correctly for a horror movie
9 July 2023
This was more of a drama with some horror elements. Because it wasn't structured for horror and lacked horror conventions this will give the impression that the movie drags or is slow.

There was never really a place where I felt any real anxiety or apprehension not because these elements are there but because when there is horror it feels rather random and lacking tension. The build up of emotions from act 1, to 2 to 3 really isn't there. The film maker does some smart things with a low budget and small cast. I look forward to future projects from this filmmaker as he or she improves their craft. I really liked it except it just wasn't structured it correctly on the page for horror.

Loved it
13 May 2023
Reminiscent of the Hong Kong action movies of the 80s and 90s, although the gunfights aren't as "balletic". Incredible cinematography. Every scene looks amazing. Well acted all around, even if the characters are a bit one dimensional, they are still characters you will love and love to hate. I did have some issues with it but in face of how good it is, I can easily overlook those issues. Great effects (though they are graphic). Guessing it had a sizable budget. Hope to see more of Shella Mae Romualdo in the future. Fell in love with her right away. It was great to indigenous Filipino representation.

Wednesday (2022– )

The writing is damn'ner perfect.
8 December 2022
As a writer usually I think, I could totally write something better than what I just saw, but sometimes I watch something that makes me realize I have a long way to go. "Wednesday" is that show. I'm jealous, the writing in this show is so good. If you're a writer this is a great show to analyze. The setups, payoffs, Wednesday character arc, the mystery and intrigue is all so high level. Truly binge worthy. And just plain fun to watch.

Even the "wokeness" people love to complain about these days is so well done. It's easy to agree with most of Wednesday is saying. I especially loved her dialogue.

I was bummed when I finished it, I wanted more adventures at nevermore. Fingers are crossed for a second season. Give me more of Joy Sunday please!

Great low budget storytelling featuring Filipino folklore
10 June 2022
Guess I'm lucky, my wife can understand bikol, so she translated. Which is spoken widely throughout the film without subtitles. That is frustrating. And anak is spelled wrong consistently.

There's some continuity issues, some dodgy CGI and the action sequences weren't great but I really enjoyed this fantasy romp through Bicol folklore. Mercedes Cabral is fantastic.
