The Ultimate Warrior (1975)
Does the job, stands the test of time, why the low ratings?
I first saw this in my early teens, most likely before anything that might have upstaged it like Mad Max, and then again in my mid fifites. In some eyes it might have paled in comparison to what came after, no cool road machines, punk raiders, or Mel Gibson. But in it's modest way it works very well, and a cast abounding with gravity raises it further. A satisfyingly long finale and strong end seal the deal. Over all, though 40 years difference gives you different eyes, for me it has stood the test of time......I don't get the low ratings....
Self/less (2015)
Solid Sci-fi Action Thriller
An interesting, but relatively simple premise and plot, sometimes predictable, very well directed, acted, and shot. In different hands, with different choices this could have been schlok, but as it was it was solid, likable, and believable. Light, near-future sci-fi, fist fights, gun fights, a car chase/game of chicken, themes of family, emotions....things are made obvious, but not spoon-fed.....I was impressed and highly recommend it.
Killing Them Softly (2012)
Self-absorbed waste of time and talent
If they had cut back on the conversation and pretention, they might have saved some time for proper story telling....I wasn't so much bored as left thinking "is that it?" at the end. Apparently haters like me are missing some sort of point. Well, hanging your point on some flesh and bones might leave it a little less crumpled.
Rojst (2018)
Keeping it Simple, Getting It Right
Living in Czechoslovakia/The Czech Republic in the 1990s so much of this rang true as far as life in this part of the world at that time. I would say they got the architecture, decore, fashion, and the way people behaved and communicated down very well, it was so much like what was still around and what I was told about (though in a different country), I saw the remenents of it, this, I would guess, was was it was really like. It was also shot and acted very well.
As far as the story goes, I don't get how so many reviewers complain of being confused. There were the usual multiple threads, suspects, and gaps in the story for the viewers or protagonists to fill in. People should watch a little more closely and accept the fact that not everything is laid out for you and that things tie up, or sometimes don't, in the end.
In general there was nothing flashy, the impressive thing was the everyday detail and convincing human aspect, like I said, they kept it simple in that sense, and got it right.
I would hope there will be another series.
How It Ends (2018)
Haters gonna hate...
...I enjoyed it. I appreciated the lack of bombast. Could be a good start to a Netflix series.
