Cool Dog (2010)
Just how bad can they get???
The acting is awful, the plot is predictable. And excuse me, but when did Louisiana get mountains? The ONLY so called mountain in Louisiana is actually a summit called Driskill Mountain that is in reality a tall hill. Then there is the small fact that NO ONE even sounded like they were from Louisiana! I tried to figure out just what Parish of Louisiana they were trying to portray but as none of the main characters sounded southern and there was that mountain in the background it was impossible. The only person that even tried to sound southern was Kent Jude Bernard and he just had a very small part. Even my grandchildren got bored with this movie! Now maybe, and I mean just maybe, this movie would be good if you were having a bout of insomnia and needed something to put you to sleep. Most likely though it would just annoy you to the point of not being able to sleep so forget that idea! Just don't even bother with it is my advise.
The Help (2011)
Worth seeing, especially if you have not read the book
Had I not just read the book, I would have loved this movie. It made me both laugh and cry. Octavia Spencer was the perfect choice for Minnie and Viola Davis nailed it as Abileen. Emma Stone, although very short to be playing Skeeter pulled it off so well I forgot how short she was except when next to her mother. The story line is such a good one that even with the changes they made it stood up well.
As far as the changes. They were disappointing and really not necessary. What it ended up doing was sugar coating things that did not need to be sugar coated. We all know that in the South in the early 1960's not only was it illegal for anyone white or black to tell the truth of how unjustly blacks were treated, it was also very, very dangerous. By sugar coating that fact it takes away the impact of what a book such as The Help would have truly been.
Having grown up in the South and being of the last generation of white children raised by wonderful black women I wish they would have left in more of what a real risk any person of color took going against the "rules". The people in real life that took part in bringing about a change were all heroes that do not get enough recognition for what they did for all of us.
