Single handedly this is one of the most enticing shows I have seen. I haven't written a review on this show solely for the fact that there was clearly a bigger picture in terms of how the characters in this show were to develop. The reason why I say that this is a show worthy of fans that are fans of Breaking Bad is down to the change that each and every character has over the course of the current three season slate that this show has had.
Nowadays we are overwhelmed by superheroes, poorly written shows and a plethora of irrelevant and poorly conceived series, however, Start Up is one of the few exceptions and delighted with how the innocence of modern day people looking to better their lives are corrupted through the success of ideas set about through good intentions.
No spoilers are to be made during this review, however, it must be said that the transition from people looking to build up a business empire with a bunch of misfits with differing moral compasses and past experiences makes for a great deal of conflict and engrossing dynamic throughout. Season 1 deals with a dirty cop. Season 2 deals with the repercussions of that relationship, and season 3 brings about the consequences of their god intentions, with the gray areas that they have on a personal level. Ron Perlman is brilliant as the man looking to be the "big dog " again and claim past glories. His daughter is the future, with great ambition with morals. Nick (Adrian Brody) is the boyfriend intricately linked to the family looking to make his own mark on the world but makes questionable decisions along the way and Ronald (Edi Gathegu) is brilliant as the street wise former gangster looking to move on from his past life but can't quite be fully rid of it.
Up until the end of season 3 the writing has been superb and the twists make for highly intense viewing. So much so that I have binged the entire season in just one day. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a fresh take on dark gangster, morally ambiguous dramas such as these. If you have never seen this series, then I advise to watch and enjoy something that is quite rare on the small screen. A modern, relevant and courageous approach to the issues that modern death people try to solve, with the potential drawbacks to good intentions.
The world is not as easy to make it a better place as much as we thought! See this for the great show that it is and enjoy feeling like you have been part of something that has been media relevant over the last few years.
