Bang Bang (2014)
Bang Bang is how Dhoom 3 should have been
It makes me cringe to see the way Hrithik has lost time since he debuted in 2000. He takes 2-3 years to complete movies like Guzaarish and Mohenjodaro where his performances add up to just about tolerable levels if not bad. Its not his terrain. I am a firm believer that one should exploit his USP. And Hrithik's USP is the Bang Bang/Dhoom genre. It took him 8 years to get back to this genre. Katrina on the other hand has been smart in choosing her scripts and roles. She knows her USP and largely her career decisions have been better. This is why she continues to stay on top in an industry/country she was once alien to despite desperate PR attempts by the likes of Paadakauns and so on.
Bang Bang is the remake of knight and day. A film which starred Tom Cruise (equivalent to the stage SRK is in right now) and Cameron Diaz (someone like Preity Zinta). When you cast such old exhausted has- been actors for this genre, you are going to get crap. It would be equivalent to Bang Bang starring SRK and Preity Zinta. Its a disaster right on paper. This is the mistake bang bang makers corrected in the remake. I am not going to talk much about its story as its already known. Some scenes like the Aeroplane flight scenes, drugging scenes etc are modified/Indianized because they have to add songs. The first half has some cheesy comedy scenes involving Katrina's Dadi which I didn't like. I don't think when you have cast such big stars you need to give screen time to side actors. They should have negligible role. That includes scenes of Danny/Pawan Malhotra/Javed Jaffery and so on. Their roles are not much but why to give them even that much screen time? No one comes to watch them.
That brings me to the leads – Hrithik and Katrina. Both are in top form and continue from where they left in ZNMD. In fact they have consolidated on it big time with the best kissing scene i have seen in Bollywood since Arjun and Sasha Agha's Aurangzeb. Matlab Poori Tarah Se Le Liya Hai Hrithik Ne Katrina Ko is film Mein :D Salman and Ranbir must be fuming.
The action scenes are better than Dhoom3, Kick because Hrithik has done most of his stunts by himself. Hrithik surprised me in the hand to hand combats. They were well choreographed. Slow motion was avoided. The first roof run scene was good though Hrithik used cables occasionally. They had hyped the water ski scene a lot but it didn't impress me because cables were used extensively and one could see that in the body language of Hrithik.
Footnote: A lot of khan-paid reviews/critics/fans will compare this remake of Knight and Day to Raid Redemeption or Skyfall and bash it for its story. You know the ones who loved Ra.One, Kick and Dhoom 3.
Serbuan maut 2: Berandal (2014)
Raid 2 is a step up for Iko Uwais towards the best action star
I am not going to talk about its story at all. There is a decent bit of plot but you can read it on Wikipedia :) What I want to talk about is the direction, how many action scenes does the film have and how good they are.
There are only 3 fight scenes in the first half each one of short duration. Two fight scenes are in prison. The first prison fight is like the Oldboy scene which was done in a narrow lane with a gang attacking one person. That scene had only one camera angle which was the side view angle. Here some more camera angles are used – side, top back and the fight is more intense. But its very short may be 1-1.5 minutes duration and ends abruptly. Not much in terms of any innovation in choreography but camera-work is good. There is one shadow boxing scene right after this scene where Iko Uwais displays tremendous box-speed on the wall. Its a vast improvement from his earlier outing in the Raid Redemption. He has bettered himself in terms of speed and seems to have got some training in Wing Chun boxing.
The second fight scene is a prison riot where Iko saves the son of the gangster. Visually its like the riot mission of GTA Vice City PC game. It was a good opportunity to choreograph a one-vs-many fight but the director Gareth Evans limited it to one-vs-one and max one-vs-two fight. The fight is choreographed well but there is too much shaky camera work in this scene. Background music is very good in this scene and also throughout the film. Cinematography is quite good. Slow motion is used at appropriate places and never during the fight which was good. The third fight scene is in a warehouse and its a regular fight scene evading the possibility of one-vs-many.
The film has better action scenes post intermission. It starts with the fight scene of a female henchwoman "Hammer Girl" with a gang of armed men in a train. The scene reminds you of a similar Uma Thurman fight scene in Kill Bill but unlike that shitty OTT scene directed by that idiot wannabe action filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, Gareth Evans has done a good job. The scene is very bloody and gory but quite realistic. Julie Estelle as the Hammer girl is not an exceptional talent like a Jeeja Yanin but she did well being an Indonesian model. There is one fight scene of Yayan Ruhian who played Mad Dog in part 1 and those who have seen part 1 know how good he was in the climax fight scene. He has 2 fight scenes in this, both choreographed very well. In fact his scene is better than even the scenes of Iko Uwais. He has knowledge of parkour combined with Penchak Silat. His death scene is classic not to be missed.
The climax has 2 good fight scenes back to back. One is Iko Uwais vs Hammer girl & baseball bat man and another between Iko Uwais and Cecep Arif Rahman (guy in the first pic). First scene is a medley of Kama and baseball bat fight scene using techniques from Penchak Silat, Kung Fu and a bit of Kali. Basketball bat is used as the stick fight from Kali while the Kama is used for Silat and Kung Fu style. Iko Uwais uses Silat, Taekwondo and couple of Jujitsu ground techniques (joint locks, leg locks etc) this time which we never saw in part 1. So this was good.
The final fight is a one-on-one between Iko Uwais and Cecep Arif Rahman and its the best choreographed scene technically. Various forms of fight styles are used and it ends with Kama fight with Iko Uwais slitting and slashing every part of Arifs body and then slashes his throat out, not recommended for fainthearted.
Overall, I found that the film has good action scenes, better than any action film released in recent years but there is no one-vs-many scene in entire film. The USP of the film is the gore and violence, not technique and choreography. Mostly what we see in usual films is when bullet is fired or sword slashes the body, the screen blacks out cut to the next scene. But director Gareth Evans likes showing what happens after a bullet hits the head point blank, how the skull tears apart, how the Kama slashes the throat and how the veins and meat come out and so on :D
A word on Iko Uwais in comparison to Tony Jaa, Micheal Jai white and Scott Adkins:Iko Uwais has bettered himself a lot in this outing. He has learnt some more fighting styles which I talked above. But I will still put him behind Tony Jaa and Scott Adkins as of now. He is surely the more quicker among the 4 but he is not yet ready to give us a good one- vs-many believable action scene. He has to learn some parkour techniques. I would put him above Micheal Jai White though.
Tom yum goong 2 (2013)
Wirework ,CGI and some bias plays a spoilsport
Finally saw TYG 2. I have to say this is the worst tony Jaa film so far.Not one bit because of Jaa but entirely due to its director Prachya Pinkaew. Cant believe he blew such a great opportunity after giving us Ong Bak and Tom Yum Goong. The basic plot is more or less the same as TYG 1 so no point in wasting time in talking about it.Lets get straight to the action.I don't understand this need to go on broad canvas and ruin the kind of films that you stood for.(Raid 2 looks to be going the same route from the last 2 promos).
There are several scenes were there was such a huge opportunity to choreograph a great fight scene but the director simply ruined it by his sudden obsession with wire work and poor CGI.
The biggest irritation for me was to see the director desperately trying to pass off Mareese Crump as this newest greatest martial artist on the block. Watch him just for 2 minutes and you realise its all a farce. Crump is not 1/10th as good as Prachya thinks he is.All his fight scenes with Jaa are poorly choreographed in an attempt to make Crump look good. You can clearly see Jaa has been asked to go half -speed and cut down on his moves to make it look like an even contest and it is all the more disbelieving that someone as novice in Capoeira as Crump can match upto Jaa when we have already seen how convincingly he took on the much superior Capoeira fighter Lateef Crowder in TYG1.The only scenes choreographed well are the ones that do not involve Crump , most definitely the one in the hotel room where an unarmed Jaa fights several armed men. Its a pretty short scene but expertly choreographed and such 1-2 scenes give glimpses of the Tony Jaa we know.Sadly the director had other ideas.
Jeeja Yanin is wasted and most of her stunts have wire work. Less said about RZA the better. This one needed a villain who could match up to the level of Jaa , someone like Scott Adkins perhaps.Tony Jaa has admittedly slowed down and looks a bit overweight than his usual lean self. age is catching up.I know Fast and furious is a crap series but i am hoping to b surprised by Jaa's outing in it. Hope they utilize his potential.
Yi dai zong shi (2013)
Too fake a film
Stopped halfway through the grandmaster (loosely based on ipmans life). its too fake a film for my liking. Forget the wirework in the fights, even so many normal scenes are slow motion for no reason (rain drops, motion of the sleeves during fights, clothes, breaking of glasses etc).may be to make the film look obscure and deep. Tony Leung is more like Neo of The Matrix than a normal human being ,let alone Ipman. Zhang Zi is shown as his love interest who is the daughter of a retired grandmaster and challenges ipman to fight her. There is a scene in it where they are fighting in slow motion and while falling, there is a close up of ipman and her face to show that she is falling in love with her while she falls on the ground. that scene made me realise this movie is just not cut for me.Donnie yens Ipman was a masterpiece but watching this makes me respect Donnie Yens version even more
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
Entertaining but stupid
Just back from the wolf of wall street. Its story is based on autobiography written by Jordan Belfort. So as is usual with all autobiography, the author will portray himself a hero. Its an entertaining film but a stupid film. Right from the selling techniques of de caprio to the money laundering in swiss banks , everything is too convenient and at times plain stupid. Its supposed to be a dark comedy but the tone is Over the top.De Caprio is good in some scenes and has overacted in a lot of scenes. His scene where he has an excessive effective of a drug is so loud and drags too much its almost irritating. He looks like an overgrown kid with wrinkles. Jonah Hill is also good in some scenes and hammed in many other. Margot Robbie plays De Caprio's wife. Looks hot and acts the best among the cast. I am surprised how it has won so many award nominations, May be due to the big names associated. That is how most of the jury around the world works
Ip Man (2008)
A Masterpiece in Martial arts genre
Had heard a lot about IPman. Finally got a chance to see it. it literally blows you away! Read that is semi biographical martial arts film very loosely based on the life of Yip Man, a grandmaster of the martial art Wing Chun and master of Bruce Lee. The film focuses on events in Ip's life that supposedly took place in the city of Foshan during the Sino-Japanese War. Brilliantly directed, acted. Outstanding Background Music. The action choreography is right among the best. To say that Donnie Yen is brilliant is an understatement. He is a legend, right up there with the top martial artist actors ever. The 10 men fight in the dojo , you have to see it to believe how great Donnie yen is. Its a moment where a true wing chun grandmaster unleashes himself all guns blazing.
will only say – I am not in the capacity to judge someone like Donnie yen I can only stand up and applaud his talent.
Dhoom:3 (2013)
Baap Ka Badla Lene Chale Judwa
I know this is a cheesy title .But this is all I can come up with. I am contaminated right now with the cheesy hammy cinema of the 1980s and 1990s that this film is.
This is a story about two kids who grow up to be two retarded clowns ,one a little more retarded than the other and their retarded father and the retarded circus that they own which has only one trick from the start to the end.Too much retardation at display but cant help it.
The film starts with typical cheesy 80s scene where the kid is surrounded by adult goons and he just beats them up (yes he does) and slowly runs and escapes and the goons just keep watching him admiring how he runs. This habit of watching and admiring is repeated n times in the film so its not an exception. The father has taken some loan from a bank and he is unable to repay it. He tries to convince them by doing a magic trick copied from prestige but the bankers have seen that film so they are not impressed but father is unhappy that they cant appreciate this cheesy Bollywood version of the film and he commits suicide!
The kid grows up to be a clown thief who is introduced semi nude with his back which has flab on the side waist. He is determined to bring this bank to bankruptcy to avenge his father and he keeps stealing money from it and throws it in the air every time. May be he doesn't know that bank has hard earned public deposit money, not just the owners money but its OK, he is a villain,so what if he is giving an excuse of his father to justify his robbery. Then he does the tap dance which is only meant to embarrass him. It is neither needed nor expected from a two left feet dancer like Aamir. Then Abhishek is introduced in a kind of Over the top south style action that makes it clear that the makers of the film clearly are not fond of him and are hell bent on making him look bad. Aamir gets introduced in expensive bikes and poor Abhishek is relegated to auto rickshaw intro. Poor guy has to make do with whats given and also has to share screen with his colleague Uday Chopra. For some reason they are sent to Chicago to catch the thief. Iam still trying to find the reason.
Abhishek comes to Chicago and challenges thief to rob the bank again on TV. Aamir comes , robs, goes away and Abhishek is neither able to protect the bank nor is able to catch the thief, as usual. What can he do if he is given a role what Iftekhar used to do as police in 70s and 80s? Police is there to stand and admire watching the thief run in slow motion. And Aamir is given a bike that is like genie in bottle. It can turn into just about anything that he wants it to be (boat, plane anything). But Abhishek manages to do one thing, hit a bullet on Aamirs shoulder while chasing him.
But later when the police try to find the mark on his body in the circus, they cant find it because that was his twin retarded brother who got hit and he is the big "secret" of the circus. This is the intermission point.
I forgot to mention about Kat but its understandable. Because that's how insignificant her role is. She comes during a song where Aamir is auditioning for a gymnast dancer for his circus. The camera is on her face whenever she speaks and suddenly goes 2 km away whenever she performs any stunt. I don't need to tell you why. This happens during all the complex gymnast moves in various scenes , songs etc. Kat disappears after this and comes only during songs. But I don't mind any of this till a point. This is a Dhoom film.
But I am not sure if its Dhoom post intermission. It becomes Taare Zameen par, Govindas Jaan Se Pyaara (1992) and many other bad old films with the retarded twin brother angle. There are so many scenes of the retarded and his brother scenes from childhood, his visits to amusement parks, songs/dream scenes with Katrina in retarded mode . This goes on and on without any point or purpose. Finally , after I think some 30 minutes later , the police decide to end this family melodrama. The showdown between Aamir and Abhishek happens with Lathis in the day and age of guns.and yes as usual, Abhishek, being this loser cop gets beaten up, Aamir is about to kill him but lets him go so that he can act in Dhoom 4.Then in the last scene, both the twins are surrounded and the police is wiling to let them live but the twins follow the footsteps of their father and commit suicide in slow motion by falling from a dam.
In the final scenes, Abhishek justifies how Aamir was right in making the bank bankrupt just because they expect repayment of loan from customer. Next time don't go and complain to some Banking Ombudsman if the bank denies you a loan. They have reasons to say –" Saale Customers, Tumhari Aisi Ki Taisi"
Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-leela (2013)
Trigger Dabane Ki Baat Mar Kar, Trigger Daba Daal
The film starts on Bhansali sets where there are lot of guns. A riot occurs between two groups of people in bhansali sets. Meanwhile Ranveer is introduced by Tattad Tattad song on another Bhansali sets. He has the facial look of Bhansali himself but the lower body is shaved like Salman of 90s. May be Bhansali always had a fetish for that kind of appearance. Then Supriya Pathak who is member of one of the groups is introduced on yet another Bhansali sets. She continues her Khichdi act from where she had left. In next scene, it is revealed that Ranvir is a porn film seller. and just after that the Slutty Savitri Deepika is introduced, this is not a co-incidence
..and yes, on yet another Bhansali set. She plays a Gujju but has accent of a vernacular Marathi.
Its Holi so a song starts and Deepika has started doing what she did in BKB, LAK, Cockail, KCK, Yjhd, Lafangey Parindey, i.e. hititng on the hero in the first mulaqat. They are about to have sex too with the underlying idea that "Mor Apne Pankh Kholte Hain, Hum Kapde Kholte Hain". But as we know by now, having watched those Deepika films, she never gives the "happy ending". So not much happens except that at least this time she didn't shy from kissing without shitting in her panties unlike BAH and YJHD. Ecstatic and erect, Ranveer falls in a pond of water created in Bhansali's sets.
Then in the next set and scene, they are talking to each other rhyming words with the standards that can compete with the lyrics of Friday by Rebecca Black. Then there's the cheesiest of all dialogues – Deepika "Jigar Pe Mat Ja, Trigger Daba Doongi". Ranveer says "Daba Na". She replies "Chee". Jab Chee Hi Bolna Tha to Trigger Dabane Ki Baat Kari Hi Kyun? Trigger Dabana Hai To Daba Daal Warna Uski Baat Mat Kar. Either be complete slutty or complete Savitri. But then its Deepika Padukone. From here on this is Ishaqzaade Part 2 in Bhansali's sets. Ishqiya Dhishkiyaon song choreography reminds of Govinda-Karishma c-graders. The Police raid scene where police guy exchanges porn DVD with bullets is WTF. Ranveer kills Deepika's brother but lust wins over family bonding and now Deepika is desperate to marry Ranver otherwise "Dono Ek Hi Kamre Mein Kaise Reh Sakte Hain". Then after some more Ishaqzaade in Bhansali sets which can be fast forwarded if you are on torrent there is an Indra the Tiger type OTT sword fight scene of Ranveer. Then some more fast forward reveals that the end scene is also same as Ishaqzaade.
Madras Cafe (2013)
Best political thriller of bollywood ever
just back from madras cafe.one of the films of the year so far. brilliant direction. i am not a fan of political thrillers but this has got to be the best in bollywood.fast paced, excellent casting, good acting and no songs.if you liked 16 December, you will love this. shoojit sircar is one of the talents to look forward to. cant believe he is the same guy who directed the lousy vicky donor
john is good. nargis is also good in her role. but the casting of the LTTE members is just brilliant.the biggest plus of the film is the direction. he has kept the movie at a very fast pace, if you don't keep up, you will lag behind.the photography and all technical details look perfect
the best thing about the direction is you know what is going to happen in the end and still you are excited to see whats gonna happen.that is the victory of the director.
Veergati (1995)
An Underrated Gem in Salmans career
I never quite understood the sheer indifference by majority of viewers to this film. its an excellent dramatic action film in the mould of Krantiveer and Agneepath with its cynical take on the societal corruption in the 90s.Smart and hard hitting dialogues.superb performances from the cast with a special mention to Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Akhilendra Mishra. But it is Salman who has the best actorly moments throughout the film. His confrontation scenes be it with his father or Villain are excellent. He gets the angry brooding persona just right. If karan arjun was a trailer , this is a full 3 hour film of that intense kickass attitude.
Commando (2013)
India's answer to Tony Jaa & Scott Adkins
Back in the 90s, in his films like KKK and Mohra, Akshay showed that Indian heroes can do the spinning back kicks and use the Nunchaku with as much ease as the Van Dammes . Vidyut takes that legacy forward and proves what Tony Jaa and Scott Adkins can do, he can do as well.
The introduction of Vidyut is nothing less than a celebration of his histrionics. This commando can do handstand pushups, one leg squats, spartan push ups with as much ease as walking in the garden. His intro fight is easily the best choreographed action sequence in Bollywood for a long time and matches the global standards of martial arts action. The ease with which he carries out his back flips, corkscrew kick, jumping through a car window and over it, vidyut makes all so-called action heroes Salman and Ajay look like school-going kids. People run on road, Vidyut runs on people!
But not everything is good about Commando. Pooja Chopra's role is quite irritating at points and she tries her best to ruin the film and is successful to some extent. But the Villain Jaideep Ahlawat makes up for her OTT acting. He is a supercool villain though personally i would have preferred a more evenly matched opponent for someone like Vidyut. The dialgues between them are good to okayish. As I always say, a good action film is one which keeps everything else simple but the action. Commando tries to take itself too seriously in the second half with some attempt at social messages which doesn't help the cause. There is an item song too and some typical filmy scenes added purely to make it look like a South Masala and that doesn't help. There are enough fight scenes for a normal movie goer but for an action lover, I believe there were less fight sequences. At least two more sequences could have been added in the second half instead of the nonsense of Pooja Chopra and the boring atrocities to her family.
I remember Aamir claiming Ghajini to push the envelope of action in Bollywood. It regressed us by 20 years and we had to face the wrath of a rather unhealthy trend of nonsensical South Masala remakes like SOS and Himmatwala. Commando is not entirely satisfying but its is a film that genuinely pushes the envelope of action in Hindi cinema. For this alone, the film deserves to be a success. My wish now is to see both Vidyut and Akshay in the same frame.
Undisputed II: Last Man Standing (2006)
Better than Undisputed 3
Great film. Excellent action. Nothing Over the top like the third part.It has even got a decent story. One can be sure of that when MJW is around. His role is as usual dominating and the only time he loses is when he is drugged .:D
Scott Adkins was the hero of third part but here he is the villain . The film showed how boxing is a limited sport in free style fight. I liked that. The climax is superb and MJW displayed some amazing Muay Thai moves . I am slowly becoming his fan :D
Another interesting thing to observe is it endorses the same TDKR's "fear as a motivation" philosophy (towards the climax) and this came way back in 2006. I had said during my TDKR review that there is nothing new in Nolans philosophy and it had been shown in many movies before. This is one among them.
There is this clichéd I have observed in all prison-based films. There will always be a creepy old bearded man who always gives some philosophical lectures and motivates the hero to get out of it. But he himself doesn't try it ever ;)
Tom yum goong (2005)
Possibly the greatest modern martial arts film ever made!
Tom Yum Goong (The Protector) is that kind of film that will make you an admirer of Tony Jaa from the word go!Its the kind of film where story is just an excuse to show off the brilliant action skills of the lead actor. It belongs to the genre of all those Bruce Lee and Chan films. Tony Jaa himself is like an updated version of both combined together.A legend in his own right. There is nothing that he doesn't seem to know - Muay Thai, Taekwondo, Kick boxing, Gymnastics, Parkour .... you name it and he has got it! The perfect fully loaded action hero.
My personal favorite scenes are one in the warehouse where he beats a gang of 20-25 people and it looks believable yet spectacular. His fight with the Capoeira fighter Lateef Crowder and finally, that bone-breaking spree scene which in my opinion,is the greatest action scene in cinema history.Highly recommended!
Blood and Bone (2009)
Good one
What i liked instantly about blood and bone is the opening scene, superb. The viewer knows what he is going to be treated to. White is good throughout. He seems to have a good technique and for his bulky figure,I think he is quite agile, though miles behind the league of a Tony Jaa or Jackie Chan. He seems far more fitter than he looked in Never Back Down 2 and the action in this is also better than that.
But the film has less fights for its kind of film. The finale fight is with Mat Mullins. He is a real life 5 time martial arts world champion. The fight was again good but short although a thrilling one.One of the jury in that scene is a real karate grand master. I have seen his videos in various documentaries.
Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012)
The Death of "Raj"
Through the film ,its said hero is the "man who never dies". But I think the "Raj" of romance is dead in this film.He is killed by the same people who once created it.The Raj who was known to be the Ram of romance. But the Raj here is not someone who used to "respect" women or was a family man. He is a sugar daddy and is 20 years too old to do what he been doing in the film. After 20 years in cinema,he may be hated for his romantic roles but at least they had dignity. This is cheap. There are scenes ( the whole sans song especially)where it looked like just another cheap film.
If at all there is a "story" ,then its laughably bad.he seems to have some curse that he will meet with an accident whenever he is horny Lola! His memory is like a recycle bin. you can retrieve any data as and when you want it. I don't want to give more spoilers, watch the film if you can for more funny scenes . All roles are poorly written and all 3 of the actors are in awful form. Katrina is terribly exposed in this film.SK has sleepwalked through the film. Anushka was below average but her role is just of a sidekick. The army angle is ridiculous and a pure gimmick to give it some mas ala. SK said in some interview that this will popularize army? Hahahahahahahahahah
There is only one scene in the climax, a small SK monologue where i saw glimpses of him that we knew.
The film is never ending. The first half is so long that at least thrice I had decided to walk out in the film. My friend wanted to me walk out just after interval ROFL.I told him wait till the climax. I want to know if SK dies or not.
and finally ,let me categorically state this – This is their WORST film in career without any qualification.and this is not an exaggeration by any means. watch the film for yourself and read this again.
Undisputed III: Redemption (2010)
A wannabe over the top action
cant say i am very impressed with undisputed 3.it is like those 100s of badly directed Hollywood MMA action films. Now we know in such films , acting is not really a prerequisite but even by those std, there was some serious bad acting and silly dialogs throughout the film. The climax is super-cheesy .I really cringed at that moment where there is a bad animation shown for a fracture of the villains leg. wont recommend this film!
The Chinese ,korean and Thailand's are still the best in action genre.Hollywood will continue to be a wannabe just like MMA is a wannabe Muay Thai.
Student of the Year (2012)
SOTY is India's Own High School Musical
After MNIK, everyone thought KJo is going to go the Subhash Ghai way but we were wrong. The guy went to his basics and for the first time made a film without trying to be someone else or to please any pseudo intellectual. The film is unofficially India's own version of High School Musical.A world kjo is most familiar with and an arena of which he is a master. There is no manipulation,no unnecessary emotions.None of the actors are trying to impress anyone or even take themselves very seriously which really made the film watchable for me.
I will go to the extent of saying this is Kjos most honest work till date.In KKHH,k3G he tried to be Yash chopra/barjatya.In MNIK he wanted to become the next mani or rakesh mehra.IN SOTY ,he is just Kjo!
