Call Me by Your Name (2017)
I don't get it...
If this is a movie about how lovely the Italian countryside can be in summer then I totally bought it. It looks super nice.
However if this is a movie about two people beeing in love I don't see it. There is zero chemistry between the two main characters, heck there was even more emotions on display with that peach than with the other guy. The only scene that felt genuine was the kid crying at the end.
Maybe you need to know the source material to understand what's going on?
Still I'll give it a medium rating for the nice scenery.
Secret in Their Eyes (2015)
I liked it.
I'm doing a week of old Julia Roberts movies when I stumbled across this. I never even heard about it before. Imdb score aside I still gave it a go.
I found it to be excellent. The story is far from the usual bland Hollywood productions and the acting from Chiwetel, Nicole and Julia are just excellent. Julias raw emotional scene early on makes this worth a watch just by itself.
Can't see why it has a measly 6,3 score on here.
Its definitely not an action cop movie but more of an emotional crime drama focusing on the relationships between people and how to find conclusion after experiencing some dramatic events 13 years back.
(haven't seen the original so I won't do any comparisons)
:)
-excellent acting.
-not a too obvious storyline.
:(
-I found some of the "douchebag cop" and "bad guy" characters to be a bit cliché.
Black Panther (2018)
Not one of Marvels best
I think people confuse their excitement for an all "black cast" and a story taking place in Africa, for a quality movie.
I found this one very mediocre compared to other Marvel movies. Perhaps my expectations was a bit high considering the hype from reviewers across the pond.
:)
-Some talented actors.
-Some interesting world building.
-Can never be too much Angela Bassett in any movie.
:(
-The storyline isn't very original.
-The FX are right out laughable, those 3D rhinos had me laughing out loud and the fighting scenes at the end was not up to standards (rubbery and weightless game style 3D from the 90s).
-The magic tech used in the movie was way too advanced, being able to make anything out of thin air is just too convenient and makes your hero and story unexciting.
Just got a general meeeeh feeling about it all. There are other better superhero movies out there...or "black cast" movies if thats what you are looking for.
Love, Simon (2018)
No, that doesn't seem right
Sickeningly sweet Hollywood assembly line money grabbing garbage, with an approach to its gay-theme that feels 30 years out of date. Come on, get with the times already.
Its baffling to see that this lack of quality is getting such high ratings, we live in weird times indeed.
Best: Simon's dream sequences.
Worst: Everything else pretty much. Lack of originality.
Don't bother with this one. If you want something gay-themed with some genuin heart to it try something like: Weekend, The way he looks, God's own country, Boys, Moonlight to name a few.
Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)
Juvenile to the max
May contain spoilers!
Although the setup of the movie was promising as a gentleman spy theme, the execution is a sub-par movie experience. There is nothing in this movie that hasn't already been seen elsewhere, time and time again.
No surprises nor innovation what so ever. Only clichés. Nothing in this production feels fresh and/or interesting unfortunately.
A stale, old-fashioned, testosterone infused, sexist, juvenile glorification of violence. Yaaaawn! Pretty cringe-worthy.
Although 13 year old pubescent boys are probably the aimed target for this, so I won't be surprised if this film will work just fine at the cinemas.
Plot line: Kid with poor background excels against all odds (and posh breed competition) in training to be a secret agent. When sh*t hits the fan, obviously everyone else fails or dies and the guy gets to be the hero and save the world from a rich, evil "madman".
Ping Pong Summer (2014)
This one is an unexpected beauty
I liked the looks of this one already in the trailer, deliciously quirky. I was pleasantly surprised when the movie itself turned out to be even better than I had imagined. This movie is a low-key, comical comment on the innocence of the 80s and the classic 80s movies. Everything is so beautifully dorky its insane. They pretty much got it all in there - the music, the clothes, the family summer vacation experience, finding new friends, finding first love and standing up to the bully (in this case with a ping pong competition).
I guess its hard to appreciate all the effort if you never experienced the real deal. This probably works best as a charmingly silly nostalgia trip for us old-timers.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)
Yes the rumors are true - This isn't very good.
When Guillermo del Toro was out of The Hobbit and Peter Jackson was back in, I was a bit disappointed to say the least. Guillermo is a fantastic visual artist if nothing else and would probably have given us something beautiful and unexpected. Well at least PJ has done this before - I thought - and if he can avoid repeating the things I felt least satisfying from The lord of the rings movies (cringeworthy action sequences aimed for 15 years old boys to put in the trailer and painfully dragged out camera roller coasters in caves or landscapes where nothing of interest to the story happens) this would be an OK representation of The Hobbit.
Unfortunately since there really isn't story enough in The Hobbit for three whole movies of this magnitude, PJ had to fill them with a lot of fluff (yes you guessed it - cringeworthy action sequences aimed for 15 years old boys to put in the trailer and painfully dragged out camera roller coasters in caves or landscapes where nothing of interest to the story happens). And instead of actually elaborating on the scenes that occur in the book he prefers to cut most of these as short as possible to fit totally irrelevant junk in there. Also there is a significant mood change from the book in order to make The Hobbit more into a Lord of the rings duplicate.
The second installment in The Hobbit trilogy gives you pretty much the same of what was started in the first movie, only more so. There is less of events from the actual book and more of irrelevant side stories this time around. Total lack of character development during the film and the main character Bilbo is basically just a parenthesis throughout. It feels very much like a regular studio production to make money instead of any attempt to make a work of art.
This isn't really worth going to the cinemas for and it has left me totally indifferent for the final movie.
:) Best part of the movie: Well made props and some beautiful sets.
:( Worst part of the movie: It has few relations to the actual book. Big waste of opportunity.
Olympus Has Fallen (2013)
Be warned!
I really need to warn people about this stinking pile of a movie. It's just a cheap replica of movies like Die Hard, In the line of fire and Airforce One mashed up into a sad uninteresting mess. Some scenes are so closely "inspired" by these other films, it almost feels like they made a spoof movie. This generic Hollywood waste is an insult to every other movie ever made. Please don't waste your time or money on it.
I wish there was a way I could vote lower than one on this, but that doesn't seem to be supported.
On the plus side though - it's always nice to see Angela Bassett and Morgan Freeman.
Prometheus (2012)
Flat but beautiful
It does not deliver what was anticipated, that's for sure. Beautiful visuals guaranteed, but with a quite flat story.
The idea of creating a new movie franchise within the universe of the classic Alien movies is genius. With Ridley directing, it certainly had all the potential of something amazing. Although wanting to create something new, rarely works when following the exact same old formula as all the other Alien movies (and every other copycat B alien movie since). For a movie that wanted to DISTANCE itself from the "Alien prequel" stigma, it doesn't do a very good job.
The audience was laughing at the dramatic/horrific scenes because it felt too forced, and very obvious. Squid-babies and phallus-snakes might not have been the best of choices unfortunately.
Still, it's worth watching as long as you don't expect something in the level with the classic Alien movie.
Worst irritation: Why spend millions of dollars on creating beautiful visuals for the movie, but not bother with making a old man makeup that looks credible (or actually hiring an old guy to do the job)?
