No Sudden Move (2021)
Could they have paid for a second lens?
The narrative is kind of interesting, although over-scripted. Are we allowed to have a simple through line without all the convolutions these days?
But my big question is about the wide angle lens. It seems like every single scene uses the same weird aspherical effect. I get it every now and then to amp up the paranoid feel, but every single shot? They couldn't afford a real DP?
Considering it was shot on digital RED, is it even a wide angle lens or just the wide angle digital effect filter applied after the fact? I think Mr. Soderbergh needs to consider the idea that his audience has both eyes and a brain, working at the same time.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
If 0 stars were an option, I would have gone there
Everyone involved with this production should go hide away somewhere. Outside of the soccer game opening set piece, there's just nothing here. The family dynamics are maudlin and predictable. This is basically Starship Troopers - plus extravagantly limited time travel, and less a brain and heart.
Tenet (2020)
What a waste of time...
Apparently a studio, investors, and a production company put up $200 million for this. What a waste of time and money for something that is nothing more than a puffed up shoot'em up. Couldn't we give 10 filmmakers with new ideas $20M to make interesting pictures instead? If Nolan wants to direct a James Bond picture, why not just go do it and leave out all the goofy time-travel nonsense. I'm so happy I didn't bother going to a theater for this waste of time. And it would have been better with about an hour cut out of it. 90 minutes of people shooting each other is enough, already.
