The West Wing (1999)
Would be a 10 but it tailed off towards the end.
Great writing, great cast (mostly), brilliantly filmed.
Smart, witty, thought provoking. The first 5 seasons covered some brilliant topics with the long stories being intertwined with daily crises and issues. It got to the point where they need to drag things out to complete a season and add pointless characters like Annabeth who add nothing to stories or scenes but strangely get lots of attention....
Explained (2018)
Very hit and miss
Some episodes are really well researched and informative. There are some that make you want to understand the topic more and happily research it further. However, others are a very biased monologue with a very specific ideological narrative that doesn't give the 360 view that something that is explaining a topic should give.
Explained: Flags (2021)
Not really about flags
Wasn't about flags. It was about how people symbolise flags in very specific ways to match an argument they were trying to get across. Glossed over about why flags occurred and then went on to how flags are adopted/hijacked for 'evil purposes'.
Teach me about the subject and don't make it ideological or political.
Explained: Royalty (2021)
1 sided and anti royal. Missed the premise.
Unlike other episodes I didn't learn anything. It was 30 minutes of going Windsors, racism, Windsor's, racism, Windsor's, slavery. Dare I say it seemed like propaganda in support for the removal of monarchies and not the fact driven, balanced, informative episode as expected. Only other monarchy really referenced was Japan but nothing about the existing absolute Monarchies or talked about any of the other Monarchs involved in slavery such as Belgium. Poor research and very narrow minded.
Silk Road: Drugs, Death and the Dark Web (2017)
Barely scratched the surface
I have listened to podcasts and read books on this subject matter and the documentary misses out so much. It also seemed a documentary solely based on showing that Ross is innocent as opposed to giving the viewer the option to make their own mind by offering evidence.
I blame Carol Baskin.
