The Three Musketeers (2011)
Not the Best Adaption But Loved It :)
Honestly, this was not the best adaption of The Three Musketeers, but I personally enjoyed it a lot, despite it being in a different language and not understanding half of it. One of the reasons why is because the movie was very entertaining and the second reason is because I prefer not to compare both the movie and the books together since no movie is perfect when it comes to adapting it from a book, the only one that came pretty close was The Three Musketeers' 1970s version.
I did not really mind the airships because Anderson did say in an article that he decided to use one of Da Vinci's war machines in the movie, and I just interpreted the airships as Buckingham just trying to find a way to defeat the nation of France. I did not mind it either when Milady bungee jumped from the roof practically half naked because, honestly, who would want to be bungee jumping in that kind of dress? Sure, it's a lot easier to fight in the dress, but do you really think it's going to be a whole lot easier trying to bungee jump and doing all those jumps and leaps up on the roof and in Queen Anne's room? Though the Milady in the actual book would probably never do anything like that, I did not mind it in the least because I believe if Milady is capable of murder, then she is capable of everything else. The movie was a bit humorous and all action, the plot seemed to go by too quickly in my opinion, but I just think the movie is good for entertainment.
There was a lot of references to the book, though. Like for instance, Buckingham's "letters" to Queen Anne, the stealing of the Queen's diamonds, Athos and Milady's relationship-despite the complete differences between the book and this movie-, the affair between Milady and Buckingham, and finally England going to war with France. I won't go into full details of the book, you just have to read the book yourself but there are a lot of differences between them, but still some references to it.
Some of the characters were a little off character, like Buckingham since in the book he wasn't really a bad guy, just a love-sick puppy, but I think (from the German version of the movie) that Orlando Bloom did not do so bad; in fact, he really made it seem plausible for him to play the role of the bad guy. Both Orlando and Milla really gave me chills, though, the sexuality between Milady and Buckingham really drew me into the story more because, just like the Milady in the book, the Milady in this movie was not your average go-to-church-and-stay-pure kinda 17th century woman. I believe Milady in both the book and the movies make the story more interesting because without her there would be no adventures. Although, I will agree with one review, there was too much attention on Buckingham and Milady and not enough on D'Artagnan, which is basically what the whole story is about: D'Artagnan. I also found it a little weird of how Milady was able to survive the fall from the airship, I do not find it plausible for a person to be able to survive after jumping 4000 (or higher, I suck with numbers) and landing in the water, but the movie is just meant for entertainment so I really do not care. I really hope that the next movie, though, will pay a little more attention to D'Artagnan (AND not to kill off Orlando! 'Cause I'll be so mad if Anderson did!)
If you are one of those people who really expects this to be the perfect adaption, do not expect too much because no adaption is perfect and this is just one of those movies where you can just go watch a movie (say a Disney movie) and just escape from reality, that's what it is.
The Wonderful World of Disney: Princess of Thieves (2001)
One of the First Horrible Adaptions of Robin Hood I've Ever Seen
The only reason why I watched this throughout the whole thing was because of Kierra Knightly because, out of all the other actors and actresses, Kierra Knightly was the only one that seemed to do a very decent job. It was not one of her best works, but she still somehow made it seem very believable just like any other movie I have seen with her in it, but everybody else just made it look like a bunch of animal crap that people just step into by accident and get disgusted with it after you stepped into it :P.
There was not enough dialogue between Gwyn and Prince Phillip for there to be any kind of relationship whatsoever, there was no spark between them! I do not understand why Disney has to make the main girl character go with someone who is rich and handsome all because he is a prince. It's like they just HAVE to put the girl with a prince when there is was not enough dialouge and not enough spark between them! If anything, Gwyn should have been with Froderick because I could feel the spark between them more than with Gwyn and Prince Phillip because Froderick seemed to be more of the better man and more of Gwyn's type: brave, intelligent, and protective while, on the other hand, this was Prince Phillip's character: naive, cowardly, spoiled, and idiotic.
Kierra Knightly's character had a slight development where in that one scene where her father and Will get captured, and Gwyn realizes how stupid it was to have followed her father, but she remained strong to get her father and Will back just so she could save the kingdom. Everybody else, not so much. Prince Phillip's character development, though, changed so quickly that you probably would not have the time to figure out why he decided to be so brave all of a sudden! And both Prince John and Sheriff of Nottingham are not bad guys, in my opinion, they seem more like spoiled little princes just trying to get what they want when their mommies won't let them have what they want.
Here's one question, though, before I am to close this review: Exactly how in the hell is Prince Phillip, a prince of France, the son of King Richard, a king of England? Did he screw a French princess while he was there? If he did, that would have brought disgrace and shame to his name, and not to mention, the princess and the baby would have their titles revoked and been sent into exile! If Disney thinks that the King and Queen would have shown sympathy for their daughter all because she "loved" King Richard, they might as well think again! Gosh, Disney, how stupid can you get?!?!?!?! Why don't you look back in the history book, so that you can actually make these things more historically accurate!
If you want a good, historical accurate movie, don't watch this! If you also want a very good and entertaining movie, don't watch this, not even for your kids! I would not even let my kids watch this piece of crap!
The Three Musketeers (1993)
Worse Version of The Three Musketeers
I got one word for this movie: Stupid! Just flat out, plain stupid!
Overall, this was a very entertaining and it had the moments, but I have to say it was one of the worst versions of The Three Musketeers ever and I hope this latest version of The Three Musketeers is better. The plot in this movie did not follow the original plot and there was not enough dialogue between some very important characters from the book. Yes, this movie is meant for entertaining the kids and family, and I will admit there were a couple of times where I laughed at it, but that was mostly because of how stupid and inaccurate the screen writer made the movie.
The whole plot is where the Cardinal, who is portrayed as an evil, merciless man, dismisses the musketeers as the king's bodyguards so the musketeers wouldn't be in the way of his evil plan to become king and in comes D'Artagnan who is just itching to be a musketeer like his father finds out about the Cardinal's plot so he and the three musketeers have to go and stop the evil plot. D'Artagnan is a naive and hot-headed little boy and perhaps a bit stupid; Athos is a brave drunk; Aramis is a humble, religious man yet a seducer(?); and Porthos is an arrogant womanizer and a pirate?!?!?! Where exactly did the pirate come from? When D'Artagnan found out Porthos was a pirate, he was actually AMAZED by it! Amazed by it? If D'Artagnan ever first found this out in the first place, he would not even step a foot near Porthos again! Did Disney even know back then that if you were found out to be a pirate or associating yourself with a pirate, you would be hanged?!?!?!?!?! Obviously not! They just think that everything they do in this movie is possible, even with a pirate being able to be a musketeer, not to mention a religious man such as Aramis being a seducer!
And where exactly did the ninja come from? This takes place in the 17th century in France, so how exactly does the ninja fit in this movie? If this was a ninja or samurai version of The Three Musketeers, then maybe I would find the ninja believable, but since this is NOT a ninja or samurai version of The Three Musketeers, then I would have to say that Disney did a pretty poor job at creating this movie!
The movie was entertaining, but just stupid. Do yourselves and your kids a favor, don't have them watch this horrible crap because it just gives them the wrong idea on the actual historic figures and facts.
