The Facts in the Case of Mister Hollow (2008)
Amazing!
I saw this tonight, during Nuit Blanche in Montreal at the Fantasia/DJ XL5 show at Place des Arts, and it just blew me away. I wanted to find it on YouTube, or even for sale, but no such luck. Now I want all of my film-fanatic friends to see it.
I very much enjoyed the way it was shot, and the general feel of it all. The music was just plain awesome, and really worked well with the general aesthetic.
Hopefully it will be made available in some way or another in the near future, as I'd love to watch it again.
And congrats on the Genie nomination!
The Messengers (2007)
Piece of Garbage
This must be one of the worst horror movies I've seen in years. The so-called 'creepy' effects are lifted (and laughably modified) from Ju-On/The Grudge, the plot is a mix of The Others, The Shining and Ju-On, and the movie has nothing scary about it; it only had those stupid 'jump' scenes - the telltale sign of a very weak horror film. And yes, the trailer lets you see everything of value in the whole movie. Which amounts to f$%&-all.
Are there no good horror movies out there? Is there nothing genuinely scary? This movie contributes nothing to the horror film industry - it capitalises on the success of other horror movies while adding zilch in terms of novel ideas, imagery, etc.
All I can say for sure right now is that The Messengers was complete trash and between this and The Eye, I hope the Pang brothers never make another movie again.
The Bodyguard (2004)
Absolutely hysterical
I was lucky enough to see this movie at a film festival, and had been looking for it since. Petchtai Wongkamlao---Dirty Balls from Ong-Bak, though he was originally a stand-up comedian---is hysterical as Wongkom, and I was laughing throughout the entire film at his random antics. Most of the cast from Ong Bak was in this movie (Tony Jaa even makes a brief appearance in a supermarket), but the two have nothing else in common, despite the fact that Tony Jaa refers to Wong Kom (the bodyguard) as Humleih (Dirty Balls) only to be told "Wrong movie!" With a nod to every action movie out there, it's one of the best parodies ever, and I'd say it's one of the top Asian movies I have ever seen!
