Die Geschichte vom weinenden Kamel (2003)
What a surprise!
If anyone had ever told me that a movie about nomadic shepherds in Mongolia and a couple of camels could hold my interest and feelings the way this movie did I would have suggested they see a shrink.
It can only be described as a wonderful story that makes the most complex of Hollywood screen-plays look silly.
Great for all generations.
Mambo Italiano (2003)
Go before dinner
If you plan to see this one, go before, not after, dinner. You'll laugh so hard that you might lose anything you've eaten. It also helps if you're an Italian-American (or Italian-Canadian) male...but it's not absolutely necessary to be one to enjoy it.
What is wonderful about this picture is that, although it stereotypes Italians and gays, it does so without ridiculing them. It just makes them human and funny!
It's one of the few movies I've seen in the last few years that I've given a "10".
Lost in Translation (2003)
What did I miss?
It looks like I am one of the oddballs that could not figure out the point of this movie. The reviews were so good that we couldn't wait to plunk down our cash for this highly hyped event. The only hype I could possibly come up with after seeing it is that it would make for a good non-narcotic sleeping pill. I kept waiting for the loud music to end and the plot to begin. Well, the music ended (eventually) but I couldn't find the beginning of the plot unless it is "boy meets girl, boy has drinks with girl and has platonic relationship, boy says 'goodby' to girl."
Great acting on the part of Bill Murray but, overall, I rated it a 4 out of 10.
Matchstick Men (2003)
Not quite "The Sting" but a close second.
Even though this movie is, perhaps, 20 minutes longer than it has to be, it is still worth the time and money! Nicholas Cage is at his best and his supporting cast is magnificent. The story line is somewhere between "The Sting" and "Paper Moon"...I loved them both. This one has to go on a "must see" list.
The Secret Lives of Dentists (2002)
What a waste!
This film represented a waste to the time and pocketbook of anyone, like myself, who was dumb enough to listen to one of the local critics and go to see it.
Unless you enjoy screaming kids, lots of vomit, irrational behavior, and a plot that seems like the author didn't quite understand, run, don't walk as far away from the theater showing it as possible.
