This movie continues to impress more and more upon subsequent viewing.
The first time the wife and I watched Blast From The Past we thought it was a hoot and quite funny. We are now up to our 4th viewing in the past couple of years and BFTP continues to grow on us. It is quirky, cute and innocent with subtle layers of humour underlying the more obvious comedic moments and these layers pop up again and again throughout the movie for even more laughs.
The non-typical casting is near perfect with Christopher Walken and Sissy Spacek revealing a sense of comedic timing that we've rarely had a chance to see from them before. Not surprising given their history of scream movies such as Carrie or The Dead Zone.
All in all this movie written by Hugh Wilson (who created my favourite TV comedy of all-time, WKRP in Cincinnati) shows us once again that he has the innate ability to wring humour out of seemingly mundane moments and belly-aching laughs out the craziest scenarios while never allowing the the audience to lose its connection with the unintended wackiness of the characters.
If continuous laughs throughout an entire movie are the true indicator of the quality of a comedy then Blast From The Past is one of the funniest movies to come out in the past 20 years. If you've seen it before check it out again as the true genius of this movie can't be seen entirely the first time.
Two thumbs up for a real comedic classic!!!
