Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014)
Sorry, Ridley
I went to the movie pretty much because there was nothing else on in the local cinema so my expectations were nor too high or low. I simply went to "go and see". The first part (up to the moment when Moses returns to deliver his people from Egypt) was too long, quite annoying to my taste. The second part was a great mash-up of effects and epic sceneries but none of that can make up for the fact that all the characters felt somewhat estranged to the viewer. None of the the actors made me feel compassion nor excitement. In conclusion, all I could think of was: thank god, we have The Prince of Egypt. Despite being animated and perhaps having simplified the biblical story, this interpretation of Moses' story managed to deliver a wave of emotions and deep impressions. Unlike Exodus. Dear, Hollywood, special effects won't save you every time.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)
Fabulous but...
I'm not keen on writing vast texts so I'll make it simple. + Powerful storytelling - I didn't understand how I got through three hours without actually looking on my watch. Beautiful setting - NZ rocks. + Smaug was wonderful in terms of character and visual design. The whole Bilbo and Smaug scene if incredibly fun to watch and enjoy. + Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield - again fan-tas-tic! Same goes for Sir McKellen and Mr. Freeman. Bravo! Now for the less joyful part. I didn't quite get the whole Tauriel, Legolas addition but I didn't mind. - I was a little tired of watching extended fight scenes - don't get me wrong I love action but it was overly stretched . there's so much stuff in the book that could have been extended in exchange for Hollywoodish action scenes. - Also some of the scenes felt like too expanded and on the other some scenes I really enjoyed seemed short. But that's of course personal notion for the most part. :)
At the end of the day it was a splendid experience and it was good to be back to Middle-Earth again.:)
Veronica's Closet (1997)
Why so serious?
I don't understand how it gets such bad reviews sometimes. I know it's been some time since it was on air. Especially here in Czech republic. I was about 12 or 14, I don't remember shows from abroad used to get here pretty late, and I can't say I didn't love the show. I used to record it on a tape and we would watch it with my older sister eagerly. And I don't remember me not laughing every episode. i admit that in the third season it wasn't as funny and as energetic as the first season but still I wouldn't say it's even remotely bad. Sitcoms are usually getting very predictable after few season because the characters can't live on variations of their peculiar gags forever and there are only few sitcoms that kept somewhat medium quality. However, nobody can take Veronica's closet away from me. It's a hilarious show that can take you through a rainy day.
