War of the Worlds (2005)
I was very worried about the performance of Tom Cruise
I was very worried about the performance of Tom Cruise and at first thought Tom Hanks would be a better choice. Also because a pretty face can destroy a particular character. But I must admit that Tom Cruise is a great actor though I still would prefer a more "observer" kinda actor like Sam Neill or John Hurt in sucha role. Sam Neill the best actor you can find around in my opinion. One of the only actors who can make you forget his face cause he really is the character and not a kind of "copy of".
But CHAPO; Tom Cruise.
Spielberg did the greatest job by following the original The War of the Worlds novel which, don't forget was already written in 1898! What I mist was the third person observing from the outside. The voice in the beginning is a little mistake from Spielberg. That should be the voice of Tom Cruise which would ad up to the character as more "observing" and less "undergoing" like it did in the movie.
What is so amazing about the book is that it still is able to touch the hart which again proves the genius of H.G. Wells. They didn't have laser-technology in 1898, think about that!
People who played the game Half_Life surely recognize these tripods. Actually they where greatly inspired by H.G.Wells War of the World machines. Myself couldn't think of anything else when playing this part of the game, really huge.
The special effects in this movie are really really great and that always has been Spielberg's major quality. He must have a great eye for those talents in the business no doubt about it.
Still wondering about why the have chosen a different film size not 2:1 folks? I liked this unusual, kinda old need fashioned film size. Did you notice how the higher ISO from the used celluloid added up to the special effect scenes?
And remember; "Orson Welles' Mercury Theater radio broadcast, based on The War of the Worlds, caused a panic in the Eastern United States on October 30, 1938. In Newark, New Jersey, all the occupants of a block of flats left their homes with wet towels round their heads and in Harlem a congregation fell to its knees. Welles, who first considered the show silly, was shaken by the panic he had unleashed and promised that he would never do anything like it again. Later Welles attempted to claim authorship for the script, but it was written by Howard Koch, whose inside story of the whole episode, The panic broadcast; portrait of an event, appeared in 1970."
Blueberry (2004)
Very nice Indian-Cowboy " Karma " film
I've read all the series of the Blueberry cartoons in fact I still have the whole series on my bookshelf. I first was disappointed with the fact that this Blueberry character doesn't look any near the Blueberry Cartoon figure. But the spirit of the cartoons can be found back in this movie. I think they did a better job trying to catch some of the Cartoon spirit rather than trying to copy the original Cartoons which is very difficult anyway because even in cartoons you still have that personal touch of fantasy which always gets destroyed by making a movie of some Novel or in this case, Cartoon. Very nice to see a more "Holistic" approach towards the "Cowboy-Indian" theme. It's a good thing to realize that this native Americans had a much more healthier attitude to nature than we do and we should learn from them now we know that we already destroyed some of it. When I think about American Indians I also have that holistic feeling about them so for me this Movie adds up to that. See the movie yourself when you are in a chill mood and you will certainly appreciate it.
P.S. Nice to finally know how Tsi Nah-Pha (Broken Nose)is pronounced.

Finding Nemo (2003)
New move is a "good one" !
The Disney's produce films like they are making hamburgers (Disney works with McDonald's I believe). The cartoon work is being Industrialized and the old "soul" of the handwork is gone. In the past it took them at almost 1 1/2 year to make a movie with a lot of employees involved. Now the "Managers" have taken over the business, which is a threat to world peace anyway. The new move they make is a "good one ". Computer animated " 3D models which maybe gives a little bit back from what the have lost, their "soul" and in reality this means hopefully, less unbearable flat computer cartoon work in the future.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Surprisingly enjoyable and entertaining at the same time.
Enspiring performances from various actors with a funny highlight in the eccentric flamboyant character of ` Captain ` Jack Sparrow played by Johnny Depp who got inspired by the soul of Rock & Roll guitar playing Keith Richards. The acting performance of Jhonny was done with a lot of depth & Soul.
Johnny Depp could be the new star on the stardom gallery sealing
Gangs of New York (2002)
Does this movie revere an Oscar ? Well lets history decide about that.
Oh gosh, how hard they tried to make it an Epic Oscar Winning Movie A pity they didn't put some Hip Hop to underlining some scenes, it would make it a lot easier to understand this movie in his historical context. Let History decide about that, don't we old chaps!
