Argylle (2024)
Terribly awesome
Ignore the critics - for a good time, watch this movie.
Yes, the story is overly complicated and meandering. And, yes, some of the special effects are basic.
But YES to this ensemble cast and the great chemistry between Rockwell and Howard.
YES to all things KITTY!
YES to über-fun action/fighting scenes that are impeccably choreographed, all the while being simultaneously ludicrous.
YES to an empowering story where the women save the day- repeatedly. And, when they're evil, they're deliciously so.
YES to a really solid showing from the supporting cast.
YES to so many plot twists that the viewer is at risk of serious whiplash.
YES to the masters O'Hara, Jackson and Cranston.
There are so many reasons to just sit back and relax into a couple of hours of feel good entertainment. And try not to overthink it, will ya? Nobody wants to be a hater.
The Neighborhood (2018)
Heartwarming
Yes, there are a number of weak points to this show, especially in some of the acting, generalizations, etc. But I find this show very heartwarming. Tichina Arnold is brilliant, and Cedric the Entertainer is awesome. I actually get a kick out of experiencing the growing pains of their relationship with the new neighbours.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
It's an adjustment, but it's very good
Let's be clear, here - every Trek series has taken its own angle on the Star Trek universe. When DS9 first came out, the uproar from "purists" and "pundits" about a stationary space "ship" was hilarious to follow.
However, the true mission of Star Trek is, and always has been, to present an optimistic view of the future where "people" of all creeds and races (and species) worked together for the betterment of "humanity." The platform for this mission was a show tgat involved a crew jetting off on exciting adventures - yet always making the viewer ponder a bit about the philosophy of life.
Think what you will about the acting, technology/CGI, writing, etc - Star Trek Discovery delivers on this mission in spades.
I personally love it, have grown to love the characters and their relationship. Michelle Yeoh makes my heart sing every time she is on screen. Sonequa Martin Green was perfectly cast in the lead role. And gorgeous Ethan Peck is a great addition to Season 2.
Don't listen to the haters - revel in this series!
Celeste in the City (2004)
Oof
I don't know if I can think of a worse movie - from, literally, every angle (writing, plot, acting, music, cinematography). Waste of 120 minutes.
