Catastrophe (2015)
I'm in awe of this series
Just finished Catastrophe. Binged the entire four seasons in about four or five days. Some tears but mostly just an overwhelming sense of awe...
Awe that Rob and Sharon created and wrote and acted all four seasons. Acted like real people. Wrote real life stories. Made my world a better place. Lots of fun. Lots of sex. Beautiful.
For those delicate souls out there who want to live in some contrived fanciful world where you don't have sex, don't fart, or take a dump, or masturbate, or god forbid talk about such stuff, this is NOT for you.
But I think you can see from the ratings that this is a very much loved show about love and sex and farts and ugliness and so much beauty.
I will come back and watch it again. Guaranteed.
Moonfall (2022)
Honestly people! It's fantasy Sci-Fi. Get a grip.
The negative reviews just astound me. The movie was excellent in all categories. What kind of nit-picking idiots are gonna give it a low rating just because it wasn't "logical" or that it didn't fit your idea of what a sci-fi movie should be. I understand the concept "suspend disbelief," doesn't anyone else? I'd hate for people to miss a really good movie just because of a lower rating. I'm one of those that reads reviews and consider them before watching a movie, but in this case I'm glad I didn't listen to the nay-sayers. Again, excellent in every category directing, acting, sound, effects, cinematography, and especially the writing. Great concept and I loved it.

Awkward...
Awkward. Strange word but perfect description of everything about this film. Is this universe of people really all that hard to understand and relate to? Just not sure how to describe. Kinda like the word awkward is strange to spell and say. That's how this movie is. Tries really hard to be artsy, but I found it so boring that I started playing solitaire on my phone halfway through. Not well written or acted. I felt embarrassed form most of the actors. None of them got to behave like normal people. Embarrassed - another hard to spell and describe word but fits this film perfectly.
Uncoupled (2022)
I'm embarrassed and ashamed by this
The lead here is that NO ONE should be proud of the way people (gay, straight or whatever) are portrayed in this shallow excuse for entertainment. Did the gay community gain new allies after seeing this show? Or did we lose some?
I am 67, gay and have travelled the country and overseas some. I have never been rich and while I was quite risquΓ© for a good chunk of my early life (teens to 20s), I am just shocked and saddened that NPH felt it necessary to shove his posterior in mine and everyone else's faces. I mean, really? Gross. Way beyond the pale, which is exactly how I would describe NPH.
I have never been a NPH fan and never watched any of his shows, but they do all seem to me to come down as portraying him as intelligent and attractive, which I don't find either to be true. I don't think he's a very good actor and I don't want to see his nether region get pricked with a needle full of Botox so that he can help his dad's outrageously hung dermatologist destroy the Hippocratic oath he took.
A friend who also watched it, said he thought NPH seems awfully proud of his body like its something everyone would want to see. Miss. It certainly seems he was out to make a different type of and ended up with this hot mess.
It was embarrassing to see gay men portrayed these ways. Maybe it represents a tiny fraction of the gay population, but after living in Denver for 15+ years and Chicago 2+ years, I am now settled back in my hometown in the deep red Texas panhandle where I don't know ANY gay men who are going to kiss in public. Sad, but true. Maybe this movie could have portrayed real men, in real places that would better represent the gay community.
I do believe that we need shows that help extend the knowledge and awareness of gay communities around the world, but this just shattered boundaries and destroyed concepts that many in my community would consider desirable. We are not the people in this film and I don't know any that would want to be.
And don't get me wrong, I am no prude. But that's why there is the internet.
The whole gallery art show was a travesty. And again, don't misunderstand me, I own several pieces of similar art. Love it. But again, is it necessary or desirable to shove it in everyone's faces. Is that really doing a good service for the gay community as a whole? Sheesh.
I rarely rate any show as low as this one, but I am ashamed and disturbed. Another missed opportunity to share the real lives of real men that I call my community. Shame on Neil Patrick Harris. But I have to believe that he has risen so far past his roots that he can no longer see them.
Score: A Hockey Musical (2010)
What a gem and I'm not even Canadian!
Watched this after discovering Noah Reid via Outer Range on Prime Video and researched what else he was known for. Then went back to Schitt's Creek which I had watched the first episode and half of the second before giving up on it and moving on to other things. Noah was the impetus for me starting SC again, but skipping to S3E8 where Noah first appears. Now I've watched SC twice all the way through and am blown away with how good it is. And Noah's arrangement and performance of Tina Turner's Simply The Best was awe inspiring. He also sings in Outer Range which is really what prompted me to find out more about him and it lead me to SC. Then, more research and finding two albums of his music and third about to drop kept me looking for more Noah. Watched a few episodes of Black Hell High which he was in as a teenager and then more research, which is what brought me here to Score. And it's hilarious. Truly inspired! Who in their right mind would ever think to make a musical about hockey? Had to be a Canadian. And again, Noah sings! There is nothing dull or boring or embarrassing about this movie as other reviewers have suggested. Bull hockey! It's meant as pure entertainment and boy was I surprised by how entertaining it was. Delicious! Hockey players singing? Doing dance routines on ice?!?! And I don't even like hockey. Take it all with a grain of salt and a grin. Loved it! Now if I can just find the rest of his films...
A Happening of Monumental Proportions (2017)
Why! What a waste...
One look at the cast and it's just amazing that all these people agreed to do this monumentally stupid film. They must have REALLY been hurting for work during the pandemic? Dunno. I RARELY write reviews but this one was such a waste of time, waste of talent, waste, waste, waste...
Other People (2016)
Real life is messy
Didn't know what to expect and I've now read some reviews that were pretty harsh, but I have to say I was moved - enough to write a review.
This movie was just real. It was messy. Messed up. Life is like that and so is death. None of it comes in neatly tied up bundles of perfection. Flaws and all make this movie a warm embrace. Embrace life - flaws and all. Embrace death - flaws and all. We would all be much happier if we didn't all have such high expectations. Be okay with imperfections and be happy.
Minyan (2020)
NOT my story, but my story still
An exceptional, moving performance all the way around. Every aspect exuded excellence yet this is a film that isn't for everyone. Deep dive into an ethnic that most of us only very slightly know and even fewer understand without being one of them. It's one of those rare glimpses into the unknown and still one can never thoroughly understand unless it is YOUR story.
I can not imagine y'all watching it. Painfully slow but so exacting in every detail. Beautiful in the extreme when it explores things you are familiar with, but mystifying in the unknown pieces of those lives and loves.
And the soundtrack featuring clarinetist David Krakauer takes you on a wild ride to heaven and back. Just took my breath away...
Gerontophilia (2013)
Cute boy, BAD acting.
Just no real acting skills among the whole lot of them. The ONLY redeeming quality was how beautiful the young man is. But from the first kiss, I was turned off. PLEASE, could someone PLEASE give these people lessons in how to kiss??? There is nothing more weenie wilting than kissing someone who has no idea how to do it. Just gross. And the whole revolutionary theme is sad. Directing is a total mishegoss. The motel bed scene is bad. Did he pull that used condom out of his ass? No intimacy from start to finish. So I guess giving it a three is being generous. I started at four. And silly queens trying to do a bar fight was as silly as they come. No. Just no. So bad. I will say the artist doing the sketches was quite good. Only lovely thing in the movie. Most of the soundtrack was not familiar but on target. Maybe a little too on target to the point of grinding it right in your face.
Cinderella (2021)
Oh, please! It's entertainment!! Get over yourselves!
Just can't understand the sucky reviews. Lighthearted, fun and entertaining! Not the best. But far better than the miserable reviews it's getting. Pacific Heights was much better, but Annette is the one that deserves horrible reviews. Just garbage. So quit dumping on this poor man's joy and get a life...
Solos (2021)
A bit hit or miss...
A few stories were okay, none great, and some just so so. Certainly no lack of talent, I think most of them tried to develop a story in too short a time. Lots of similar series with much better stories. Try Room 104.
Supernova (2020)
What a disappointment...
Let me start by saying I am a 66-year-old gay man. I really had hoped for a great film with two stars I totally adore, but, but, but...
The movie industry has a crush of old people with dementia scripts that are somewhat tedious and without depth. This is typical of that schlock. Love the actors, but at no time did I believe them. No depth at all to their characters. Just surface baloney. Sad.
The locations were great. Some of it was even filmed at a nice level. But if I want beautiful English countryside there are much better films.
Maybe it was the lack of depth to the characters that was the big disappointment, but I also suspect that portraying this as a "gay" film left a stale taste. Just so tired of sad "gay" movies where there is no happy ending. This is just another one of those. And maybe because it could leave some feeling like it's just another "sad gay" film is frustrating.
Sorry. I hated it.
Bo Burnham: Inside (2021)
Jesus complex social commentary in underwear & songπ
A masterpiece. I just watched In The Heights last night and now this tonight and both just blew me away - first because I had no idea they would be mostly opera with little spoken word, and secondly because they fulfill the desperate need we SHOULD ALL HAVE for deep introspection and consideration of our state in the world. Messed up.
He is Jesus and I am an apostle. He speaks truth to the masses and feeds us all from the boundless loaves of that come out of that oven that keeps blinking, begging for someone to set the time. Sheesh. That alone would make me crazy.
Sexting. White woman Instagram. Dick in his hand. The lyrics, no matter the topic, are piercing, revealing, exposing. And talk about exposing. He likes showing himself in some nice underwear modeling - maybe he has a future in that too. The tunes are incredible. The voice is worth gold and silver and jewels.
Just blown away by the mind, the voice, and the body of Bo sweet Jesus Burnham. Thank you dude. π
Freaks - Du bist eine von uns (2020)
A little uneven, but not horrible.
The worst parts are the men in black. Looks super cheesy having men with guns who look like they belong in a much worse movie.
Prospect (2018)
A solid sci-fi adventure
I'm with the half of viewers who found this to be good stuff. Solid writing, acting, directing, everything. An unexpected pleasure which I just happened upon while looking for something to watch on a Saturday night. Found it under their Hidden Gems category and it truly was.
The Endless (2017)
Blown away
I've had this movie on a watchlist for many months and finally decided to watch it. Extremely blown away. It takes a while to develop and many might get bored at first. But well worth the effort.
I put this right up there with all my favorite time travel movies - The Time Traveler's Wife, About Time, Source Code, Arrival, 12 Monkeys, Looper, FAQ About Time Travel (mostly because it's just fun).
Totally unexpected and without any big name stars, but it pulls it off with just the right mix of everything, acting, writing, directing, special effects, and imagination.
Totally worth a watch.
About Time (2013)
Second time
Came back for a second viewing and expect I'll see it a few more times. Just goes to prove the thesis of the movie - that time is the most precious thing we have and we need to use it the best way we can. Seeing it again and again couldn't be more precious.
Groupers (2019)
Fun and inventive
I hate gay movies that have so much misery so it's refreshing to have one that takes that abuse and shoves right back at 'em! Funny and kept getting weirder and weirder. Loved it. My dick got hard for sure.
Fireball: Visitors from Darker Worlds (2020)
Really hoped for something more...
Just a rambling montage of bits of information that never seem to have a distinct direction or point. Random. Really disappointing. Was expecting so much more. A solid through line with a cohesive vision, but no, not what this is. It's a mess of a documentary by one of the most renowned documentarians of all time. Sad.
Skeletons (2010)
What an AMAZING little film...
Happened upon this gem as I was doing the Saturday night scroll through countless streaming services looking for just the right movie to watch and something about it just screamed "watch me!" So glad I did.
Every aspect is just top notch. Screenplay, direction, acting, score, locations, etc, etc, etc.
I found it to be just the right mix of oddity and joy to make me feel good about the skeletons in my closet.
Being a dumb American (even worse - a Texan) I was somewhat dependent on closed captions to help me through some of the heavy accents, but WELL worth it for such a delightful film.
Love, Guaranteed (2020)
Tortured script, disappointing lead actress
Just sorry I spent an hour and a half watching. Should have read the reviews first.
Real Steel (2011)
Drivel.
Painful to watch really excellent talent do such poorly written drivel. A lot of forced acting and bad directing. Hey, but Hugh is always a pleasure to see and he puts it on full display.
Jexi (2019)
Made me laugh a lot!
A comedy that actually worked. While I'm not a fan of Adam Devine, he was a perfect fit for the role. Only question I have is: was the dick pic actually his??? π
Very light and entertaining. Short but sweet.
The Vast of Night (2019)
Two changes would have made this much better
I was very, very distracted by two things from the very start:
First were the eyeglasses worn by the main characters. Extremely exaggerated modern takes of what should have been period props that could have been used instead at a minimum cost. Silly that such a small thing could have made such a huge impact for me, but the movie tried hard to be a period piece and they just ruined the whole experience. Which is crazy, because the film was successful in almost all other matters concerning trying to be of a certain period - cars, the gymnasium, street fronts, etc all worked really well but those damn eyeglass frames were just outlandish and a stupid error. In that same vein, they showed some dummy pic of a huge City Library, which was totally out of place for a town of a few hundred people. Just stupid minor errors that made it hard to buy into the period.
Secondly, this is a tiny town in New Mexico deep in the southwest. If I'd not had signs telling me that, I would have sworn it was taking place in New Jersey. Not ONE of the actors talked like someone in the Southwest. They were all fast talking Eastern seaboard actors who sped through the dialogue at such a clip that I'm glad I had subtitles on so I could understand what was being said. I mean they talked FAST and with either New Jersey or maybe Long Island area accents. Again, totally spoiled the ability to buy into the story.
And I'm one who is easy to sell a story to and it was a very good first effort for possibly the entire cast and crew, but if you want people to suspend disbelief and buy into the movie, you can't have MINOR errors in props and speech totally spoil the effort.
I had read some glowing reviews, but was really disappointed by the amateurish mistakes. With just those minor tweaks corrected, it could have been a much better movie.
But the story itself WAS an original take and a good one. Which is why I still gave it seven stars, even with the flaws I've mentioned.
Tales from the Loop (2020)
Slow, sad, melancholy
Can't imagine this being a hit series. Besides the sad, slow melancholy portrayed in every second, it's also just disturbing. A bleak picture of an alternate universe with almost no smiles, no laughter, no happiness. Sheesh. Who would want to inhabit that? While extremely well done in most respects - acting, directing, scenery, props, sets, robots, etc - the essential missing element is life. Everyone is acting in a dead space, devoid of excitement. Dark and forbidding, without exception. Sad.
