23 Walks (2020)
Ignore the IMDB score - wonderful real-life love story
More than once have I almost passed on a film because of its low imdb score, just to then be pleasantly surprised. This is such an example - loved the authentic, gentle love story as well as the fantastic performances! A real gem and anyone who has lived a little and knows life and love tends to be complicated will recognize this and appreciate it just as much. Such a shame that trashy rom coms and bloody action block busters consistantly tend to score 8* and higher on this site while anything more subtle doesn't receive the acknowledgement deserved. Will not rely on Imdb score anymore in future when deciding on a film to watch.
77 Minutes (2016)
Director is a disgrace
I did not finish watching this thanks to the unbearable directing style of Charlie Minn. While I'm a big fan of real crime documentaries, this cannot be called a serious documentary in any shape of form. As other's have already mentioned, the director inserts himself in bizarre ways, pushes and keeps pushing his agenda of blaming the police in a very confrontotive manner, explores in no way what led up to the shooting and instead keeps showing over and over and over and over again the very explicit crime scene footage. He is like a vulture and this is in no way journalism, he is just exploiting the graphic scenes by zooming in continuously on all of these poor murdered souls. While a documentary about this shocking crime warranted showing the some graphic images at one point, there is absolutely no reaon for doing so over and over again throughout the documentary. He's obvioulsy only after gratuitous graphic images. Shame on you.
Believe Me: The Abduction of Lisa McVey (2018)
Powerful story let down by awful screen play and acting!!!!
Without a doubt is Lisa McVey a true hero and the kind of strength and resilience she displayed is awe inspiring. That's why her story deserved a great screen play, high calibre director and amazing actors.... None of this is being delivered here. In fact the acting and directing is so incredibly bad, it feels cheap and almost like an amateur production at times. All these 10* reviews here seem to rate the actual life story of Lisa McVey (which indeed deserves 10* for heroism) instead of rating the actual film!!! Otherwise I can't fathom why anyone would describe this car crash of a production as "masterpiece"..
What They Had (2018)
Wonderful little gem
Looking at the average score on IMDB I almost didn't want each and what a loss it would have had. Simply describing this as a film about how a family is dealing with a loved one alzheimer illness is to simplistic and doesn't nearly do it justice. It's about so much more painful family relations, old hurts, loneliness, regrets, a life half lived, missed chances, the kind of love I think we all would aspire to and so much more. The script and director do a wonderful job in dealing with some pretty heavy subjects quite tenderly. I was genuinly touched by this movie and yes, shed some tears and I think anyone who has experienced loss and some painful live experiences will do so to. Do not miss!
Downton Abbey (2010)
Good Season 1, disappointing & overrated Season 2
I bought Downton Abbey on DVD because of all the rave reviews and I really enjoyed the first season. Not only because I love period drama in general, but because I thought this particular period drama succeeded very well in creating a rich atmosphere of the pre-WW1 period. I really got into into and I can't say I was bored any second of the first season. As a result I also bought the second season, but boy what a disappointment it has been. Somehow it unfortunately descended into soap-opera territory. The constant emotional dramas are completely exaggerated and started really grating on my nerves mid-second season. I also have to agree with the criticism of some of the other reviewers who found the characters one-dimensional. They are so black and white, I now regret ever buying the second season and am thinking of returning the still unopened special Christmas edition. I'm just really at a point I find some characters unwatchable. Oh and although some of the acting is really very good, I have no clue why Elizabeth McGovern got the role! Her portrayal of Lady Cora is so limited it seems her repertoire only includes two facial expressions, large eyes and raised eyebrows. Will not be tuning in to watch season 3, that's for sure!
Black Swan (2010)
Have I watched the wrong movie???@>?~?
I couldn't wait to see Black Swan, given all the rave reviews.....and I could hardly sit through it when I finally did.... Seriously, what film has everyone been watching? How can anyone consider this film a masterpiece and how can it end up with a score of 8+ on IMDb? This film is about as subtle as a sledge hammer, it's trying very hard to be deep and psychological, but it's basically just pretentious. Dramatic music at every corner is setting the tone and Ms Portmans pain stricken face in constant close ups....just in case the audience doesn't get it, yes indeed, this is supposed to be a very disturbing film. I wish it was! Then at least I would have felt anything at all. Instead, the way the story was told the characters left me completely cold. Don't get me wrong, I love great movies, an intelligent script and more than anything I appreciate a film that gets under my skin and touches me emotionally. This film so doesn't. Actually it left me so indifferent, I can't even be bothered to put much effort into this review.
