Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story (2023)
So much better than I expected it to be
Usually when you think of spinoffs, you don't think they'll be better than the originals. I wanted it to last longer than the 6 episodes it runs for.
It's more mature than the original two Bridgerton seasons, and deals with more complex issues with greater sensitivity. It's timeless love rather than romance. Still with all the opulence of the Bridgerton series, and even more opulent since it's the royal family.
The cast is great. Young Charlotte, King George, the Dowager Princess... Everyone really. If you like period shows and want something a little deeper than Bridgerton Seasons 1 & 2, this is a must watch.
Wedding Season (2022)
Terrible accents and acting
When they hire people who don't have the accent naturally and try to put on an exaggerated accent, it is very jarring to me as an Indian. The girl's mother and the boy's father have terrible fake accents. And the girl's acting is beyond terrible. Exaggerated, cocky and very annoying. I couldn't stand this film. Hard pass.
The Batman (2022)
Trying too hard but failing
No great writing, acting or cast. Tries to behave like it's an epic film, but it's very basic. Action scenes are mediocre. Just filming the movie with low lighting doesn't make it "dark." Pattinson tries to copy Christian Bale's voice but is lacklustre otherwise. Nobody stands out.
The Leftovers (2014)
Don't believe the 10 star reviews
This is below average storytelling. It had potential but got nowhere close to meeting it. It doesn't know where it wanted to go and just drags on and on. It isn't as deep as the 10 star reviewers would have you believe. Quite basic intellectually. Everyone is miserable, and there is nothing to look forward to. No suspense, no resolution, no purpose even.
The Undoing (2020)
Terribly overrated show
Lazy writing, with things that don't make sense. Bad acting from Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant. Extremely awful end and very very lazy cop outs.
Saving graces are the small roles Donald Sutherland, the kid and the lawyer have, which they do well. Good initial court room scenes which become stupid suddenly too.
Big no from me.
Bridgerton (2020)
Lock your brain before watching
Initially when I watched it, the main onscreen couple's chemistry will carry it through. But, a large part of it is intolerable. It is a dumbed down, rom-com, unrealistic representation of society. But then, if you want to show a utopian lie instead of being true to the period, why not extend that beyond race to also show independent women or less class difference?
And what's with the toxic relationship at the heart of this story, full of lies and deception?
If you watch period shows, don't expect this to join the ranks of those. It is a soap opera that cheapens the genre, sells sex and doesn't show any depth in characters. Watch it in place of a rom-com and you may enjoy it.
When Calls the Heart (2014)
Disappointed
When it started I thought it had great promise. I think my issue is that I love other British and Canadian period shows, and was expecting the same level of writing, intellect and quality. Sorry, but it's a really dumb show. Forget the million "creative liberties" in using language that belongs in 2017, talking about things that didn't even exist then, makeup and clothes that are ridiculous (especially Mountie Jack's contemporary clothes) etc. It's even the fact that nothing captures the spirit of the time, the romance is cookie cutter kisses that end in a second with no real emotion, there is no real feeling on display anywhere. I could go on. 5 stars only for attempting a period drama, but nothing else. What a waste of my time. If you are a lover of good, intelligent period drama, skip this. If you haven't watch any British or Canadian ones, sure.
Iron Fist (2017)
Worst Netflix show and superhero series ever
Don't believe a word of the positive reviews. You will waste your time. Worst script and story, main actor's posture is like a banana peel whereas he's supposed to be a trained warrior and let's not even talk about the most nondescript and useless action scenes. Each scene will leave you wondering how stupid things can get. We watched it for lack of anything better being released on Netflix, and this is really as C-grade as it gets. Was a middle school student writing the script?
At least a show like Marco Polo had great secondary actors and a shock and awe script with great sets. This has none of those. Please save your time for something better.
Waar (2013)
Silly propaganda story and amateurish
I can't believe this movie is being given such high ratings. Besides contemporary filming and visual effects (please note - not great, but just trying to keep up with the times), it has a silly and irresponsible storyline and plot. A few of us were watching, and after an hour, we couldn't tolerate it any more.
With clichés, bad stilted acting and propaganda that tries to push terrorism blame outside Pakistan, we were all rolling our eyes after a while.
Very amateur in story, acting and script. One of the only movies in my life I've stopped halfway.
Downton Abbey (2010)
Starts with a bang, and then fizzles over the seasons
The first few episodes were very interesting, but it slowly started to do downhill (especially after the 2nd season). Too many stories and characters, scenes ending too quickly - all recipes for not being able to connect with the characters. I actually find the Dowager Countess and Isabel Crawley the most entertaining and consistent characters. Edith could become one, but never gets the importance she deserves.
One of the mainstays of the first three seasons, the Mary and Matthew romance, fizzles after their marriage, with perfunctory "I love you" lines. They don't actually show the bond but give lip service to it - a lot like the rest of the series. The only consistently great thing is the production and period charm. The two people who do justice to their roles are already mentioned (dowager and Isabel). Cora grown on you too. Rest are average actors. By the end of the 3rd season I decided not to watch it any longer. Too soap opera with substandard acting (albeit great costumes and locales) for my liking.
