Chaos Walking (2021)

Subtle wokeness and slightly enjoyable

The usual claptrap from Hollywood of late that straight men are bad and everybody else is ok.

At least it didn't push too far this agenda and had an interesting premise to the film.

Decently enough executed albeit predictable story, worth a one-time watch if you're a sci-fi fan.

Would watch a sequel if made.

Decent action adventure that doesn't do anything new. You've seen it all before kind of film.

Well made, just a bit bland.

Average and Bland

Reincarnation is real.

Some people use it to their advantage others are tired of reincarnating.

Supervillain wants to kill all life so he can't reincarnate ever again.

Some decent bits in the movie, the rest is just bland.

Shame really because the.

Classic action sci-fi

Take a little aliens 2, starship troopers and the time travel aspect of terminator and this is what you end up baking.

And it tastes delicious.

Great film for this genre.

The Fighter (I) (2010)

Not Rocky, it has it's own style instead
7 January 2011
Just finished watching this film and i enjoyed it so much that i thought i would write a review.

This film is based on the true story of the real Mickey Ward and his brother Dicky Ecklund. I am not going to spoil the plot, but it is basically a boxing film about the life of Micky and his brother.

Mark Wahlberg plays a phenomenal role in this film, but the true shine is Christian Bale.

Think about the dynamics of Johnny Depp, but the heart of American hero Sylvestor Stallone wrapped up in drug fuelled paper bag, and you have the remarkable work of Christian Bale. In fact he plays such a great role that you completely forget he is the current face of Bruce Wayne and John Connor. It's like he is a different guy altogether.

This film is not Rocky, but that is good, it doesn't try to be and it doesn't need to be. This is the story of a true fighter, played by actors who obviously have taken the time to really feel the real life events of who they are playing and portray it in film.

Great movie.

Stone (2010)

Unclear moral to the Story
7 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Well after watching this film, i was left a bit confused really. Half of me was saying "there is something meaningful in this story" and the other half of me was saying "this story sucks, it had no relevant meaning to......anything".

The film starts with Robert De Niro's character threatening his wife to kill their daughter if she leaves him. Then it immediately fast forwards 20-30 years with his wife and him together meaning that his threat worked and she stayed with him.

Enter Stone (aka Edward Norton). Stone wants to get out of prison. He was convicted of aiding murder by burning his grandparents house (and his dead grandparents).

De Niro works in the jail house as an "approval of release" guy. Basically if he thinks someone has been rehabilitated, then he writes his report to his superiors and they decide whether or not to release someone.

Stone and De Niro get talking and Stone desperately wants to get out of prison, so he sends his wife to De Niro. She basically seduces De Niro and he ultimately writes the approval.

In the mean time, Stone keeps talking with De Niro, and he finds a religion that basically makes his desperation go away. Somewhere along the lines, the tables turn, Stone is freed, and De Niro is now having a bad time with his life.

The result is that he loses nearly everything, his wife hates him and he has no job and no friends.

Now this is the point of the story i don't think made any impact at all. You have a hard working guy who works all his life that made a mistake with his wife (and his daughter). Then you have a convicted criminal who burnt his grandparents and spent time in jail.

By the end of the film, it seems like you are made to want to like Stone and want to hate De Niro.

I get it. I really do. I get what they were trying to do with the film - Two people did two separately morally wrong acts. One of them was sent to jail, the other spent his life working.

I just don't see the point of trying to make the convicted criminal out to be the good guy, and the hard worker out to be the bad guy. Pointless. It just didn't work.

De Niro and Norton gave very good performances, as did the rest of the actors and actresses, but the plot of the film just sucked. Big time. It barely made it clear what the point of the film was, and the point it was trying to make just wasn't.......right.

Skyline (2010)

Not as bad as many say
7 January 2011
I was quite surprised when i saw this movie. The usual "aliens have invaded" plot applies to this film and it starts with the also usual "we are having a good time until......" scenario, until things start to develop.

I guess making a comparison to Independence Day is inevitable, and i will be the first to say that Independence Day is generally a better film as well.

This film does take a twist however, because it is not your usual "humans win at the end of the film" kind of film either. Sure the ending was possibly a bit unrealistic, but hey, we are talking about a whole genre of film that could be considered unrealistic too.

The acting was quite OK in my opinion, not cheesy, just generally showing what people would do in a "this is really happening?" situation.

Some of the "YEAAAA!" moments were not unrealistic as in many other movies i have seen. You won't see little 13 year old Billy suddenly flying a jet plane and leaping 50 foot across a gap to make it to the other side. This is a good thing, because those moments in films i do class as cheesy.

I would say this is not a fantastic film, but it is not a bad film either. And i would class it as a mix between War of the Worlds, and Independence Day. It's not quite as good as either of these films, but it's worth watching. Once.
