Cold Brook (2018)

Refreshingly satisfying.
9 November 2019
In the case of COLD BROOK, home is where we find our peace, and the proverbial "heart" dwells at home, in nature, and among friends. At least, that's the message I got from this precious gem of a film.

When two co-workers discover a lost soul, it is in helping the stranger that they unearth their rooted humanity, despite dire consequences.

Scenes of a tentative marriage are revealed, but when the stakes become searingly present at a do-or-die moment, trust and united strength prevail.

Some sympathy is evoked for the antagonist, a security guard who takes his job a bit too seriously (think wannabe cop) over his actual duties of keeping "do not touch" and visitor closing times, per art museum rules and regulations. When his albeit imagined authority is of no consideration, after an actual violation occurs, I couldn't help but think, "aww, poor thing."

The direction is clear, the actors are exquisite, and the photography is idyllic; above all, the story engagingly unfolds without beating us over the head with a lot of flash and noise.

Campy horror fun
16 January 2019
Not to be taken seriously, folks! Johnny Gruesome will crack you up in this campy teen horror romp. With a tongue in cheek nod to "scary" acting, special film effects, and props, you'll fall in love with this homage to B-movie teenage angst horror genre. Based on a the novel of the same title by Gregory Lamberson, Johnny Gruesome reminds us of cheesy high school faculty, friends, and affairs that need to die -- with humor and popcorn.

A movie with real and fine actors
29 October 2014
NO SPOILER HERE: This movie is a gem for movie-goers who appreciate fine Indie offerings. A bonus treat for fans of science history and detective stories. What a great modern-take American Side is on the classic detective films! Creators Greg Stuhr and Jenna Ricker tell a compelling Nikola Tesla-inspired plot. Being from Buffalo, I especially enjoy Buffalo, NY and Niagara Falls locations. If you enjoy actors with real skills, you will love this! I look forward to its full tour of great press and Golden Globe award! It stars performers with serious theatre actor chops Greg Sturh, Matthew Broderick, Robert Forster, Janeane Garofalo, Robert Vaughn, and Stephen McKinley Henderson.
