Desi Boyz (2011)
Disappointed
I honestly love comedy, even starting to appreciate the less subtle blend, but Desi Boyz? Sorry just didn't work. I mean it did have a great idea with a relevant theme that a lot of people would identify with, but here's the problem, Desi Boyz? Never lives up to it.
The plot (where the bulk of the problems lie) was, by far, the worst thing about the movie. The plot can be summed up through the following words: broken, confusing, irrelevant, uninformed, and poorly written. There were several questions raised in the movie that were never answered or even dealt with for that matter. Like, there was this theme of "Recession" which apparently had something to do with the characters, but it was never explained where (or what) these characters were to begin with.
The comedy consistently misses the mark by a huge margin. This movie was intended to be a comedy although it's shockingly unfunny despite an almost foolproof set of comic circumstances and actors. It tries to be funny and thoughtful and ends up being incredibly and offensively stupid and trite.
If there are any redeeming qualities it is the performances of John Abraham and Akshay Kumar who put a lot of effort into their characters. By all means it was lovely to see the "Garam Masala" pair again but sadly they doesn't have much to work with.
Ra.One (2011)
The Next Step
One of the biggest criticisms of Bollywood these days is the lack of doing anything new or risky. How many remakes of films do we have to muddle through before they start doing something new and unique? For now I guess the wait is over.
Ra.One has been the most promoted film of the year and to be honest the fresh idea of it is what brought a couple of friends and me to watch it last night, and we left feeling very satisfied. The plot requires some suspension of disbelief but probably that is what entertainment is about. If people want more "believable" movies they need to watch national geographic documentaries. If they want to get entertained and want an entertaining experience of what would something look like if it was real then look no further then Ra.One. It's highly engaging and the concept is 'unique' if nothing else.
The cast is about as developed as can be expected. The real star of the film is Armaan Verma who does a pretty decent job and is one of 'the best' acting by a child actor in any movie that I have seen so far, simply brilliant.
Visually Ra.One is a feast, but the problem seems to lie within the way it's written and the screenplay. But nevertheless the special effects are the main attraction and the way programs disintegrate when they're disposed of, some of the airborne chases in addition to the many fight sequences in the film are just a small example of the dazzling display of some of the most exceptional and impressive special effects ever seen in a Bollywood cinematic feature.
To summarize, how you like Ra.One is based on you. While the writing of the film isn't quite as polished as the special effects, there certainly seems to be a good enough balance to keep the film afloat and deliver an extremely entertaining way to kill few hours.
Rascals (2011)
So ridiculously bad
Im still not sure how I ended up seeing this movie, but here I am thinking of the film that stands next to Double Dhamaal as the worst of 2011. Seriously, it is that bad. Reasons? For One, there is hardly a plot, but old, cliché gimmicks to create a Partner feel in two Rascals story. Two? The cast themselves. Now we already know how Kangana has modeled herself on some western woeful pictures from day one, but Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgan is in way over their head. And worse still, someone like Arjun Rampal turns in for a very poor cameo. Lastly? Does it work? No. It does not. I don't care if people write reviews stating that a lot of reviewers won't admit they liked the picture. I absolutely hated it.
I just want to say this has to be one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The character Kangana played, talks pure crap. Every word coming out of her mouth just seems to make me angry, because it sounds like she is trying really hard to sound cool and smart. She just unloads so much non-sense that it make watching the film torture.
Force (2011)
repulsive force
Contrite, clichéd, awful.. Same old "Once Upon a time there was a security personnel" theme.. The cast seemed to be an interesting mix of talent and has-been.. John was Good, Genelia below average but the débutant Vidyut Jamwal was Outstanding ..The only good thing about this movie is probably the stunts ..It was clean but then again at times monotonous.
Anyway, in summary, don't think that it's so bad it'll be entertaining, because it isn't (if you want something like that, try 'Dumb Maaro Dumb')It's horrific to the point of disbelief, whilst remaining incredibly dull throughout.
Tees Maar Khan (2010)
it was Ohh ...so bad!!!!!!
After waiting eagerly for this movie, I sat in the theater and then was extremely eager for it to End because this movie was atrocious and that's putting it politely. There is nothing good about this movie and I can bet I've seen better plots and characters with more depth in blue movies. Right from the plot to the visuals, the acting, the directing it was simply contrite, clichéd and awful. There was absolutely no dramatic scene at all and the visual effects were just creepy and over the top.
Farah Khan once said that she doesn't care a damn for what the critics opine! Well you got to believe the critics this time because the only good thing I can say about Tees Mar Khan is Katrina's performance in 'sheela ki jawani' but the question is, are you that desperate for an eye-candy?
Farah Khan please for the love and beauty of a Bollywood movie never make a movie like this ever again.
