Melancholia (2011)
For those who would enjoy
First of all, Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg's acting is superb, especially during the last half.
Some call Melancholia 'slow' and a 'bore', specifically Part One. This is clearly not the type of movie they would enjoy. As for you, consider a film in which characters who have been completely fleshed out (off screen, mind you) interact with one another. With a few of them comes baggage and unresolved issues. Part One is an exploration of human interaction--the kind that remains behind closed doors--while Part Two is an journey into people's reactions to sudden events as well as their handling of them. Does this sound like something you would enjoy? If not, carry on. Melancholia has enough negative reviews as it is.
Under the Skin (2013)
Great movie light on dialogue and hand-fed explanations
Under the Skin not for everyone and is similar to 2001: A Space Odyssey in the way the story is told. This is not an action movie, sexy movie, romantic movie, or a chick-flick. Sit down, get comfortable, and watch the story play out.
What entertained me the most was the main character's interactions with others, as well as herself, and how unpredictable the movie is. I only saw two events coming, and that was after it had already happened the first time.
The entire movie itself is basically an experience that the viewer shares with the main character as she, and you, develop. Enjoy the ride.
Enigma (2009)
Quick, Simple, and Enjoyable
For a forty-three minute film, this is very well paced. There is only a single scene where some viewers might say "Get to the action already." Fortunately, this scene is short and used for necessary character (and ship) development.
Speaking of scenes, there's a fight scene that was nice to watch if not slightly crowbarred in (Wait, what? Oh, it's a fight scene), and props to everyone involved for doing a jump scare that I failed to see coming.
Right off the bat, this appears to be a low budget movie with actors who will be much better with two more years of experience. Upon accepting this, I found the movie very enjoyable and having a rabbit hole of a story that has the most important and interesting parts carefully revealed during the last ten minutes.
I would like to see Enigma's universe expanded upon with novels or comics someday. There's clearly something there that is only hinted at during the movie. Anyone who enjoys analyzing stories will definitely like the ending, not that it's vague. It just presents something unexpected and interesting without wasting fifteen minutes thoroughly explaining it.
I can hear my mother now asking me to explain what the ending meant. If you're that type of person, I would recommend watching this with someone who doesn't mind explaining endings to you. Not to say that it's complicated, though. Some people--my mother included--might walk away with a few questions burning their brain.
Vampire Diary (2006)
Found Footage With an Interesting Take on Vampires
Vampire Diary is a great movie considering what it is--the story of a group of 'weekend vampires' and a woman with a habit of recording everything who meet a female vampire by pure chance. Prepare for an unexpected love quadrangle, some interesting lore on vampires, and great use of found footage.
My only complaint lies in a scene towards the end during which one of the weekend vampires' lines were corny (writing) and poorly delivered (acting, directing).
One thing I especially like about Vampire Diary is that the first thirty minutes make a wonderful short story. I almost wished it ended at the water scene simply because of how great the movie was by that point. So, there you go. Give the first thirty minutes a shot. If you find yourself caring about the characters or interested in seeing what happens next, continue on for the remaining hour.
Would You Rather (2012)
What Would You Do?
Would You Rather is a great suspenseful movie that reveals two human qualities: self-preservation and greed.
It also asks viewers two distinct questions: "How far would you go for money?" and "Would you harm someone else to avoid suffering pain yourself?"
The movie revolves around a game that everyone has a stake in, but only one will win. The internal problem for the contestants is whether or not the money is worth what they must do to gain it.
My only complaint about the movie is the mediocre camera angles that were used during certain scenes. I do give props for the zoom-in that was used during the 'hand' scene, though. Very well done.
This is the type of movie that people sit down and observe. In the end, you will ask yourself "Was it worth it?".
