Baldur's Gate III (2023)
Over 70 hours in and still obsessed
I can't get enough. I'm playing on PC, an old Haswell i7, but plenty of ram and a 1080ti GPU, so far running very well. No crashes, no major glitches (an odd one with speech options just giving me "continue" which then result as if something significant was said but that's only happened twice so I'm unsure what's what there).
The characters are well written, the plot is gripping and the world is interesting to explore. I have always been a huge BioWare fangirl, but honestly, Larian have completely blown away my previous faves; they really are the studio for epic CRPGs now. The voice acting is also 10/10.
It's a very well crafted game all around and knowing how Larian were with DOS:II it'll hopefully receive ongoing support and tweaks to make things better.
The Open House (2018)
Started strong, failed to land
The acting was good. I don't want to say the writing was bad as I don't know the intention of the writer so I'll explain why it didn't land for me rather than declaring "bad."
It started strong, could have been a classic, but:
-It was set up to make you naturally try to guess who the intruder is or what it's related to
-it introduced characters and bits of backstory to make you further speculate
-characters acted wildly daft given the situation they were in, a lack of self preservation I've never seen in horror and that's saying something
-it never took a supernatural element to make you think oh ok maybe it's just a random haunting thing
-it never gave any indication it was just some random slasher
Then leaves you with no explanation and no answers.
I really wish this could get an alternate ending cut which would easily take it to a 9 or 10 star.
Great job by the actors and crew, but for me the writing for the ending just didn't do it at all.
