A true great, if it had just chosen an audience!

First things first. DO NOT SHOW THIS MOVIE TO VERY YOUNG CHILDREN!! This is a very dark and often scary animation. I would recommend it as an 8 years and up movie, minimum!

And this is also this movies biggest problem. It just didn't pick a target market. It is neither cuddly enough for kids or smart enough for adults. Many reviewers have said how they were confused by the plot or that there didn't seem to be a reason for anything??? I found the opposite, this movie is very straight-forward, a little too so maybe. It is a simple tale of good versus evil in a post apocalyptic, alternative earth. (I fear the suits holding the money may have had something to do with the "dumbing down" of the story however and not the writers).

All this being said, it is beautiful to look at, with some fantastic set pieces and atmosphere and despite it's simple story, it is a sweet tale. The voice acting is solid (special mention goes to John C Riley for his ever-so-sweet portrayal of "5") and the action scenes are tense and well thought out. As I said earlier, the monsters in this really are quite creepy, even by grown-up standards, add to that the post-war setting and occasional images of (albeit CG) dead bodies/death and this really puts this movie out of the young kids film bracket.

"9" could have been so much more. In my opinion, it would have worked better as a grown-up animation with a slightly meatier script and the peril ramped up a little. As it is, it sits somewhat uncomfortably in limbo between kids and grown-ups, fully satisfying neither. Now, your thinking, "he gave this 7/10 and all he has done is complain!" well, it is a good movie and I did enjoy it a lot. It is haunting, thought provoking and beautifully animated and would have scored a 10/10 if it had just been written more towards older viewers.

A fantastic idea, lovingly animated. could have been a classic if it had just been a little braver in the writing phase.

Alice in Wonderland (I) (2010)

Edward Scissorhands part 25?
16 July 2010
Actually it isn't, Scissorhands was original at least! It was a long time ago that I tired of Burton's "style", but at least in the past his movies had a good pace and interesting story despite being visual carbon copies of his earlier successes.

Alice in wonderland is a prime example of Burton relying on his tried and tested money making formula, "well if it ain't broke, don't fix it", right? Well Tim, it is broke! This movie never takes off, it merely lumbers along at yawn inducing pace. The characters, sorry, people who appear on screen (there is nobody with character in this movie) are either boring, shallow or just plain strange and not the good Tim Burton kind of strange, the "what the hell was that!!" kind of strange! I direct you in particular to Depp's bizarre Scottish freak outs. By the end of the movie you don't really care who won or lost the final battle (battle being a term I use loosely) you just imagine Tim Burton raking his hands through YOUR money laughing hysterically. I actually can't think of particular sections of this movie to mock, purely because it was so bland, nothing stuck in my mind.

The visuals, while mildly interesting, feel underdeveloped and we really have seen it all before. Mainly in Burtons other films. Which brings me neatly to the soundtrack, yes, you guessed it Danny Elfman, AGAIN! The score could easily be mistaken for any of Elfman's previous soundtracks and doesn't fit the movie well at all, it really makes you wonder why Burton continues to give this guy work???

Being a fan of the original story and Tim Burton's early work, I really wanted to like this movie. It seemed the perfect adaptation for Burton. A chance to put his gloomy spin on a story that always needed a dark and twisted edge. Unfortunately it feels like all involved just sleepwalked their way through it. I honestly can't think of a redeeming feature in this movie. A very boring and poorly put together adaptation.

Nothing but flak
22 June 2010
This movie gets a lot of flak and yes it is silly, nonsense even, but you have to remember this is an 80's style "screwball" black comedy. If you were expecting deep story lines and involved, fully developed characters then you clearly didn't read the title let alone the back of the box! And another thing about this movie....comedy is not entirely the word that best describes it. 'Nothing but trouble' is pretty damn scary when you really think about! The whole family are psychopathic, the setting is like a twisted fairground from hell and the sense of isolation is actually quite uncomfortable. As for the ending, and maybe this is just me, but I think this has one of the creepiest endings of a film from it's time. The end is far scarier than most of the laughable "horrors" from the late 80's early 90's.

I recommend you give this movie a chance, especially if you grew up through the 80's (younger audiences probably won't get the 80's kitsch style) Just don't expect anything other than tasteless madness. bear in mind this is a movie that has a pickle-firing train (yes you heard me right) and a judge with a nose that looks suspiciously like the business end of a mans baby maker!

Not the best horror comedy ever made, but well worth a look if you're in the mood for some senseless entertainment.
