The Blue Boy (1997)
Blue on Blue
Carlo Angelo gives a heartfelt and nicely modulated performance as a young man who has second (and third) thoughts about being involved in the world of pornography. He is torn between the love of his troubled girlfriend and the love of an older man, torn between his studies and the easy money he makes hustling on the side. The cinematography is gorgeous, and the performances are strong across the board. If only the weak screenplay could do this story justice! Nice moments throughout, but too often the dialogue just falls flat.
Norman... Is That You? (1976)
Pearl...What Were You Thinking?
This snarky, homophobic thing was dated in 1976. It seems particularly mean-spirited now, filled with gay stereotypes, and characters that are meant to be laughed at, rather than with. Redd Foxx does his standard schtick, Michael Warren at least tries to bring humanity to a one dimensional character, and Pearl--Pearl what were you thinking--? Pearl Bailey deserves far better.
