The Exorcism of God (2021)
Not so bad (Spoilers)
Ok, I gave this a watch as I like to give films a chance. But many clichés and trying to copy other successful Exorcism films made this a very run of the mill film. The priest tortured by his sins and guilt over love for a woman, the plagued Mexican village, the older wise priest ultimately meeting a sticky end - all done before and better. My other issue was the demon itself, too many times was I reminded of Linda Blair's part not in the Exorcist but Repossessed, a spoof of the Exorcist with Leslie Neilsen. The film had some potential but no real cohesion. More of a throw everything at the wall and see what sticks. Some novel ideas so give it a watch if you like possession films, I have seen a lot worse and I will say I liked the twist at the end, definitely made the film worth it.
Evil: Z Is for Zombies (2021)
I'm loving this!
I'm reading the reviews on here for the second season of Evil and am starting to wonder if I'm watching the same program. We've really been enjoying the different stories and are looking forward to seeing where it's going. Really good watch!
Agramon's Gate (2019)
Really not good
The ratings on here are false. This film was so badly acted and poorly shot. Hoped it would get better but didn't. Don't be fooled.
Midnight, Texas (2017)
Love it but sad it's not being renewed
Loved this series and think there's much more to it, more stories but its
Being cancelled no season 3
The Happytime Murders (2018)
Really funny
I don't know why people have been so negative about this film. Is it because Henson does the Muppets and this is a bit too crude. Anyway, because of the reviews we were a bit hesitant but decided to give it a go and found it hilarious. Definitely not one for the kids to see, but really worth a watch.
In Memorium (2005)
Not scary but I enjoyed it
There is an abundance of found footage films as we all know of late. Personally I would like to see an original film that has the potential to give me goosebumps and question whether I want to go downstairs and let the dog out at 1am. However, I did find myself intrigued by this film (despite the acting from the younger brother), what started off as a typical haunted house mystery becomes more of a supernatural revenge story. The chemistry between the couple seemed to work well and the director did a good job in making the story believable enough to lose yourself in and actually care about what the outcome would be for the main protagonists. Plus I don't think I've ever been as attracted to a guy who is vomiting blood before - think he brings a vulnerability I wasn't expecting. Generally not a bad film, I found myself wanting to see where it was going to take me and although not very scary I still enjoyed it.
Jem and the Holograms (2015)
What is the problem!
I was a big Jem fan back in the 80's so of course I was going to watch this. After all the slagging off I've heard I was quite surprised, the film was OK and they have tried to bring it up to date with involving the internet fame and stuff but there were quite a few bits that they kept in as well. First things first, this is a PG movie mainly geared towards young girls/tweens, I don't know what the people giving bad reviews were expecting - it is hardly going to be Shakespeare. The cast carried off their roles well and seemed to be having fun with it. The songs are OK, personally I would've liked a few stronger numbers but that's just me. The only thing I did have an issue with is Synergy - why has it gone from a powerful computerised system that conceals Jerrica's identity to a rather rubbish R2D2 that doesn't really do much. On the whole it was enjoyable and I hope they do another one as it was good to see The Misfits at the end. Watch it and make up your own mind.
Demonic (2015)
Unexpected little gem!
Where has this been hiding? It hasn't been on my radar at all so when I stumbled across it I did think it was probably another piece of garbage. I mean, this year hasn't really had much in the horror genre that was of any calibre so far. 'It Follows' was made a very big deal out of, but to me fell flat - Wow someone pootering along behind, scary! and I am being sarcastic, sorely disappointing. Anyway I digress, I found the storyline was interesting if not slightly predictable. The casting was good and do you know the best thing? It actually looked like a proper movie! From a real film studio! No shaky camera, awkward actors, unimpressive stories and bad editing. I'm not going to go into the details of the film as you can read the synopsis for that but I am going to tell you to give it a watch, it is worth it!
The Casebook of Eddie Brewer (2012)
A good old fashioned horror!
I really enjoyed this film. Going into it I was very sceptical as I have seen a lot of rubbish released lately and nothing that stands out. The casebook of Eddie Brewer goes back to films with a good story and slow burning terror rather than jump scares and gore. Although we are watching a documentary being shot, the viewer watches from the point of view of an outsider rather than a viewer of the documentary so we are privy to seeing things that aren't 'caught on tape'. The film slowly builds up so if you are looking for a horror that from the outset brings you blood and gore, things jumping out, CGI ghosts etc this film isn't going to be for you. However, if you enjoy films that have a bit of a ghost story then give this a go as you'll be pleasantly surprised. This is a low budget UK movie from Director & Writer Andrew Spencer. Cast members played their parts well especially our lead Ian Brooker who was wonderfully well cast and completely convincing as our middle aged, slightly tortured, ghost hunter with a past. A wonderful film - wish there were more like this, I may well have to watch again.
Screen (2013)
Not bad, not brilliant .******SPOILERS******
I stumbled on this as I was just flicking through trying to find something to watch. The general premise is a drive-in movie theatre where 40 years ago everyone who was in there watching the screen died and it remained a mystery. We follow 2 girls who decide to go along to a party held there for the anniversary which also coincides with Halloween (Yey).
For the majority of the film nothing happens, it's just talking and filming the road-trip and then local people to find out their take on the 'legend'. Then we are at the drive thru and watching the celebrations get underway, until the last few minutes of the film when things go to hell in a handcart.
I have seen a lot worse than this - the acting was passable. run time 70 minutes which was good as there isn't much story. However, it did keep me engaged enough that I didn't want to turn it off and for a change one of our leads acted in a sensible way when everything started going bad, she got in the car and drove away. All in all wasn't that bad.
Banshee Chapter (2013)
Scary! Review may contain Spoilers
It is quite rare nowadays to find a horror film that is genuinely scary and, although others may disagree, I was pleased to find that this was. I stumbled across it when I was home alone and couldn't find anything else to watch. I came away from the film feeling intensely creeped out with that song at the end credits stuck on repeat in my head.
The premise is loosely based around the covert MK Ultra human trials carried out in the late 60's early 70's by the CIA - For more information Google Project MK Ultra. Our story follows journalist Anne Rowe as she tries to find out what happened to her friend who disappeared while researching material for his book on Project MK Ultra. I won't go into more detail as I don't want to spoil it for anyone who may read this.
I would definitely recommend this film to someone else as I enjoyed it immensely. In fact, I have seen it 3 times now and it still creeps me out!
The Hospital (2013)
Soo Bad
I'm sorry I managed 4 minutes of this movie. I thought I would give it a go on the merit of the first review that said it was a good film. I wish I had read more reviews than just that one. The first minute after the film title in the café shows you everything you need to know - the acting is bad, the script is bad, the set is bad, the cast are bad - whoever put up any financial backing for this must have had money to throw down the drain. I really have absolutely no idea how someone could ever have rated this movie unless they made it or starred in it (and if you did I wouldn't shout about it if I were you, not one of you is talented enough to do a haemorrhoid commercial let alone have a viable career in acting).
There is nothing redeeming about this huge steaming turd of a movie. Just don't do it.
1666 (2011)
It's NOT that bad! *******SPOILERS********
I tried watching Knock Knock before the sequel, I turned it off in under 10 minutes and I have a high tolerance to trash movies. So next I tried this one, firstly it managed to pass the previous 10 minute cut off. The actors are unknown and not majorly bad actors. I managed to make it through the entire film, mainly due to curiosity and the 'Hollywood Murder House' guide. It was quite obvious what was going to happen, there were no shocks or real scares. A hint to there being a 'presence' once they get trapped in the house, a baby crying, a (not overly noticeable) figure in the background in one scene and some footsteps - the last scene being Aiden saying 'Oh my god, it's you' leads you to think that it must be someone he knows as how would he know what the 1930's former Residents look like?? But you aren't going to ponder much more on it. After the credits there is a eulogy to each character so they really want you to buy into this piece found footage, but it doesn't work. I do not think that it deserves the 2.7 rating it has I have seen a lot worse than this, but if you watch it it's not a film that will stay in your memory and you will find youself a little bored at times.
The Wicked (2013)
Meh...
This film has some awful reviews, personally I found the opening scenes creepy, the beginning I skipped a lot of acting was poor, cringeworthy and boring. After they get to the woods it gets a bit better. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it becomes a masterpiece in any way, shape or form, but if you like the 'Urban legend type story where teens get captured & then fight their way out' it gives you that - a bit tense and creepy in places. As I mentioned before I skipped along a few bits that were boring me and watched the more 'horror' bits and for me that made the film a lot better! As someone else said 'watch it drunk and it will be more fun'....
19 Doors (2011)
So, so bad.. (spoilers)
I actually did sit through this whole film purely out of curiosity and sheer willpower. You see the premise of the storyline is quite good, a tad cliché but still good. However, the production of this film sucked. The look of the whole thing wasn't even TV movie standard, more 'I've got a camera so I can automatically make a film!
The acting was not good, the little girl ghost is quite clearly trying to stifle giggling and looks like her mum made her up for Halloween. There was nothing convincing about any of the other 'ghosts' in fact. The dialogue was awkward with surprisingly some under-acting from the main protagonist - Err lady you're out of your possessive state and have stabbed your daughter to death, could you do something, you know scream, recoil in horror? Pyschic Helga was terrible, but the name made me laugh and drunken, sweaty priest came across as the 'kind of man we tell children to avoid'if you get my drift.
All in all, I would only suggest you watch this movie for two reasons: 1) You happen to be a friend or family of someone attached to or involved with the film and have to out of loyalty. or; 2) You want to see how not to make a film.
House Hunting (2012)
A good film!
"Two very different families search for the perfect house to call home. When both families show up at a deserted farmhouse, it quickly becomes clear that something is not right. After rescuing Hanna, a lost girl whose tongue has been cut out, they discover that every attempt to leave the farm takes them right back to the front door"
I bought this film of the shelf in a supermarket, quite cheap and figured well the bad acting will be amusing at least since most films I buy like that are! Well I put it off for a week or so and was at a loose end so thought why not give it a watch.
I am so glad I did - I was glued! It's not your typical gore-fest most Horror lovers seem to like nowadays, more cerebral as the characters descend into desperation and become haunted by their own personal demons the longer they are trapped. The film doesn't explain itself to you and requires you to put yourself in that mindset - what would you do? and I think that is what a lot of people don't like, it just is.
The acting was convincing enough, characters believable and setting was relatable. The actors in the film I hadn't heard of except for Marc Singer who was in Beastmaster (1982)when I was 4/5, but that didn't bother me. I hated the characters who were nasty and empathised with others who were trying to make the best of it which means to me they are doing a good enough job.
Overall, a good find. If you want all out horror, gore and jumping out of your seat terror then this is not for you. However, if you find you want something interesting and creepy give it a go!
The Amityville Haunting (2011)
Meh!
It's like somebody sat down & said "Hey, that Paranormal Activity film - wonder what that would be like if it was in the Amytiville house?" Really, you can't blame them for trying that style but you can for not executing it well. Has a lot of flaws, the layout & house are completely different. the acting is far from good and it isn't very scary at all. I had a lot of problems with the father character - sometimes it looked like he was going mad but it was difficult to decipher if it was a ghostly influence or if he was just a bit of a prat - I'm leaning towards the latter. The death scenes are unrealistic & a bit on the vague side. Maybe would have been a bit more convincing if there was a bit of depth to any of the characters.
However, if you watch this and remove the whole 'Amytiville' pretense, while also not expecting much it's OK to kill some time.
Oh and it would have helped if the ghost aka Ronald Defeo Jr was actually dead....
The Sickhouse (2008)
It's Okay..
As a rule I tend to judge a film by watching it myself. Taking heed of reviews, I thought this one may be worth a go. The opening titles were correct for the middle ages, especially the bird-like masks which as said in the film were worn by plague doctors & beaks stuffed with herbs and spices to 'prevent' breathing in the disease.
The film begins with the typical headstrong protagonist despite warning wanting to investigate a newly discovered vault in an archaeological dig site (old London hospital) that could be potentially a bio-hazard & is advised to stay away. Of course she doesn't, at the same time we see a bunch of London teenagers on a jolly for their friends birthday driving erratically - cue crash. On deciding to peg it from police they hot-foot it into the same (closed down) hospital as the protagonist. They all meet up and chaos ensues.
Nothing particularly striking, entertaining for people who gravitate towards horror genre. A different plot from most, same clichés - judge it on your own merit.
Haunting of Winchester House (2009)
Delivered what I expected
I am one who always enjoys ham-acted cheesy horror. I went into the film not expecting much out of it and I have to be honest that's what I got.
The script is banal, acting is poor, there are a lot of references to things that are unclear or not followed up on - baby seat in the trash at the beginning (thought there would be some sort of back story), the Winchester rifle theory, what's with all the newspaper cuttings and so on.
I had trouble believing the film was actually made in 2009 as it looks exceptionally dated, especially the father and had figured out the 'twist' in the ending within the first 30 minutes. It did have the odd creepy moment which I think were accidental as the scenes where they are actually going for the scare come off badly and not convincing (especially the baby in the bedroom - where does that come in?). The film doesn't really have any closure to it for instance: What happens to the rest of the ghosts? When you die do you just wander off aimlessly, where you going to go?
The title itself I feel was probably put there to attract attention from the consumer, as the film itself has nothing to do with Winchester House or any of the theories surrounding it which was quite a disappointment.
In conclusion, it is obviously not the best film ever made & certainly not the worst, this film just falls into the Abyss of movies that are not memorable, ham acted, and utterly inconsequential. Watch if it's there, but don't go out of your way....
