Mea Culpa (2024)
1/10
Tyler Perry is untalented. I said what I said.
26 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I do not understand how Tyler Perry has become so famous and wealthy. He can't write. He can only just direct. Yet he has some how made it big of the back of absolutely atrocious film like this.

Where is was the character development? Mea is supposed to be a powerful and successful attorney but has no depth and make poor decisions at every turn. Why are the brothers and mother so codependent?

Why weren't loose ends tied up? For instance... what happened to Charlise? What happened to Hydie? How was the crime scene faked?

I get this this film was just a vehicle for an erotic thriller... but even that was lacklustre and not worth the R18 rating.

Perry should stick to slapstick, unintelligent comedy... at least no one is supposed to take those seriously.

It's a shame that other talented people aren't given a chance to make movies and yet someone with so little talent has made it to this level. I'll give Tyler a 10/10 for knowing how to fake his way to the top and being a good businessman. I'll give the movie a 1/10. Maybe he should stick to producing content and hire the writing talent.

I said what I said.

Will shock sane people
10 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
If you want to see how easily some people can be brainwashed and sucked into doing things a normal sane person would never think of.. then watch this.

These two narcissistic grifters found their marks. And then made their marks work for them for free while boosting about their riches, and the people thought "I'm cool with that". It's insane!!

Throughout this documentary and things kept getting more and more insane I had to walk away a few times as I was yelling at my screen about how stupid people can be.

I shouldn't be so hard on the 'victims' ... but it's very difficult not to be floored at their lack of critical thinking skills.

It's wild!

Disagree with many of the reviews - liked production, not the director
28 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Many here seem to be placing a lot of blame and negativity on the production teams here... and while I did feel they should have been tougher and more outspoken with Meko (I was yelling at the screen sometimes for them to be blunt!!)... I felt Meko was SO resistant to feedback! And a terrible communicator, which you just cannot be as a director. Trying to be balanced again, I do think what the heck did the production team expect? She was very uncommunicative in the first presentation meeting, which is when you'd expect someone was putting in all their effort! So if she wasn't at that stage, what did they think was going to happen?!?

I also don't like the excuses some reviewers are making about the time/budget constrains... everyone knew what those were going in! And those has little to do with how resistant Meko was to take on board the notes being given. I do feel a little bit bad that this series may scare away any future people from wanting to have her as a director.

Overall I found this so frustrating to watch! I truly believe one of the other two of their top three would have done a better job dealing with the processes side of things. But we'll never know... perhaps if they had fit the mould of what the show was looking for more (not just be a woman).. then maybe we would have gotten to see a different series, one where things ran a lot smoother. Then again, smooth sailing doesn't bring the drama reality tv needs I suppose.

A fortunate misfortune.
23 April 2023
Can you imagine taking a spontaneous trip for a third date and getting stuck with that person in a foreign country for months. That's what happened to Matt and Khani. Seeing how they navigated through the situation was inspiring. Seeing their guards go up and down, their insecurities and vulnerabilities... but ultimately their trust in the free fall, truly was amazing to watch. I went into this not expecting much, but throughly enjoyed the ride.

I found myself actually longing for such spontaneity in my own life. Maybe I will just fly somewhere unexpected and trust in myself e pick to just see what happens.

Brilliant Documentary.

The Gray Man (2022)

Read the books! Then pretend this is not them, and you'll enjoy it.
23 July 2022
Let's get this out of the way... this is not The Gray Man of the books. It's a good action film. But this is NOT Court Gentry. This is your high octane action flick. It's fun. But again, it's not any of the characters we know and love from the books.

The Gray Man of the novels is far, far more nuanced. The books are one of my all time favourite Assassin series. The subtleties are what really make them work.

Read them. You'll see what I mean.

I wish this series had been given the same treatment as the James Reece books we've seen recently turned into a series staring Chris Pratt. Now that really did the books justice! Maybe a series would have allowed enough time to really tell the stories of Sierra Six/The Gray Man/Court Gentry the way it deserves.

So.. I'll pretend this is a complete differently Gray Man than the one I know from the novels... and will just enjoy it for what it is. 6.5/10.

Shocked this has managed to keep going..
1 May 2022
Ok it's 2022 and I just started watching this series from the beginning. My god... it's bad.. so so bad! The acting is mostly... awful (and I'm shocked to say that because there are some good actors in the lineup). The storyline's are so poorly conceived. Im honestly cringing. I don't understand how a show like this gets renewed and far better things get cancelled. It's a mystery I guess. I'm half way through this season, wondering if it gets better, but I don't know if I can stick it out to see.

The misogyny is strong with this one
21 February 2022
The host is an absolute misogynistic nightmare. How in earth did this get made?

Good grief, I persevered to episode three but I just can't stand it...

Incredibly moving (ignore the haters giving low reviews)
21 May 2021
First off, let me just state that there are people leaving low rating and bad reviews simply because Harry is Pernod the documentary. When clearly they haven't watched it and seen he is only a small part of the series.

That being said, the documentary is incredibly well done. I felt moved by everyone's story and their vulnerability.

Please watch this and judge for yourself.

Very anti-climatic ending!
16 December 2020
The other reviews here cover most of the points about how bad this is. The writing, the acting etc. But let's not forget that the ending is totally anticlimactic. No resolution at all. Just setting up for another season.

Now, I'm all for a cliffhanger ... but to leave it with so many other things unresolved is just annoying. I gritted my teeth through the story to get some kind of payoff at the end, but alas, I did not.

Unbearable, like, omg, really *eye roll*
8 October 2020
Well... I think most reviewers have already captured the main points. From the shrill, annoying and vapid hosts... to the less than helpful organisations tips. I would go so far as to say the organisation these people do is BASIC and completely uninspiring. How do these women have such a successful business? I would imagine their base is the same sort of truly annoying people.

Empowering
27 August 2020
I found myself captivated by this film. Very well put together documentary!

The strength and determination of the athletes was inspiring.

It was great also to really be informed of the history behind the Games which I never really knew. I found myself tearing up a number of times at the emotion and effort so many put into their sport and the behind the scenes of the Games.

Definitely worth watching!

Still in awe...
30 January 2020
.... of this masterpiece. This series (especially Part I) still captivates me and I think of it often. Part I was so magical and mystical - truly thought provoking - I've watched it many times. Part II was a total departure from Part I, but still thoroughly enjoyable. I've read that they had 5 seasons planned out, and I'm truly heartbroken that it was cancelled. I want to know what those next 3 seasons would have held for us!

Labouring my way through...
5 January 2020
... in order to see where it goes. But it's difficult. Poppy is extremely unlikeable and I'm not a great fan of Octavia's acting here. I also find her relationships with the two men (husband and ex) very mismatched - I cant see either of them being in a relationship with her to be honest. Aaron Paul is great but he isn't seen as often as needed to hold this cast up. The Lanie/Josie characters are a bit of a caricature and over-acted. I'm hoping they will pull something out for the last few episodes that surprises us and redeems the series.

A true narcissist and psychopath
19 December 2019
I knew of this case and was keen to see what angle this would go. I thought it was well put together. Intriguing. Horrifying. Fascinating. Luka is a psychopath (and his mother is completely delusional and needs a slap.) He is a narcissist and attention seeker. I wouldn't believe a word he says. He's acting in his police interviews to seem vulnerable but he is an obvious manipulator. In this social media, selfie obsessed age, I'm surprised we don't have more Lukas. Let this be a warning to us all.

Well I think this show has proven that the self-taught social media 'MUAs' we see today really need to go take some classes. This was just embarrassing.

Fun and moving!
2 November 2019
I absolutely loved this series. The connection they formed with each person and how they helped them become more confident was truly moving! And of course... there was the fabulousness the Fab 5 are known for!

As a side note, the other review on here whinging about subtitles?!? Err did you not see they were in JAPAN! Of course there's going to be subtitles. How silly and rude! Did you expect them only to deal with English speaking Japanese? Ridiculous and bigoted.

Watch it, read it and love it!

What would you do?
18 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This documentary film is profoundly moving and deeply thought provoking.

As the synopsis speaks to, and no doubt other reviews will, it is an absolutely extraordinary true story.

WARNING: major spoilers ahead!

It leaves you to wonder... what would you have done if you had been Marcus?

Would you have constructed the fantasy to save your twin from the truth and by proxy giving yourself a pseudo-reprieve you could grasp hold of also?

I'm sure there will be a divide between us all in that choice; some imagine they would go one way and some the other. I think if we are honest, we will never truly know how we would react in that extraordinary situation.

I could see things from both of the twin's sides. But my heart leans towards Marcus. He was still so young and didn't have the tools to give voice to that terrible story and handle the inevitable fall-out at that time.

But I know from my own experience that you can only repress those memories for so long. And one look at the deeper etched lines on Marcus' face tells me the toll that has taken on him. The immense burden he carries.

By the same token, Alex has had to live without the full truth of his childhood and I can imagine that has been quite a different, yet also heavy load to bear.

I can only hope that this unloading in front of the world has helped them both. This film has truly touched my soul.

To finish, I will say: after it was over, selfishly I wished for two things. One, that Alex would have said something like 'I'm so sorry that you have to live with those memories in your head' - though that might sound like survivors guilt in a strange way. And two, that I could have had just one hour alone with their mother and all those men. Enough said.

A nice wee film
29 August 2019
I enjoyed this. It's nice to see one of these lighthearted romances set in my own country. Only gripe...Would have been better if the lead male actor had actually been a Kiwi and not an Aussie... given the film makes of lot of the quintessential NZ lifestyle

Will Season 3 redeem itself?
14 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know if there is going to be a season 3... but I hope like hell it redeems itself after this mess.

And that mayor better get some comeuppance. This is not ok.

Go back to legal drama. Forget the gruesome thriller angle.

Loved Part I, liked Part II
25 March 2019
So this may not be a popular opinion, I'm ok with that... my rating for Part I (season 1) was 10/10, my rating for Part II was 6/10.. here's why:

Part I allowed me to become very invested in the characters. I loved the Science Fiction / thriller aspect of it. Part II took a turn more into the mystical, with less character development. It became less believable and that's what I liked about about Part II.

In a way I wish I had stopped at the end of Part I. I actually loved the open ending it gave us. Where you can only imagine what might have happened.

Part II got more convoluted. I couldn't really connect with the new people introduced and wished there had been more of the old crew given screen time.

There's a lot more I could say, but it would probably contain spoilers.

Yes, I'm slightly disappointed in this Part II, but that's ok as well.

Polarising - for me, hauntingly beautiful
27 April 2018
The pacing is slow as many have pointed out as a negative. I don't know why. Not everything has to be full tilt. I found my absorbed, questioning, confused, dazzled and aching for answers.. some of which never come, and I'm ok with that. But disappointed I was not! This is obviously a polarising show. If you are after something that doesn't spoon feed you answers or meaning, but are willing to let the questions marinade in your own mind, I believe this is for you. It definitely was for me and I'm still not over it. I am anxious for season two, and hope it carries on in the same haunting way.

Subtle and beautiful - well deserved accolades
27 February 2017
This subtleties of this film cannot be overstated, but are no doubt not appreciated by all.

Am I pleased it won the Best Picture Oscar over meaningless fluff like La La Land? I have to say yes. Is it the best film of the year? That, of course, is subjective. But in my opinion the depth of story and performances far outweighs the aforementioned film.

It is not an in-your-face statement of what it is to be a gay black boy or man. It is simply a honest portrayal of one story of such however.

Those who found it boring are probably used to action or melodrama, not the intricacies of film art or the human experience.

Bravo to a well deserved recognition.

Enjoyable, yet also disappointing
25 December 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This does contain SPOILERS!!

. . . .

Well, I watched the whole thing, and enjoyed some of it... but my biggest problem is that it was like 'Cliché Writing 101' ... it seems they wanted to throw in as many clichés as they could:

A naïve female lead who can only manage one gormless expression throughout - check

A mean rival - check

An injured, drug addicted, sex addicted beauty - check

A crazy conductor - check

Wait.. let's make that two crazy conductors - check

A quirky roommate - check

An artsy boyfriend - check

I could go on.... suffice to say I was disappointed. There was so much potential for this to be great.

I love Gael Garcia Bernal .. but he is much more suited to dramatic roles in my opinion. He seemed like a caricature in this.

And the final, biggest disappointed came right at the end when they tried to create something between Hayley and Rodrigo. There was absolutely no sexual chemistry between them the whole time, and to do that right at the end seem like extremely lazy writing, lacking in any originality! (Plus they just look completely wrong together!). Trying desperately to line something up for another season to hold some interest.. but that dead horse has been beaten so many times before, they should have come up with something better.

Yawn
4 September 2011
OK.. I am all for Art Films. I adore them! But I have to agree with the low rating viewers here.. I cannot fathom why some have rated this so highly. It simply.......... tries too hard (and fails). I get all the spectacular shots... the forming of the earth, the meaning of life. I just found it so redundant that it was fit around a plot that to me could have been a completely different movie altogether. If you want to smoke something and then watch the movie for the visual effects - go ahead. If you want to be moved by a story - don't bother. Oh I'm sure all those who think they are Intellectuals will rave about it. Sorry guys, I just couldn't find anything in this worthy of two and a half hours of my time.

Yep, awful!
14 May 2010
A faltering plot line that stumbles it way through to no resolution. Now, I usually like mysterious endings, but this one just gave me nothing. Add to that the forced Hitchcock-esquire style of presentation that also fell incredibly short.

The acting was horrific! Let's face it, Cameron Diaz is the poor man's Charlize Theron and while James Marsden is incredibly pretty, he's no Colin Firth. These two actors should stick to romantic comedy. They are just not suited for the thriller genre.

I'm surprised I persevered through the end of this movie. Don't waste your time!
