Adaptation. (2002)
No
This movie is literally about nothing in a bad way. Cage plays a scriptwriter under pressure to deliver a screenplay and is experiencing writer's block. He has trouble focusing, feels guilty and sort of wants to date also. He also has a twin brother and the worst hair possible.
The cast is really good but the script is really all over the place and the movie doesn't decide what it wants to be. Is it about orchids? Is it about Cage's or Chris Cooper's character?
The first half of the film is so-so, the ending is a real let down because the most likable characters (the ones that have a passion for something, Ch. Cooper + Cage's twin) get killed off or their careers ruined as some primitive attemt at morality play.
I can understand Cage for doing this movie (he'll do anything which is kind of impressive in a way) but Streep, Cooper, Swinton? Why? It's pretentious, not clever and teaches only that the loser finally gets the girl. That's not how real life works.
Waste of talent and resources on a very poor script. How the hell was this even greenlighted?
Freedom Uncut (2022)
Kind of a let down
I watched this mostly because i'm a big fan of GM and was hoping for more insight into who the man is. We know how George always needed his privacy and this is completely normal. When you're a world-wide megastar at 21, things start to mess with your head. I think he handled it really well. I enjoyed the rare photos and live concert clips of Careless Whisper etc. But the general mood of the documentary was a bit sad. The interviews seemed really cherrypicked and one sided. I learned some new things, like how losing the love of his life affected George. I just wished for more hope, more structure, more celebration. He brought so much joy to the world - this documentary ignores it like it's some small thing.
Scrooged (1988)
As a Bill Murray fan, i found this movie just awful
I am someone who loves goofball 80s comedies like Trading Places, Fletch, Private Resort and Caddyshack. And i love Murray. But "Scrooged" just leaves a bad taste in your mouth. I found it loud, mean, dark and amateurish. It is supposed to be a comedy, but where are the jokes?
Murray plays a selfish tv executive, who is in trouble with their christmas production. When he is visited by 3 christmas ghosts, he sees the error of his ways and decides to become good and charitable. But somehow i don't buy it. It seemed staged and insincere. Murray's performance seems flat, as if he's uncomfortable.
The supporting cast is talented, but it's wasted as there's no real story. I found myself washing dishes out of boredom. Not recommended.
3 Idiots (2009)
what an amazing feelgood movie
What a wonderful time for me, to discover Bollywood cinema. This movie will open your heart. I'm stunned at how effortlessly the movie jumps from silly comedy to serious tragedy. "3 Idiots" always remains tasteful, even though the Idiots do some really idiotic things. And when it's funny, it is really laugh-out-lound-funny.
Why is "3 Idiots" so special? Because it grips you completely. It is so colourful and beautifully filmed, the storytelling is really captivating and unusual. I loved the musical bits here and there. The characters are lovable and hilarious (Rancho, The professor at ICE, Silencer). The cliches somehow seem fresh (escaping the wedding with the bride). But more than this, it has a really powerful message about love, true friendship, family and dreams.
I asked a waiter at an Indian restaurant to recommend me an Indian movie and he wrote this and 2 other names on a piece of paper. Really happy i saw this movie. It will stay with me.
Tõde ja õigus (2019)
Leaves a bad taste in your mouth.
Somehow this book "Truth & Justice" by Anton Hansen Tammsaare is considered the greatest novel of Estonian literature. Two neighbors bicker over minor things for 20 years. The pretty wife dies of an illness and we also see a lot of child coffins. The protagonist who was a good guy in the beginning becomes a bitter and spiteful old man, the neighbor somehow seems more normal now.
On the bright side, the cast is very good. The set design looks very true to the movie's era. The cinematography is awesome.
The story is such a drag and enforces the old dogma that all estonians are corrupt and hate their neighbor and would cut down any forest to make money - a very touchy subject for the whole estonian community. Not everyone is like that. I refuse to accept that idea. Younger estonian generations are the opposite of how people in the movie are portrayed.
