Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)
Dumb fun
The stigma going into this film is that Michael Bay produced this film and that must mean that it's a Michael Bay film full of all the Michael Bay-isms so many people have come to hate. That is not the case. This film is its own movie full of fun action and humor free from Michael Bay's influence.
This film shoots to be very akin to the TMNT cartoons and it shows with the cheesy one liners and the fun interactions between the four brothers, and combined with modern CGI animation, the movie looks and sounds great. The plot and villains are generic, but then again, neither were they anything special in any of the cartoons either, and neither should you expect anything more from this movie.
Do not go into this movie expecting it to be a masterpiece, because it is not...nor should you instantly expect it to be bad because of what movie critics may think. Go into this movie expecting dumb fun, and you will be pleased. I recommend this film to anyone wanting a good time.
Psycho-Pass (2012)
Good, but not "Great"
The story this anime takes on is a very common one, future utopian or dystopian society, morally ambiguous cops. These concepts have been done to death, yet Gen Urobuchi does a good job of making the story feel fresh. Rather then following the usual "big brother" government that is straight up evil, the message is balanced that shows a need for "the system," yet also points out the flaws. The characters are hit or miss. For the most part the characters are good, and feel real...then there are characters that feel too much like a trope or flat out boring, and to the the show's credit, those characters for the most part are not over played...for the most part. My favorite aspect of the characters though is that the characters grow. You definitely can tell that the characters are different in the end. The execution of everything was great in the beginning. Exposition is kept to the essentials treating you, the viewer, as an intelligent being capable of figuring things out on your own. That being said, towards the end, the show falls victim of wrap everything up with exposition, and it slows the third act down horribly. All in all, Psycho-Pass is a good show, it has enjoyable characters, and an engaging story up until the end, which was a real shame cause I did really enjoy watching it.
Fairy Tail (2009)
An entertaining series with good development and potential
I am a watcher of many animes, and the way I can tell how good or entertaining a series is is how it captures me in the first few episodes. Fairy Tail manages to do exactly that. Sure there are going to be a few weak points and continuity within the story, but there are plenty of strong points too. A good and bad note for the series is how there are so many characters within; it can be good because some characters you'll connect with better then others, but that is also a bad thing since it divides much needed attention to what is relevant at the moment, however Hiro Mashima handles it quite well. The score, done by Yasuharu Takanashi, does well in delivery the tones from intense to sad to flat out silly (and in many ways, saves the show in its weak moments).
Yes there are fillers, but not as many as other ongoing Shounen series such as Naruto or One Piece, and Fairy Tail moves at a quicker pace then both and the fillers for the most part are stand alone episodes in which the animators and studio story writers have a ball doing. The humor is very silly and childish, which is actually a plus I think.
It's definitely not the best series out there, but it has a lot of potential. It is a good solid series that I strongly recommend.
