Elementary (2012–2019)

A freelance criminal consultant attaches himself to an NYPD crime unit and attracts a doctor as a sidekick.

The plots are on the high end of smart and the ensemble works well with or against each other. I like the sparks between the Sherlock and the Watson characters. Unlike most American crime dramas, the dramatic weight is scored down and lean. As for comparison with the British, "Sherlock" show, there is no comparison because the character base is completely different for both series. The British Sherlock is passed off as a crime-curious sociopath teamed up with a psychotic ex-military medico Watson and balance symbiosis as the interactive dynamic. The Elementary presentation has Sherlock as a hard core neurotic looking for comfort through a very grounded partner who happens to be a career-confused doctor. Both presentations are brilliant but there is no possible way to play the same because the characters answer to different Gods. On the subject of British drama, I think the Brits have invented the, "Inscrutable Anglo" which seems to play real well with a snotty .001% of American movie goers and probably stuns the Japanese. I must assume that the key to weak innuendo that infests so many British plays is in the culture that births it.

High Society (1995–1996)

I liked this show enough to track down a copy on the net so I can watch it once in awhile.

I found this comedy magnetic and extremely funny. The chemistry between the two women flowed like an electrical charge that energized the humor and the humor and dialog were dead-center sync to the plot lines. It was a well-rounded and seamless and, like most 1st-season shows, a little vulnerable, but without the usual bumbling and apologies that go with a new show. It was great theater and funny enough to re-knot my belly button a few times per episode.

The constant comparison to "Ab Fab" seems to state more about the utter lack of imagination on the part of the reviewers than an actual likeness. "Ab Fab" was scored along the lines of "Benny Hill" and "High Society" was scored closer to some of the modern-day TV comedies like "Scrubbs" or "Desperate Housewives".
