Dune (2021)
Best Sci fi since Blade Runner.
Dune is one of the best books I've ever read, a really good story connects to something greater deep inside, and that's what Dune did for me... So when I saw they were coming out a new Dune movie, expectations were high (especially after trying to watch the original movie from the 80s, which for me was difficult).
Dune absolutely delivered. Everything about this movie is a 10. The visuals, the soundtrack, the characters and the story.. there just isn't much I think you can fault this film on. Villeneuve will go down as one of the greatest directors of all time and I'm glad he's the one directing the Dune series.
We dont often get movies that deliver on this scale anymore, so many sci fi movies try and fail to be a fraction of what Dune achieves .
10/10.
Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
Epic Sci-Fi Action
One of the best sci fi movies in the past 10 years and one of Tom Cruise's best movies IMO. When you forget your watching a movie then it's a good movie, and this no doubt achieved that. I've watched this one a few times and I always forget how good it is.
The pace of this movie is what pulls you in, the editing is so good. The whole Groundhog Day theme is executed perfectly as are the sci fi elements of the alien race and higher intelligence.. It's a good action movie with quality characters which is so often what sci fi movies lack. (Ahem Prometheus)
There is no denying Tom cruise is a great actor and is apart of great movies that both make you think and are entertaining: Minority Report, vanilla sky, eyes wide shut, Oblivion, Egde of a tomorrow and the list goes on...
The Alpinist (2021)
Fantastic story of a climbing legend
Simply put, This film was beautiful. Marc Andre is an inspiring guy, loves life, loves climbing and seems like the kind of wholesome guy we all wish we had as a friend. His authenticity, especially in this day and age make him such a rarity and you get a sense of what a one of a kind he is. No phone or social media, just his passion for climbing, without the need to take a picture or tell anyone about it...
The visuals in the film are stunning, the film itself had a very similar feel to 'Free Solo' which is next level. It was a beautiful story that the filmmaker executed perfectly i feel...
If you're into climbing or adventure films, this is for you. 9/10.
Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain (2021)
Inspiring story, but be careful what you wish for.
I can't say I ever really followed Bourdains shows, but was aware he had made an impact, just never realized what a legend he was. I found his life story not only really interesting, but inspiring. A true underdog who took risks and was rewarded beyond his imagination.
With that said, he obviously was a troubled man from a young age, and that followed him his entire life... I'm glad the documentary doesn't shy aware from the dark aspects of his life, but admittedly it is tough to reconcile. The documentary asks existential questions that have no answers, and therefore makes you think about your own life, how to live and ultimately is proof that the grass is not always greener. If I had to sum it up, what is the price to paid to live that life of constant action and chasing the next goal post... What toll does Fame and fortune take on ones soul?
One of the quotes from the film that resonated deeply was about a curse living in between two worlds, never feeling home or safe: " there's No better feeling than coming home, and no better feeling than leaving home..." I believe he as an adventurer helped open peoples eyes to the world out there and how to experience it, but as a man he can help people appreciate their own lives, however mundane or seemingly uninteresting and not to take what and who they have for granted...
8/10.
Telemarketers (2023)
Great Mini series that keeps you hooked
Wasn't sure what to expect from this one and was thoroughly impressed. This film a is a glimpse into another life most will never have or think about. I Love when a filmmaker films for so many years that the story unfolds over time, just as much as they do. This film is all about the characters, they seem so unreal they have to be made up, which is why it's so entertaining...
The footage inside the call centre is unbelievable really, how any business could operate that way let alone successfully... The film unfolds each episode and grows into a scam of such epic proportions, it is unfathomable. As always, follow the money.
Worth a watch for sure. 8/10.
The Shift (2023)
A decent blend between sci-fi and spirituality/Gnosticism
I don't think this movie deserves the low reviews it's getting based on people who cannot entertain the Christian/spiritual themes of the movie. I found it to be refreshing take on sci fi and overall social commentary that leaves you thinking about the world we live in today.
With this said, I wouldn't say it's a great movie, but not because of the content but because of the execution. The concepts are great but at times it feels a bit cheesy or for me and plot points don't quite add up, which reminds me I'm watching a movie. But overall it's Better than a lot of other movies being made now a days with bigger budgets and cast. Once again I'm really impressed with what Angel Studios has achieved.
6.5/10.
The Pez Outlaw (2022)
A documentary worth watching, a real underdog story.
This is what documentaries are all about IMO, powerful storytelling. When you can tell a story about something that most people could care less or don't know anything about, but make it really engaging, you're a great storyteller.
And the whole reason for a great story is a great character, and this film has one heck of a character... On top of that though, The cinematography and pacing of the edit was top notch, even the re-enactments were really well done.
Not much to criticize really, all the interviews helped to give a good view of the Pez Outlaw, and I think what takes it to the next level is the factor of the villain, representing the establishment.
Who dosnt like an an underdog story...
Worth a watch for sure.

Vesper (2022)
Ok movie. Lots of potential, but falls short.
An alright movie that didn't have that extra bit to make it a good movie. Some brave new world type themes mixed with fallout/ Mad Max, but sadly misses the mark for me.
While some of the world building was well done, some really nice visuals and concepts but as a whole, it just felt like they ran out of budget to make it the movie it could have been.
Basically the movie never goes anywhere, just feels like it's shot in and around a cabin the entire time. There is this threat of his whole other civilization out there that is constantly looming over their lives... yet we know nothing about them. A missed opportunity to get a feel for this other life they aren't a part of... Which would have made this a much better movie I think, instead it feels too long and the pace can't keep up.
Still not a bad movie, something different for sure, but I think it sits safely at 6.5/10.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Tried way too hard, woke writing is cringe worthy.. A real missed opportunity...
It's like people just discovered satire for the first time...As a movie, it's pretty darn bad and its wayyyy to long. Cut out 45 minutes and this film would be remarkably better, it is a chore to get through the first hour.. I get the feeling the director and writers have spent too much time in an echo chmaner... There is no way around it, the writing is awful. Besides a few chuckles its cringe worthy how unfunny the movie is but actually attempting to be funny. THIS IS NOT IDIOCRACY. Not even close.
The first hour is about as unwatchable as a movie can get. I understand the uncomfortableness they were trying to go for, they certainly succeeded and then some...
The cinematograohy is some some of the worst I've seen from a movie with a big cast like this. And for me it took me out of the moment in every scene, but that is forgiving.
All of it can be forgiven in a way because the subject matter is important. And where the movie itself fails, the satirical message saves the day. But I dont know if it's enough to make it a watch to be honest. Go watch SouthPark instead.
The Irregulars (2021)
Cringe Worthy
Dont waste your time there is nothing good here. There are so many better shows to watch based in the time period. Just like super hero movies , this is so over done.
The 13th Warrior (1999)
I expected more. Did not age well
There are not many Viking movies let alone good viking movies, and I had higher hopes for the 13th warrior. The reviews for this movie were overwhelmingly positive, however it's just not a very good movie...
Antonia Banderas is totally the wrong person for this role, a Spanish man pretending to be arab... it's not believable.
This story would have been better told from the Norse point of view in the beginning, rather than the 13th warrior. It just feels rushed. And the magical ability to understand language was silly.
The score feels out of place as well. Ultimately the movie feels like a missed opportunity. But hey its 30 years old so maybe it was better for 1999. Ultimately I found it boring and unbelievable.
