American Exorcist (2018)
Could have been good but...
The premise is good but every other aspect of film, with the exception of make up, was horribly executed. It really felt like a bad student film, and not even a thesis, more like a 321 or homework assignment.
This building/demon/whatever didn't seem to want to kill her that badly. Maybe it was having a stoner day and another demon kept kicking it in the butt to "clean its room".
Mom demon "Go kill the intruder!"
"I don't feel like it.."
"NOW!"
*SIGH* "Fine!"
The production design may be the party that bugs me the most. It's been 34 years and there's not a speck of dust anywhere in an office that still has the Christmas decorations up since 1984. Also, they cleaned up the blood and nothing else I guess? I get not having a budget but it seemed lazy. Plus, all the equipment she lugged in and in none of it was a laptop charger?
Last 10 minutes or so were pretty great, but that was due to the other actors in those few scenes, not the one we've been stuck watching for the last hour and a half.
Also, who edited this movie? Like, were you trying to piece together what you could from the crap you were given? No one needs to watch this chick burn sage in super long shots for 5 minutes straight. Also, talk about a BS ending. Ffs.
Well, that concludes the character limit I had to reach to post a review. Hope it was a fun set and that the crafty was amazing.
The Essex Serpent (2022)
Uneventful Story, Danes was a poor choice
The story itself isn't much of a story mainly due to the lack of chemistry between the leads. While I enjoy most of Claire Danes work, I fell this role wasn't a good fit for her. It felt like she was going through the motions and responding to everything with face spasms. While I know there are some changes from the book I find it difficult to believe that anyone, even then could be that oblivious to the obvious. Watching her and poor Tom Hiddleston kiss was cringy at best, outright cold and awful at it's worst. The rest of the cast seems wasted as they are over shadowed by Cora's complete inability to read any situation AT ALL. She may be able to read a book but she certainly can't read the room.
