Dead Season (2012)
A zombie movie with...wait for it...a brain!
A lot of thought went into the script, and from the looks of it, a lot of love went into the production and performances of this way better than average zombie chiller. Suffice it to say that the story packs some real surprises, previously unexplored within the genre. The locations look sufficiently post-apocalyptic, and the humans appear to be honestly at the end of their proverbial rope. And that's a smart idea. Too many movies like this have a bunch of well-fed, good-looking actor armed to the teeth with seemingly endless supplies of ammo and enthusiasm. Dead Season does not disappoint. On the contrary, it serves up good scares, a good story and some good gore make for an nail-biting thought-provoking good time.
Kiran Over Mongolia (2005)
An insider's view of an exotic and exciting adventure few Westerners have ever dreamed of.
Forget bronco-busting or lion-taming. When it comes to bringing wild beasts into the service of humankind, nothing can compare to the eagle-hunters of Mongolia. A memorable cast of Mongolian Kazaks take to the steppes to catch a "Kiran", a golden eagle. Their quest: to trap her, tame her and teach her to hunt for wild game. But as vivid as these characters may be, they are eventually upstaged by the stark beauty of the Mongolian landscape, and the soaring flight of the eagle herself. Shot entirely on location, Joseph Spaid's "Kiran Over Mongolia" will transport you to a place you've never been, and show you things you've never imagined. And best of all, everything you'll see is real.
Headspace (2005)
Blood, guts...and brains!
A thinking man's horror flick with plenty of thrills, chills and shocks to sate even the most jaded genre vet. Nuanced performances from vets Atherton, Kir, Hussey and Wallace-Stone. Director van den Houten and producer/d.p. Miller endow this indie with production values that look more like a major release. And new face Chris Denham is one to watch. The New York City locale gives it a gritty reality, and the special and creature effects lift it from the real to the eerily surreal. They have done a very good job of mixing it up, putting well known movie actors in with a talented group of indie players, all the more impressive given their (prior) anonymity. A good scare, and a good time, with an underlying premise that stays with you once you're out of the theater.
