The Wolfman (2010)
Complex characters suffer from lack of development
Man, this could have been so great. I'm even the type of horror fan that loves cheese so I feel like I put up with a lot. But it just fell flat. My biggest complaint: no character development. The dialogue almost seemed to be sliced down. Maybe not, maybe it was written that way. Anthony Hopkins and Benecio Del Toro are great, but they seem to have nothing to work with. Both characters are complex but the dialogue is so sparse we never get to really appreciate either. Too bad. Both actors were good picks. Other things in the movie that drove me nuts. What was up with that music? Danny Elfman is my favorite composer of movie scores but I can't stand when the music tells you how to feel. It was way over the top without any subtleness when subtleness would have worked best. Why didn't the Talbots have British accents? I mean I can suspend reality but there was even a scene where I heard a tinge of Puerto Riccan accent in Del Toro. The other actors had British accents. And let's face it folks, we know Del Toro and Hopkins can do British accents! Which that is a minor complaint. I know I could have forgiven that if it weren't for everything else. So why the 4 stars? Hey the actual wolfman and the mayhem were cool to me in its cheesiness. It was a lot of fun. Those to me seemed to be the best scenes. It may have worked better if they had played on the cheese a little or even added just a tinge of tongue and cheek humor, not taking itself so seriously. Come on, a giant wolf human howling at the moon: that is just asking for a little bit of humor somewhere.
