Friday Night Dinner: The Females (2020)
Perfect ending to a near perfect show.
I'm typically disappointed with how most shows end. But Friday Night Dinner somehow pulled off the perfect ending even though the show might have gone on if Paul Ritter hadn't sadly passed away.
Everything in previous seasons led up to this episode and it really allowed the whole cast to shine. But in the end it was Paul Ritter's Martin who really shone through. It's hard to imagine we will never get to see Martin again.
I won't give away any spoilers, but suffice it to say that the boys are finally forced to grow up because they now have "females" in their lives or is it one girl in two bodies - The Lucy.
Ghosts (2021)
Rose McIver
This would be an incredibly mediocre remake of a decent Bro comedy if Rose McIver wasn't the star. She elevates it just slightly enough to make it enjoyable. It would be a 4.5 and she makes it an 7.5.
Doom Patrol: Dead Patrol (2021)
Just gets better and better
Doom Patrol is easily the best comic book TV series and every episode just cements that fact. Like others, I really hope we get more Dead Boy Detectives down the line. The last two episodes have been brilliant.
Cry Macho (2021)
Not the Eastwood of old.
With every movie Eastwood makes you can tangibly feel his skills as a filmmaker diminish. It's really a shame watching his downward spiral. I don't care about his politics like some people. I judge him solely on his acting and directing. As for his acting, I wish he would cast another actor in the roles he casts himself. He's always been a pretty one dimensional actor and early on in his career it didn't make a difference because the roles only really called for an actor without much depth. But as he's progressed into his later films that multidimensional need is ever present and missing. While I doubt he'll stop making movies, I really wish he would so he could protect the legacy of his earlier films.
Mean Mums (2019)
Super Cute
It's light fare and the main characters all fit nicely together. I'll pretty much watch anything with Anna Jullienne in it.
For Sama (2019)
Please watch this movie
This movie destroyed me. I've seen many movies and documentaries about war, but nothing like this. Seeing what the regime backed by the Russians are willing to do to keep power including killing whole families and specifically targeting hospitals is a wake up call to anyone with half a heart and a soul. This is the raw, unvarnished horror of war. But still hope ... For Sama.
Watchmen (2019)
That wasn't Watchmen ...
That wasn't Watchmen in any meaningful way. Sure, there were a few similar story threads and a couple of characters that were in the phenomenal comic series. But that's about it. While it wasn't horrible as a TV pilot, it was horrible as an adaptation of the Watchmen comic. I always love Regina King and some of the other actors are great. But this wasn't Watchmen to my mind.
It's obvious that the creators of the series wanted to do something original and felt they couldn't do that within the constraints of the original comic like the (less than phenomenal) movie. It's also clear they wanted this to have parallels to where we currently are in society and a where things may be headed. Maybe if this wasn't meant to be Watchmen and had a different name I would enjoy it more. But as a devotee I can't really recommend the series. Having said that, there are plenty of people who will like it, find it entertaining and worth their time. It wasn't bad by any measure. Just not what I was expecting or hoping for in the end.
12 Strong (2018)
Highly mediocre
The acting was ok, but some of it seemed miscast. The screenplay was sloppy and the liberties they take with the (true) story seemed gratuitous. While it wasn't horrible, it was certainly not theater worthy. There were much better war/soldier movies to come out like Hacksaw Ridge and Dunkirk.
Lost in Space (2018)
Better than the movie for sure
Of course a bunch of alt-right trolls and Russians are going to rate this a 1 citing "PC nonsense" as their reasoning. Most of these (if not all) people(?) haven't even watched the show and are the same people who rate every movie and TV show they don't agree with a 1. Molly Parker and Toby Stephens are both good (as always) and the kids are decent. I like that they made Parker Posey the Dr. Smith character. Why not? I thought the robot was decent which was one of my biggest concerns when I started the series.
