Get on Up (2014)
read 'The HARDEST WORKING MAN IN SHOW BUSINESS'
I watched this last night and really thought they did justice to the music (seamless lip-synching by Chadwick Boseman) with a lot of re-created live performances (Live at the Apollo, Paris, Boston, VietNam) filmed (TAMI Show, Ski Party, Playboy After Dark) and to the complicated man. Not sure about the historical accuracy of band and other politics, but very enjoyable time-shifting bio-pic and another great performance by Boseman. If you're a James Brown fan, you'll enjoy it even more. For a historical context, read 'The HARDEST WORKING MAN IN SHOW BUSINESS' by James Sullivan (which I just read last week).
Ghostbusters (2016)
Summer movie fun revisited
I was hoping not to see a remake, and the movie had a fresh story line, characters while maintaining enough of the original with cameos from both original actors and original ghosts. A long movie, but my friends and I didn't even notice. Ignore the ignoramuses, see for yourself & have fun.
Mathematically speaking, the queen is far and away the most potent force on the board. Yet there are certain situations in which the lady's subordinates are more deserving of reincarnation.
To be sure, under promotion is exceedingly rare in tournament practice. In fact, there are only two circumstances under which it makes sense to under promote:
1. Promoting to a queen (or rook!) allows a stalemating combination.
2. Promoting to a knight is a better tactical or positional choice based on its unique movement.
Man on a Tightrope (1953)
Brilliant acting, direction and screenplay
Other IMDb reviewers miss a subtle point. This manages to simultaneously savage communist oppression and anti-communists from the House Un-American Activities Committee. SPOILER: When the secret police question the circus owner, he explains that he has no politics, that circus is his politics, his religion, his life. For the interrogator, all must submit to the primacy of the political. I imagine Kazan felt the same about the theater and his movies, and HUAC certainly demanded the same submission. Watching this on TV today, I thought it was a European film. And no other film from this period that is anti-communist has this degree of sophistication or subtlety. I would love to hear Milos Forman's opinion of this film.
In a Lonely Place (1950)
Psychological dimension
"There are many signs of an abusive relationship. The most telling sign is fear of your partner. If you feel like you have to walk on eggshells around your partner—constantly watching what you say and do in order to avoid a blow-up—chances are your relationship is unhealthy and abusive." This is a very nuanced portrayal of an abusive relationship. Bogart/Dixon Steele almost has the classic profile of a chronic spouse abuser: loving one minute, insanely jealous the next. She is independent, he has masculine charm, they are both sophisticated and intelligent - they fall deeply in love. He wants Gloria Grahame to be an extension of his own desires and utterly without independence: he monitors her calls, he is furious when she does anything and does not let him know about it. He has finally resorted to assaulting her by the end of the movie. The difference between Bogart and the classic abuser is that he knows he is wrong and that he lets her go.
