Game of Thrones: The Queen's Justice (2017)
This Episode Reminds Us What it is We Love About This Show
What an amazing episode. I have been a fan of season seven so far, but this episode was the best of the season. It reminds us that it isn't the battles, sex, or violence that brings us back each week, it is the characters competing in the great game. While GOT does show us great battles (as we saw in Blackwater, Hardhome, and Battle of the Bastards), this episode is made by the writing and dialog between the characters.
The scene where Dany and Jon meet was something fans were looking forward to for a while, and it was very well done. Viewers know the two characters well, and want them to unite and become a team, but we are reminded that these characters know nothing about each other and are adamant about their own goals. It would be hard to believe if both these characters we know discarded what they believe to trust someone they had just met. I am very excited to see what the plans are for these two characters going forward.
Some might be disappointed that we had a large battle (at Highgarden) occur off screen, but I feel like D&D delivered something much better with the scene between Olenna and Jamie. That scene is one of my favorite scenes of the entire series. We saw a character win in her death, which we rarely see with characters we love in GOT. Diana Rigg did a great job as Olenna and I am sad to see her go.
I also wanted to point out one last underrated scene. The exchange between Jorah and Sam was top notch. It is so refreshing to see such chemistry between actors that have had little to no screen time together in the series. This season continues to deliver in regards to this, we saw it with Dany and Jon, Sam and Jorah, and Jamie and Olenna.
I cannot wait to see what happens going forward.
The Elephant Man (1980)
Dare I say, I believe this to be the best film of all-time.
Although I am reviewing this movie after numerous others on IMDb, I viewed this film for the first time, and had to give my input. This film is truly remarkable, to put it simply. I believe this is David Lynch's best film, and as I stated in the title, in my opinion it is the best film of all time.
The Elephant Man is a throwback film that shows us the life of a man that has been judged his whole life on his abnormal outward appearance. I could break down the plot and messages of this film, but that has been done numerous times in the reviews on IMDb. What I will say is this; The Elephant Man is timeless, and even if you don't like older movies or even any of David Lynch's other films, give it a chance. I had this movie on my "watch list" for a very long time, and for whatever reason decided to put off the viewing until recently. Whatever is holding you back from watching this beautiful film, forget it. I can almost certainly promise you will not be sorry.
In summary, this film should be considered as one of the best of all-time, and left me speechless when it ended. I give this film a 10/10 and move it to the number one spot on my own personal 'best films' list.
Game of Thrones: The Winds of Winter (2016)
This Episode Gave Us So Much
What an episode, I'd put it only behind The Battle of the Bastards, and label it as the best season finale in GOT. Which makes sense because this is the same director that brought us Hardhome and The Battle of the Bastards. First off, the music in this episode was like no other GOT episode, and was amazing at setting the mood. We saw many main characters killed throughout the opening 15 minutes, and later saw sweet revenge on an infamous character. We also saw a major fan theory confirmed. We also see the two sides forming between Dany and those on Kings landing. What an episode, from the cinematography to the acting. I will be waiting on pins and needles for the next season to begin. We continue to see why many regard this series as the best on television.
10/10
Found (2012)
This movie does a lot of things very well
Let me start by saying I respect the hell out of this movie. I had heard good things about this movie, and it seemed right up my alley, so my expectations were set mildly high. I thought the story, character development, writing, and lead kid were all great. There were a few scenes with actors that played small roles that were almost cringe worthy because they weren't very good actors. Luckily for the film, most of the scenes took place between the 12-year old boy and his brother. My overall feeling with this movie is that I enjoyed it, but I wish there was just a liiiiittle bit more in the budget for the smaller roles. If you can get around a few scenes with bad acting, it is worth a watch.
The Purge: Anarchy (2014)
For What This Movie Is, It's Great
For a horror-action movie, this movie delivers. I hated the first Purge because it had so much potential and fell flat. I decided to give this movie a chance because I still like the idea behind the plot, and I thought it could be entertaining. I was pleasantly surprised by this movie and got way more than I expected. The original Purge bothered me for three reasons. One, the characters were stupid. Two, they never did a good job of explaining why the neighbors hated the main characters so much. Three, during the entire movie I was wondering what was going on outside the house.
This Purge did a great job of correcting those mistakes, and provided great action throughout the film. I was also surprised with the sociopolitical aspects that were sprinkled in different scenes. I give The Purge Anarchy a 9/10 for being a great popcorn flick.
Fury (2014)
Great movie, harsh critics of this movie need to relax
I loved this movie for it's different portrayal of WWII from the view of the 2nd armored division. This was the first WWII movie I have seen were the majority of the action sequences take place from inside a tank. The action sequences were intense, and this movie is very dark and violent. The violence is pretty intense, but I feel that it is necessary to tell the story of how crappy (huge understatement) these young men had it in WWII. I very much enjoyed this film and will be purchasing it when it comes out on blu ray.
SIDE NOTE: I was very surprised to see the amount of 2-3 star ratings that this movie had in it's review section towards the top. I feel that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but if you are going to rip this movie, have a good reason. The only criticism I see from this movie is that it's cliché... I swear.. every other negative review on this site says that something's cliché... THAT'S Cliché!
Turn (2014)
Ready For More
I saw the commercial for this show during the season finale of 'The Walking Dead' and it had me hooked. The show had a lot to set up in the beginning and some might have said it started slow, but it couldn't have finished stronger. The last scene of the episode reminded me of the last scene of 'The Godfather' in the way that the main characters made a pledge for loyalty, but were really organizing a secretive attack. I'm amazed at how many future plot points were developed in one episode (the father, the wife, the ex-fiancée, the murder mystery, the internal American spy, etc). This show looks like it has so much to offer and I will tune in for the rest of the season.
Gravity (2013)
My 2/10 Rating Is Made To Bring Gravity Back Down To Earth (Actual=8/10)
I really did like Gravity and don't actually think it deserves a 2/10, but when I saw the 8.7 rating my expectations went through the roof. The trailer didn't really interest me and the hype was really the only thing that made me see the movie. It was pretty much exactly what I thought it was going to be. A survival movie that shows both the physical and metal aspects of being alone in space, as well as being disconnected from the world. It also has references to the origin of life, as well as a lot of religious undertones. I think part of the reason I didn't love this film as much as others is because I am not the biggest fan of survival movies. If you like survival movies and the preview had you hooked, you will love this film as much as the others on IMDb. If you wondered what all of the hype was about, you still might be wondering after the movie. I'd give it an 8/10.
Rush (2013)
I am a Movie Buff + Son of a Race Car Driver = High Expectations
When I was young and all of my friends were growing up watching movies like Peter Pan, Ninja Turtles, and Lion King. I was watching movies like Le Mans, Grand Prix, Gumball Rally, Vanishing Point, etc. My dad used to be a race car driver, and I love collecting & watching movies. When I heard people saying this was the best racing movie of all time, I thought "It looks good, but have you seen Le Mans or Grand Prix?" Well, after seeing "Rush" last night, it belongs alongside those two... maybe above. THIS. MOVIE. WAS. AMAZING! It was amazing not only for the racing sequences, but was so well acted and well directed. I left the movie theater wanting to buy the ticket for the next showing. RUSH TO THE THEATER TO SEE RUSH!
GasLand (2010)
A film that stands on scare tactics and fiction
You do realize that none of this film is based on fact, right? Since Fox made "Gasland" he declines to participate in interviews and answer questions about the most pertinent images and "facts" to his documentary. It really is kind of amazing how people just eat up what they are spoon fed through effective lies. If you want the truth watch, counter documentaries like "Truthland" or "FrackNation." A documentary like this has led to drilling bans for multiple counties and states, and I am dumbfounded that the American people can believe a story whose only crutch is complete fiction. The tag-line of the documentary is "Can you light your water on fire?" Fox himself admitted that flammable water is a natural phenomena, that has happened well before fracking. Just get the facts people...
The Man from Earth (2007)
Respect for "The Man from Earth"
The Man from Earth is a movie that takes place in one room. Any movie that can engage the viewer without a bunch of CGI, explosions, fast paced scenes, etc is very hard to do, and Man from Earth did that. I didn't really know what to expect from this movie, and didn't have any expectations. If you have not seen it, know that you are getting yourself into something very intellectual that is closer to a book than a movie. The reason I give this movie 6 out of 10 is because of the direction the movie took. I thought it to be very interesting, but at the same time very out there and slightly insulting. I do not have a problem with movies that question religion, but I do have a problem when movies make Christians out to be the uneducated, close-minded, and "faith-only" kind of people. Without diving into that issue, I feel that this was a very thought provoking movie that is worth watching.
Lawless (2012)
Lawless... What more could you want
This is the first review I have ever written, but I felt like I had to write one about this movie. I consider myself a big-time movie buff, and own well over 600 movies. With that being said, Lawless has to be one of the best movies I have seen.
Looking at the other reviews about this movie just make me wonder what people want out of movies. Some people called this movie "slow" or said it "missed the mark." Lawless is truly a movie that gives you everything you could want in a crime/gangster(ish) movie. Not only does Lawless have an all-star cast, everyone delivers. Guy Pearce gives one of his best performances of his career. Yes, his performance rivals that of Memento. I could go on and on about this movie, but I think I will keep it simple and give out grades for every category I can think of.
Sound Track - A+ Characters - A+ Story - A+ Acting - A+ Action - A+ Filming - A+
If you like movies like Road to Perdition, Miller's Crossing, The Untouchables, and L.A. Confidential I'd be surprised if you did not like Lawless.
