Superman & Lois (2021)
Don't mind the rating
I give everything I watch and get some enjoyment out of a 10 because I don't want to bother grading it
I enjoyed the first season. It seemed to get away from the worse tendencies of the CW. I thought Tyler made a creditable Superman and actually enjoyed the fact that while his strength and courage are unquestioned, he sorta takes a back seat to Lois at home. She kind of wears the pants and it doesn't bother me. At least they are portraying him better than they ever did in Supergirl. I also like that they are dealing with the question of if the worlds greatest hero can find the time to also be a good husband and father
I liked a strong Lois Lane and did not even mind the soap opera aspects of the children
This season has slipped a little and I'm worrying those tendencies of the CW are rearing their head. I do, however, like that they are taking chances with the show. Superman is questioning whether he has always made a mistake in keeping his identity a secret from the people who are close to him. With the latest episode he made a choice regarding that and it certainly will change the direction of the show
What hurts the show most is that the network is shooting itself in the foot. It has a very poorly timed release schedule and just when the show ever gets momentum, it goes on lengthy hiatuses. That's no way to keep a fanbase.
I'm hanging in there, but the show can be a mess at times, while being pretty innovative at others. It's not easy to make an 80 year old character interesting.
The Gilded Age (2022)
I Gave It A Full Season
Fair or not, I can't help but compare this to Downton Abbey. In almost all respects it is inferior.
I don't find myself caring about any of these characters and some of the casting is bothersome. Who did not like Bates after episode 1 of Downton? But there is no Bates, Violet, Anna, Thomas, Sybil or Mr. Carsen to be found here. The acting is inconsistent, but the very best are just as good as on Downton, however they lack the charisma of those actors.
The plot is mildly intriguing, but I defy anyone to come up with any moment in the entire first season that can match Episode 3 of Downton when the Turkish diplomat dies in Mary's bed and the upstairs and downstairs conspire together to conceal what has happened. There is nothing in the entire season of Gilded to match that one scene in Downton
The sets....look like sets. The CGI is too obvious.
Also, while I admire Fellowes the storyteller, I think his writing can be a bit silly. He seemed able to constrain himself for the most part in Downton, but the worse of his writing attributes flourish here
It's not horrible, but with so many other choices I won't be watching S2.
Big Sky (2020)
Bad Scheduling
It's definitely got it's issues. Sometimes I find myself asking..."why am I watching this?" However, the fact that I do indeed keep on watching must mean something. However, this, like many other shows, just seems intent to shoot itself in the foot. Show two episodes, then off for 3 weeks, show another 2 and then off for 3 weeks again. That's no way to keep an audiences interested.
Humans (2015)
A Well Done Science Fiction Show
This was a fun well done science fiction show. It would be interesting to watch it back to back with Westworld as they cover some of the same territory. The show would not have worked if not for the brilliant performance of Gemma Chan who instantly allows the viewer to sumpathize with the plight of the synths. The show remained pretty consistent throughout it's run. It did end with some unasnwered questions but was generally satisfying
I do have to laugh at the comment by another reviewer who mentioned that the casting of William Hurt was in some way to just attract the American audience. Hurt is very well known and a respected actor, but I guarantee you that NO ONE in the States has ever seen Hurt's name on a project and thought - "Omg, I HAVE to see that!" lol.
Kevin Can F**k Himself (2021)
Some of you just don't get it
It's perfectly fine for you to not like the show. What is hilarious is that judging from the comments most of you don't have a clue as to what you are watching.
The laugh track is ridiculous? The sitcom parts and those characters are annoying and not funny?
That's the point!! It's goofing on sitcom tropes that we've seen 97 times and also making a commentary on how women/wives are often treated on these types of shows
Like I said, perfectly fine for you to feel the show is not well done, but at least have some comprehension of what you're watching.
For me, the big problem of the show is that in it's sendup of the sitcom tropes that many of us hate, the viewer is forced to sit through these same tropes while watching the show and they are terribly not funny. Also, significant time is given to Kevin's "antics". I like the concept, but I feel like I'm getting half of a really good show and I inwardly grown whenever the sitcom portions occur. I don't see a solution to this problem.
Mare of Easttown (2021)
You will get VERY strong Broadchurch Season 1 Vibes
While the subject matter is depressing, thankfully there are a few moments of levity.
Kate Winslet is remarkable and NOT just because she got a bit dowdy for the part and not because she looks very unglamorous and not because she nails the dialect. She's remarkable because you're watching a master at her vocation. The rest of the cast is terrific too
It is impossible to watch this and not think of Season 1 of Broadchurch if you have seen it. That's not a bad thing and it's to the credit of this show that it manages to hold it's own in relation to the marvelous Broadchurch.
Evil (2019)
Loved the show, but won't follow it to Paramount+
I totally get it and understand that the show possibly wouldn't have gotten picked up at all if they didn't make the move to Paramount, but I just won't play the streaming service game anymore. It's not the money, but the principle. I understand it's just business. Good luck to the cast and crew. I really wish I could continue to watch.
The Incident (1967)
Stereotypical New Yorkers, but still somewhat riveting
It's hard to know what one would do in a situation like this. We would all LIKE to believe we would do something, but you really don't know until your faced with it. The fact that they tried to fill the subway car with just about every variety of person was a bit comical, but the cast was good and even if it wasn't always so well done, it kept my attention. I also think it is a subtle dig at New Yorkers as it is the Oklahoma soldier, who only has one good arm, who finally takes a stand against the punks. For the most part, the New Yorkers are apathetic. I kept wanting to scream at the TV for all the younger men to just rush the punks, but it didn't happen. It's every man for himself and as the New Yorkers leave the train they have not learned their lesson as they casually just step over the drunken "bum'
