The Neighborhood (2018)
Corny as can be, dad level puns & jokes, & intrusive product placement
Yet it's something different & the cast is good, but ... remember back when actors started by being cast in commercials ?
Now whole shows are the freakin' commercial, amazon this, Geico that, Alexa that, sitting back on the porch akwardly just to showcase the Nike Air Max...
Talk about selling out, i'd care less if the show didn't go for hard-hitting subjects, but hey, it's how it is. Gotta keep the shareholders fat & happy.
Arcane: League of Legends (2021)
Touching enthusiasm from the fanboïzzz...
Hype, trend, TENCENT Troll Farm churning out 9-10 reviews/ratings, idk, idc.
It's true the animation is something else, almost as if each frame is 3D pastel painted. But the art has its flaws too, some might find it too... cold, once you get used to it, the hyper-stylization is almost overbearing & smh removes to the atmosphere.
Kudos to "Fortiche" tho ("Hotshot" in Angliche, the animation studio) I knew France defended itself in this domain, they did not disappoint.
Now the flaws, no spoilers but avoid this if you haven't watched it yet : subjective, but I lost interest about halfway into the 3 episodes, the character development was weak, look @ Benzo's fate, were we supposed to feel something for that swiftly introduced character ?
Also Vi's reaction to her sister's involvement in the act's finale left me perplex to say the least.
And the dynamic between the street urchins focused too much on the dissensions rather than getting us attached to them as it could have.
Also there's nothing new in terms of storytelling (magic+science, enemy brothers, enemy sisters, Alita Battle Angel-style clash of the classes... ) the writing wasn't very engaging and i didn't dig the main villain transformation)
It's been a long time i haven't played LoL, but the fan-service seemed weak, all i got was the teleportation stone & that pink potion maybe...?
Doesn't matter but I was always more of a Dota -fan, the original blizzard mod, so...yeah.
The show could have benefitted from a longer runtime, 60mn episodes @ least, adding to the universe building, it lacked a light side & things felt rushed with more than a few dull moments.
Anyway, am still looking forward to the second act this week-end, the last video game anima adaptation that i semi-enjoyed was that Castlevania thing, on Netflix too, couldn't finish it as it was too much blah-blah, this is aIready much better. (+it made me try Valorant for the 1st time, pretty good :)
Invasion (2021)
Not a catastrophe show, but a catastrophe of a show.
After "Foundation" I was excited to give another Apple TV sci-fi show a go, went blind, thinking it being worse than the second season of "See" would be an aberration, a statistical impossibility...
Oh boy was I wrong, it's "This is Us" meets the worst parts of "Sense8", 80% of the show is made of those extra-close close-ups they use, to, I guess, get us involved with the characters &/or hide the lack of production value.
The cast is stereotypical , from fashion-model perfect kids, dedicated small town sheriff, heroïc magazine cover doctor lady, or genius hacker aerospatial engineer lesbian lady, to body-built G. I's depicting life in a warzone camp as a frat holiday, black dude swearing every other sentence uttered, neo-nazi meth redneck, cheating-on-his-prettier-than-him wife arab dude, brit piggy-nosed bully & his prescient Bieber hairdo little artistic prodigy counterpart, defended by yet another strong female teenager (we get it, all women are strong victim/heroines, no not the drug...)
I forget the shameless product placement (Tesla, Apple-doy, Puma, Beats headphones...) the stupid mention of "Earth" in every location caption, like we don't know on which freakin' planet "Tokyo, Earth" or "New Jersey, Earth" are, the perfectly placated hair in zero-G & j' en passe...
I won't mention the tedious pacing of the show, as this review is already longer than expected, or the fact that 5 episodes in, we saw maybe 3 minutes of, i must admit, great CGI of the actual invaders (giant-ass carnivorous seeds with antigravity/ferromagnetic dancing fluid properties...)
Main positive...? Well its redeeming to have the show display writers/creators credits so proudly & proeminently @ the beginning of each episode, it will make it easier to avoid their work for another 5 or 10 years, as they S0o need the time to grow professionally.
5/10 out of respect for the effort, jobs created & contributing to the ultimate demise of Apple TV+ & consorts, as we don't need more distribution channels, but better content.
Hell, even the NBC's formulaïc soap-scifi show "La Brea" blew this drivel out of the water (the first episodes I mean, couldn't endure it much longer either, same monster, different skin : bad sci-fi).
The Choe Show (2021)
"Anh's Brush with Fame" it is not
Interesting dive in the universe of an eccentric artist & some of his friends/accointances etc...
No real format, but thx to gr8 editing it flows seamlessly, & i must say , dude can art!
8/10 for having to bear all that hipster tortured artist vibe i'm allergic to.
Refreshing nonetheless.
Kevin Can F**k Himself (2021)
Refreshing, but...
Too dragged out, between the 20mn sitcom & hour drama, i'm watching it @ 1.3*speed to make it bearable.
Sure the alternance btw boxed laughter, grittiness & daydreaming is interesting but lacks in execution : the oversaturation is physically painful, heroine's misadventures lack originality & even only 2 episodes in, i feel i alrdy know where's evertg z going. (but dat's on me, ate too much art in this life ;).
Still there's plenty out there, from the recent "Physical" on Apple+, to last summer "On Becoming a God in Central Florida" (summer b4 dat ? Damn covid...) or even "Desperate Housewives" & the more recent "Why women Kill"...
The tale of the frustrated "lady of the house" (yea not many synonyms 4 dat 1) seems to keep inspiring new material.
Anyway, piqued mi interest & i hope i can add some starz to mi rating later.
"Jett" 2019 was nice too, but she wasn't really a housewife...
Regards.
Sexify (2021)
Not my cup of tea but....
All I can say is that ofc Aubrey Plaza gots clones running around the world, acting & whatnot, & yes it is a good ting !
Wander (2020)
Lagertha deserves better than this...
My brain refused to recognize her troughout the flick & it's only after the credits rolled that I went on here to, sadly, confirm my suspicion.
So sure it's not a disaster, & i would have enjoyed it like a neat B-movie, were it not for the opening dedication, that sets the tone for something far more serious, i'm a second gen migrant & tbh felt kinda insulted ;)
I get from her bio that the director is a native & even maybe a feminist, but immigration & displaced populations are subjects more deeply treated in The Daily Show than in this "descent into madness" wannabe thriller...
Oh & for those praising the twist, it's literally spelled out mid movie, so yep, good effort tho.
The Good Lord Bird (2020)
Gripping last episodes !
The start is a bit slow & dull, but I kept to it, thinking it's in-a-sort a good series sequel to "Free state of Jones" (2016), rare gem as some would call it, casting-wise, John Brown is a young Mr Spock.
RDR2, Tarantino vibe, def worth a watch.
Rebecca (2020)
so who killed who? cuz i know i died a likkle (& not in a good way)
Yea they shd sell a copy of the book with the movie, or i'll go to the library, i'm a fan of a good thriller, this wasn't 1
& y so my feeling about this adaptation ?
As Mr Hitchcock once said : "This paperback is very interesting, but I find it will never replace a hardcover book - it makes a very poor doorstop."
The Comedy Store (2020)
No b.s, lovely 'make your own mind' approach & star-studded !
I watched "I'm Dying Up Here" (back in) 2017 barely aware it was inspired by historical events, seeing this now felt ...like ventolin 4 an asthmatic !
Tig N' Seek (2020)
Just bad
Imagine there was a slot to fill in a bad idea called hbo max, that's a perfect fit, senseless, vapid, checked it out hoping for a Calvin & Hobbes reboot sorta', turns out it ain't worth putting in the recycle bin, waste of bandwidth.
If i were to rate recent tv worst animated series from worst to shouldn't have existed, it would go : that 1, Duncanville, Close enough.
Just ekh, i'd rather let my kids drink mercury than watch these failed attempts @ entertainment.
Alien News Desk (2019)
Fun stuff
Just worried they packed too much in the 1st one, also they shdn't have put SNL on the picture-thing, all the haters went & hated.
It got that MAD vibe, & 'de gustibus', but it's funny & clever, on the spectrum, with adhd, refreshing tv.
Damnation (2017)
Damnation, puny not.
So much soft porn, it oughta b blamed for making teens become gigolos pimps & whores. I know they say sex sells, but they're already selling sex. Also there's a preacher, a cowboy, a black woman, white women, & lots of soft porn, that seems to try articulating the story, but nay, comes off more as a show designated for pervs, no accusations, Spartacus or Game of Thrones got criticized for their showers of flesh, & i highly doubt this will even bother them critics. Personally, & this might be mean, but totally felt it was a waste of efforts, bandwidth & hertzs. 6/10 cuz i'm in a good mood & it's obvious it could have been something good, interesting, like say..."Justified", But so far it ain't, anyway, u have everyright not to take my word on it , every piece of art deserves chances & i ain't 1 to gamble :]
(cuz if everybody f***d everybody on the first episode, maybe they'll have something else to do on the next ones)
