Forrest Gump (1994)
Best movie of all time
This movie is quite simply the best movie of all time.
The negative reviews talk about how dumb the movie is and how it's message is that you just stroll through life and succeed by doing as your told are missing the true beauty of this movie.
The story is unreal, it's crazy. It's not normal for people to have all that success and experience. But that's the appeal, having a character who doesn't care about any of that, doesn't understand it. He's not cocky like most people would be who achieve what he achieves. What he really wants is that love, which always seems to cruelly evade him. But he carries on and never changes who he is.
What I always loved about the movie was the adventure. The highs and the lows. It has so many beautiful moments. I love how the people involved wouldn't let budget constraints ruin the movie and persisted to make this fil lm what it should be and refused to cut vital scenes.
The movie isn't realistic. It's an escape. For a short period of time, you can escape and enjoy Forrest's adventure.
Enjoy the ride.
Line of Duty: Episode #6.7 (2021)
Can't please everyone
A lot of people are unhappy it wasn't a nice happy ending where corruption is stamped out, Osbourne and Carmichael caught out and punished. I understand this. Last night I felt I bit unsure of the ending, after sleeps on it I feel differently. I admire the writer(s) for going against the grain and not having the fairytale ending. Instead it left certain questions that make for talking points. I give this an 8 as I wish the last episode had been longer as it felt a bit rushed. I feel that they left the unveiling of H to the last minute, and it needed more time.
Detectorists (2014)
Beuatiful series
There's something special about this series. I remember watching it when it first released with my housemate at the time. Expectations were low, but we both ended up falling in love with it. It may be slow paced, but they still manage to get through a lot of stuff in on 6 episodes per series. The music is perfectly fitting, the theme tune sets the mood and it's so relaxing. There are so many good characters in the show too. The humour may not be to everyone's taste, but for me it was just the right level.
During this year with lockdowns, doom and gloom. Me and my wife have revisited Detectorists and it's really helped. I just wish I could tag along with Andy and Lance one day.
Elizabeth Is Missing (2019)
Superb
The lead actor puts in one of the best performances I've ever seen. The crying shame is that people may not give this a chance. But it combines great drama with serious issues that affect many people and their families. The filmography is also on point. You can't help but love the lead character and you will be left happy yet sad.
Us (2019)
Decent acting, poor script
After watching this film, I can only conclude that the writer had an idea about the government creating clones to control us, then decided to try and make a story that was a bit different to others that had followed this premise. What you end up with is some elements of potential surrounded by a story that has been taped together with so many holes. The twist is largely expected. But the explanation of the major event of the film is very weak. It would have been better left unexplained. They include things like the holding hands across America, but it doesn't have any real significance apart from showing the scale of how many people have emerged form the underground. Can't really fault the acting or any of the production of the movie, most sense were filmed well, the music was good etc. Unfortunately the script let's it down.
Ready Player One (2018)
A film made by people who have no love or knowledge of the material
This film is garbage. I remember seeing the trailer and thought it looked quite cringey. A work colleague mentioned he'd read the book and it was quite good. So I gave the book a go and really enjoyed it. While it was a little cringey in places it was a good book. So I then quite looked forward to film. This film takes the overarching theme and throws all that's good out of the window. I was so disappointed to find so many great moments from the book totally abandoned. Such a wasted opportunity. What we end up with is a super generic, weak attempt. The film felt rushed and totally lacking of substance. Every now and then they throw something in that happens in the book totally out of context just so it has something from the book. The end was terrible. It throws in concepts that totally ruin the world and physics of real world/vr interaction. Seems like it's made by someone who has never played a computer game. How did Ernest Cline agree to this!?
Alien: Covenant (2017)
Must be one of the few
I gave this 10, mainly to boost the score because of how many 1's people are giving this.
I can only assume that some of these people didn't watch Prometheus.
I watched the trailer and was a little disappointed, I'd been waiting for this film for quite a few years. I was one of the few last time who actually enjoyed the plot of Prometheus. I thought it was flawed and the acting was terrible, but I did think the concept was good and was looking forward to how the story would continue. This is why i was disappointed in the trailer, as it seemed like they had gone for just another Alien film and abandoned the Prometheus line.
Fortunately I was wrong, instead they have gone the route of making David the main character of this trilogy (if a third is ever made). This in my opinion is a good move as it makes the Alien movies about more than just people being hunted by Aliens. This is about life, artificial intelligence and also survival.
While there aren't too many memorable characters from the crew, I thought the acting was better than Prometheus.
Yes, it was daft for them to even go to this planet. But the captain was under pressure to make a call. In his mind, they were merely checking it out. It's surely worth checking a 'human' signal from a planet far away, and people were a little uneasy about the cryopods after James Franco got sizzled.
This movie contains some classic scenes, most of which contain Fassbender who really is the star of the show. The flute scene was brilliant. The twist between him and Walter, although blindingly obvious leaves the film ready for the next chapter.
I am intrigued to know what David plans to do next.
Donnie Darko (2001)
The definition of a cult classic
This film divides people, you either love it or hate it. For me I love it. Why? I am not sure, it has that je ne sais quoi.
It begins with the intro, when the music begins it sets the atmosphere and when you have seen it before and revisiting it gives me butterflies.
I love the fact it was a modern film set in the 80's. It lets us reminisce of an older time. It touches on issues which still are here today in some areas.
It's purposely vague. When I first watched it not everything made sense to me. When I watched it a second time suddenly so much began to make sense. Now I have seen it countless times over the years and the film seems to complete in my mind, with so many visual metaphors.
The ending may be a little confusing in some respects but I cannot help but feel it's so poetic especially with the sound track.
Knowing (2009)
Enjoyable
After reading some peoples comments and ratings, it really does annoy me when people rate a film so low just because they don't understand it.
I enjoyed this film because it tackles a subject which I have enjoyed to read about and debate with friends. How humans began life on this planet. It mixes this great theory and storytelling with some really good action scenes. Personally the plane crash was quite touching when the plane went over the road (I think they could have improved the latter stages of the scene where Cage runs into the wreckage), It felt quite shocking. There was also some quite decent suspense scenes which reminded me of a classic horror film. Rather than rely on effects or too many jumps to scare people, it creates atmosphere which is what a lot of modern films miss.
I've seen some people who have commented who clearly didn't understand the whole premise of the film. That is no reason to give this film a 1 or a 2 rating. I would suggest reading chariots of the gods by Erich Von Daniken. You may appreciate this film a little more then.
